UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL A..oAMP, oir-BARRE; VERMONT..
HoLDBAoK.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 3,716,796,` dated January 24, 1888.`
Application filed April 7, i587.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. CAMP, a citithe county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Holdback, of which the following is-a specification. My invention relates to a holdback attached to the thills of a carriage or sleigh. y The object of my invention is to provide a holdback that is convenient and safe, and that will prevent the strap of the harness while while in use; but in case the tugs ofthe harwise, the pressure ofthe strap when pressing forward disconnects itself, allowing the horse The accompanyingdrawings are referred to and made a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, of my improved holdback. y
l'nthe drawings, A represents the thill.
B represents a case in which spring av is inclosed, and to which arms C and D are pivoted at b, having cam projection d resting on the spring a inclosed in the case B.
. E is a cap between the spring and the thill, holding the springin its proper place. Ehas an opening at each end, through which the screw that attaches the case to the thill passes at one end and the extended end of standard G through the other end.
G is a. standard against which the pressure Seria1No.234,o-/4. (No model() v of the harness-strap comes in backing the car- 3 5 of the inclosed space Which holds the strap ofAk i the harness. i Y ,Y
In using niy invention, after the horseis backed between the thills, press the holdback.-
strap of the harness against arm C, when arm 45 -C is thrown against -case B, and arm D, by the action of the cam and spring, is brought so the oritice inthe end of'armD engages with v the extended end of brace H, completely inclosing the holdback-strap. 5o To disengage the harness from the thills the horse in moving forward brings the harnessstrap against arm D, tipping the arm down, and by action of the spring-arm C throws the strap entirely free from the holdback.
Having thus described my invention, WhatI wish to secure byLetters Patent is v rIhe combination, with the case having the` closed front, and also havingthestandard-G, o, provided with the `brace H, of the pivoted 6o arms C D, having the cam projection d, the y spring a, and the cap E, said cap having an j opening through which the standard G passes,
