WA d 1 1.1 r mu \& QR mm Xv mm DISPENSER FOR PRESSURIZED CONTAINER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION At the present time, pressurized containers of medicinal preparations, hair spray, paint or other liquids are commercially available. The size and weight of such containers as well as the dispensing means associated therewith makes it inconvenient to apply said liquid in an exact, predetermined location.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to an improved, finger operated dispenser for use with pressurized containers of liquids. An adapter, detachably secured to any currently available pressurized container, includes means coacting with the valve mechanism in said container. An elongated tube connects to said adapter and to a normally closed valve in said dispenser. A rotatable disc on said dispenser includes a plurality of nozzles whereby the user may select a desired spray pattern for use with the object which is to be coated.

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, there is shown in FIGS. 1 and 5 of the drawings a conventional pressurizedcontainer 10 including annular shoulder 11 in the upper end thereof which definesdepression 12; upwardly extending bell portion 13 in the center of said depression accommodates dispensing valve 14 with stem 15 andvertical dispensing opening 16 extending above the plane of shoulder 11. In the pressurized container thus formed, stem 15 is normally biased upwardly as by a suitable spring; when said stem is depressed against the,
pressure of said spring, the material fromcontainer 10 flows through opening 16.
As best seen in FIG. 5 of the drawings,adapter 17 is detachably secured to shoulder 11 ofcontainer 10. More specifically, longitudinally extendingbody 18 terminates downwardly inring 19 which defines recess 20; said ring is adapted topass intermediate annular shoulder 11 and bell portion 13.Male threads 21 are provided abovering 19 exteriorly of the lower portion ofbody 18; said threads terminate upwardly in proximity tocollar 22 integrally formed with said body and slightly below the midpoint thereof.Nut 23, mating withthreads 21, terminates downwardly incollar 24 of reduced diameter provided exteriorly with laterally extendingarcuate member 25 adapted to pass downwardly and inwardly of shoulder 11 thereby engaging the same, and exteriorly in downwardly dependinglip 26 adapted to frictionally engage the outer surface ofring 19.
Upwardly ofcollar 22,cylindrical section 27 of said body is of reduced diameter with integrally formed, laterally extending, generally U-shaped lugs 28-29 (see FIG. 6) in proximity to the upper end thereof. Vertically extendinggussets 30 support the lower portion of said cylindrical section. Actuatinglever 31 includes outwardly extending trunnions 32-33 adapted to insert into lugs 28-29 and essentially perpendicularly extendingarm 34 the innermost end of which is provided with transversely extendingteeth 35. Downwardly oftrunnions 32,33 said lever includes an integrally formed, inwardly extending,arcuate spring 36 the lower end of which bears againstcylindrical section 27. Longitudinally extendingbore 37 inbody 18 communicates upwardly with opening 38 in the top of said body.
Still referring to FIG. 5 of the drawings,sleeve 38 inserts into the lower portion ofbore 37; said sleeve terminates downwardly in diverging conical section 40 the inner surface of which is adapted to bear against bell portion 13 with the lower edge of said conical section 40 normally lying in the plane of the lower edge ofring 19. As will hereinafter be described, ring 41 may be carriedonsleeve 39 whereby'said sleeve may be adjustably positioned withinbore 37 to accommodate bell portion 13 of any height. Elongatedvalve 42 terminates downwardly in integrally formed anddivergingconical section 43; longitudinally extendingtube 44 of metallic composition, adapted to insert intoopening 16, is fixedly secured invalve 42. with the lower end thereof extending substantially downwardly of the lower edge ofconical section 43.Spring 45, carried onvalve 42, bears against the upper end ofsleeve 39 and the lower end ofcollar 46 integrally formed in the approximate medial portion of said valve, respectively. Upwardly ofcollar 46, generallycylindrical section 47 of said valve is adapted to pass throughopening 38.
As best'seen in FIG. 6 of the drawings, a plurality of longitudinally spacedteeth 48 are provided insection 47 intermediate lugs 28-29, said teeth are adapted to be engaged byteeth 35 onlever 31. The upper end ofvalve 42 is threaded and preferably beveled, indicated by reference numerals 49-50, respectively. One end of anelongated tube 51 of plastic composition is press fitted overbevel 50 and fixedlysecured thereto by means ofnut 52 adjusted to bear against the outer surface thereof. The lower end oftube 44 is desirably provided with a diagonally and upwardly extending vent or recess 53; bore 54 oftube 44 communicates withbore 55 of corresponding diameter in said valve downwardly ofcollar 46 withcoaxial bore 56 of greater diameter communicating therewith and surfacing in the top of said valve.
Referring now to FIGS. 1-4 of the drawings, there is shown a finger actuated dispenser 57'detachably secured to the remote end ofelongated tube 51. More specifically,dispenser 57 includes a generally cylindricalforward section 58 which terminates rearwardly inmale threads 59; rearwardly convergingbase 60 includes a longitudinally extendingrecess 61 in the foremost end thereof andfemale threads 62 adapted to engagethreads 59. Valve 63 is adjustably mounted in longitudinally extendingbore 64 inforward section 58.
Forwardly,bore 64 includes convergingconical shoulder 65, communicatingbore 66 of reduced diameter, convergingshoulder 67, convergingconical seat 68 parallelingshoulder 67 and rearwardly thereof, andaxial bore 69 of still further reduced diameter. Valve 63 includes integrally formed, divergingconical section 70 the circumferential edge of which is adapted to expand againstbore 64 in a tight fit when liquid under pressure is introduced into the said bore in a manner hereinafter to be described. Forwardly thereof,valve 63 includes a reduced diametralcylindrical section 71, and a still further reduced diametralcylindrical section 72 which terminates fowardly in convergingconical face 73 adapted to bear againstseat 68.
