Be it known that I, LrNnoRr H. JAMns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vance` burg, Lewis county, Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.

Y rlhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of churns wherein a vertical dasher is made to rotate by means of lever or hand mechanism; and the same consists, substautially,in such features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim. i

The object of the invention is to provide a churn which shall possess the combined characteristics of simplicity, ease of manipulation, and cheapness in cost of manufacture as compared with many former inventions of a like character, all as will more fully hereinafter appear when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a view in perspective of a churn constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View thereof, taken on t-he line .aand showing the manner ofadjustment of the lower shelf by which accommodation is had to vessels varying in height.

Reference being had to the several parts by the letters marked thereon, A represents a suitable base or platform, supporting thereon a vertical standard, B, having formed therein an opening, C, and provided at .the top with a fixed or immovable projecting ledge or shelf, D. The said standard is provided near its opposite vertical edges with elongated slots a, and in these slots is adjustably supported a shelfor ledge, E, having project-ing from its rear edge screw-threaded bolts b, which enter the slots, and the said movable shelf is maintained at its different points of adjustment by means of thumbnuts screwed up tightly against the front side of the standard, as shown. The purpose of having this shelf adjustable is to enable cans or vessels of varying height to be placed thereunder for the proper reception of the churn-dasher, the said dasher F being supported in a vertical manner in openings d, formed in both the fixed and movable shelves, a nut or collar, e, being provided on its spindle to maintain the same in position and prevent it from falling out.

Loosely supported in the opening C of the standard, between its upper and lower side, are two spools or pulleys, G G, while to the rear end of the platform or base are hinged or pivoted two movable hand-levers, H H, each being provided with a screw-eye, i, into which are received the ends ofa band or belt, J, which passes around or over the pulleys as well, also, as the dasher, as shown in Fig. l.

Extending from the rear side of the standard at suit-able points, and fastened to the base or platform, are two stay-rods, K K, which serve to firmly brace the standard and prevent loosening of the same from the base.

As represented in both figures of the drawings, it will be seen that the head carrying the blades ofthe dasher is removable from its shaft or spindle and secured in place by means of a set-screw.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that all that is necessary to do is for the operator to grasp the two hand-levers, and by working them back and forth alternately the strap or band will cause the dasher to reciprocate back and forth within the churn.

Whenever it is desired to employ a vessel of very great height, the same can be readily accommodated by simply elevating the adjustable shelf.
