Description

'J. SCOTT. CAR FOR CARRYING PETROLEUM, &0.
No 37,461. Patented Jan. 20, 1863.
17!. van Z02.
J26? 2L ass cs.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED CAR FOR-CARRYING PETROLEUM, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,461, dated January 20, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN SCOTT, of Lawrenceville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Car for Carrying Petroleum,&c., in Bulk; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, taken in the plane indicated by the line m :0, Fig.2. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, .the plane of section being indicated by theline 1/ 2/,
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to arrange a railroad-car in such a manner that the same is capable of carrying petroleum or other liquid in the bulk, thereby saving the necessity of carrying the load of the barrels with theliquid, and avoiding theloss occasioned by the leakage of the barrels during'the passage.
The invention consists in the employment, for the purpose of carrying petroleum or other liquid in the bulk,of a railroad-car lined with sheet metal in such a manner as to produce by said partitions communicate freely with 'each other, and that by said partitions a splashing of the liquid contents of the car is prevented.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a railroad-car, the body of which is constructed in the form and size of an ordinary baggage-car, or in any other suitable size and shape. It runs on wheels B, in the ordinary manner, and its body is provided with double walls a b, the outer wall being made of wood or other bad conductor of heat, and the lining being made of sheet metal, which is soldered together so that a perfectly oil-tight box, B, is produced. This box is covered by the top 0 of the car, which may be rigidly attached to the body, and provided with one or more inlet-openings, or which may be made wholly or partially movable, so that it can be taken away entirely or in sections whenever it is desired to obtain access to the interior of the car. The box B is divided by a series of longitudinal and transverse partitions, e f, into a number of compartments, g, and the partitions e f are perforated with holes h, close downto the bottom, so that a free communication is effected between the several compartments, and that petroleum or other liquid let into one compartment has free access to all parts of the box. If the box is now filled with petroleum or other liquid, the partitions e f divide the mass of liquid, thereby preventing the same from splashing or forcing off the top when the By the use of my car the freight of petroleum or other liquid will be considerably reduced, it being not necessary to carry the barrels with the'liquid, and consequently a large saving in weight and in space is effected;
and, furthermore, all the loss occasioned by the leakage of the barrels while the same are carried from one place to another is entirely obviated. manner that the several compartments formed Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The employment of a railroad car, A, lined with sheet metal, substantially as herein described, for the purpose of carrying on a railroad petroleum or other liquid in the bulk.
2. The arrangement of the partitions e f, perforated near the bottom with holes 71, in the interior of the car A, as and for the purposes specified.
JOHN SCOTT.