Exteriorly,forward section 58 terminates rearwardly in transversely spaced, U-shaped lugs 74-75 (lug 74 not shown) withrecess 76 therebetween. Forwardly extendinglever arm 77 includes trunnions 78-79 (trunnion 79 not shown) adapted to insert into lugs 74,75; essentially perpendicularly extendingleg 80 oflever 77 inserts downwardly intorecess 81 provided invalve 63.Spring 82 carried inrecess 61 bears against the rear end ofvalve 63 maintaining the same in normally closed condition. Downwardly dependingconnector 83, integrally formed onforward section 58,includesmale threads 84 and desirably is beveled, indicated byreference numeral 85. The remote end oftube 51 is press fitted ontobevel 85 and retained thereon by means ofnut 86 adjusted to bear against the outer surface of said tube. Axial bore 87 inconnector 83 communicated withbore 64 forwardly of the foremost limit of travel ofvalve 63.
Disc 88 terminates forwardly in transversely extendingcollar 89; female threadedportion 90, provided in the rear surface of said disc, is adapted to mate with threads 91 in the foremost end ofsection 58. Bore 92 indisc 88 communicates withbore 69 heretofore mentioned.
Rotatable disc 93 includes a plurality of integrally formed and rearwardly extendinglugs 94 adapted to pass laterally ofcollar 89 with perpendicularly dependingflanges 95 on each lug passing rearwardly of said collar. As viewed in FIG. 3, a plurality of nozzles 96-99 to provide sufficient spray patterns are press fitted or otherwise secured indisc 93 in such a manner that each of said nozzles is adapted to align withbore 92 indisc 88.Projections 100 on the rear surface ofdisc 93 insert intodepressions 101 in the foremost surface ofdisc 88 for such alignment.
In the embodiment of FIG. 4, asingle nozzle 102 of generally truncated conical configuration terminates rearwardly infemale threads 103 adapted to engage threads 91 onsection 58 withaxial bore 104 in said nozzle communicating withbore 69.
In use,nut 23 is at least partially threaded ontothreads 21 andcollar 24 inserted intermediate shoulder 11 and bell portion 13;nut 23 is then rotated in such a direction thatarcuate member 25 passes under and engages shoulder 11 ofcontainer 10, and conical section 40 bears against bell portion 13 of said container. A downward force onsection 47 causestube 44 to insert into opening 16 in stem 15. The user may conveniently graspdispenser 57 with the fingers and apply a downward force onlever 77 whereby the material in container is dispensed through a selected nozzle.
Upon releasinglever 77,valve 63 returns to normally closed condition; upon depressinglever 31,spring 45forces valve 42 upwardly wherebytube 44 is withdrawn from stem 15.
It is understood, of course, that the foregoing disclosure relates to only preferred embodiments of the invention and that it is intended to cover all changes and modifications of the examples of the invention herein chosen for the purpose of the disclosure which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A dispenser adapted to coact with a pressurized container of liquid, said container including an annular shoulder, valve mechanism and valve stem, comprising an adapter terminating downwardly in a ring,
said adapter including adjustable means adapted to engage said shoulder,
said adjustable means passing intermediate said ring and said shoulder,
a sleeve carried in said adapter,
said sleeve terminating downwardly in a diverging conical section,
said sleeve carrying a valve,
said valve adapted to insert into said valve stem,
an elongated tube connected at one end to said adapter,
a dispenser,
a valve slidably mounted in said dispenser,
said elongated tube connected to said dispenser forwardly of said valve,
at least one nozzle in said dispenser, and
manually operable means to control the flow of liquid from said container.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said valve in said dispenser terminates forwardly in a diverging conical section adapted to expand under pressure.
3. A dispenser adapted to coact with a pressurized container of liquid, said container including an annular shoulder, a valve mechanism and valve stem, comprising an adapter terminating downwardly in a ring,
said adapter including adjustable means adapted to pass intermediate said ring and said annular shoulder,
a dispenser,
a valve slidably mounted in said dispenser,
said valve terminating forwardly in a diverging conical section adapted to expand under pressure, said adapter connected to said dispenser forwardly of said valve in said dispenser,
at least one nozzle in said dispenser, and
means in said dispenser coacting with said valve to control the flow of liquid from said container.
4. The invention of claim 1 further including means on said adapter to retain said valve in said adapter in said valve stem of said container.
5. The invention of claim 1 further including means coacting with said adapter to maintain said valve of said adapter in said valve stem of said container.
6. The invention ofclaim 3 wherein said adapter includes means to retain said valve of said adapter in said valve stem of said container.
7. A dispenser adapted to coact with a pressurized container of liquid, said container including an annular shoulder, a valve mechanism and valve stem, comprising manually operable means to control the flow of liquid from said container.
8. The invention of claim 7 wherein said valve in said dispenser terminates forwardly in a diverging conical section adapted to expand under pressure.
9. The invention of claim 7 further including means on said adapter to maintain said valve in said adapter in said valve of said container.
10. The invention of claim 7 wherein said valve in said adapter is normally biased upwardly, said adapter including means to secure said valve in said valve stem when said valve is depressed.
