lllllllllw lllll'l lllllhh" II I I libhlim DISPLAY PACKAGE OF A SCHIFFLl-EMBROIDERED EMBLEM PATCH The present invention relates to embroidered emblem patches and, more particularly, to Schifili-embroidered emblem patches, of the type generally worn on garments for purpose of identification or ornamentation, or both, such as the emblem patches conventionally worn on the uniforms of military, para-military and employee personnel or garments or uniforms of members of atletic teams or other groups or organizations. The present invention is directed to the provision, as a new article of commerce, of a new and novel display package containing such embroidered emblem patch and the means for securing it to a garment.

Schiffli-embroidered emblems of the type to which the present invention relates are generally mass-produced by simultaneous embroidery on a Schiffli-embroidering machine on continuous rolls of fabric. The embroidered fabric lengths are then die-cut to separate the individual embroidered fabric patches. These patches are then finished by forming thereon a Merrow-stitched thickened border that stiffens the patch and prevents unravelling of the fabric and also serves as a border ornamentation for the patch. Such embroidered emblem patches are generally secured to a garment by sewing it by its edges to the garment or by pressing them on the garment with an interposed layer of thermoplastic adhesive or glue.

Both of the above methods for attaching the patches to a garment present difficulties to individual users of the patches. Sewing is rendered difficult to the generally inexpert individual user because of the resistance of the thickened border to the passage of a needle. As to the adhesive method thermoplastic adhesive are not generally available or easily procured by the general, non-industrial, user.

It may here be explained that the pre-coating of Schiffli-embroidered emblem patches, with Merrow-stitched borders, such as of the present invention, as frequently done with other types of appliques, is impractical, for technical or economical reasons that will be well understood by those experienced in the Schiffli-embroidered emblem art.

The present invention contemplates the provision, as an article of commerce, of a package containing a Schiffli-embroidered emblem patchtogether with the means by which it may be easily and conventionally attached by the individual purchaser to a garment.

The present invention also contemplates the provision of a package of the character described whose contents are visible to the purchaser for ready selection.

The present invention further contemplates the provision of a package of the character described which is of attractive appearance and convenient for display at a point of sale.

The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the Schiffli-embroidered emblem patch packages of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings and from the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.

Referring more specifically to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the same shows an embroidered emblem patch generally designated as 10, comprising afabric section 12 embroidered withemblem portions 14 and 16.Fabric section 12 has a raised border or edge, 18, formed thereon by Merrow machine stitchin for reenforcing and for preventing unravelling of the fabric 1% as well as for ornamentation.

Emblem patch 10 is housed in an open ended, transparent bag, 20, together with attaching means to be used by a purchaser, consisting of a thin film or solid thermoplastic adhestive, 22, held on abacking sheet 24. Theadhesive 22 may be of any suitable type, a number of which are well known and readily available on the market and not thought necessary to be specifically identified. Thebacking sheet 24 may be of thin paper or any other material that may be substituted therefor as suitable for the purpose and from which theadhesive 22 may be readily peeled.

The package of the invention also includes a mounting card, 26, which may preferably comprise stiff, opaque paper, or the like, which is formed with a reentrantly foldable top flap, 28, that may be folded over the marginal edge portion of the opening ofbag 20 and secured in place as by staples, 30, to thebag 20 and mountingcard 26, to close the bag and hold it in place on the mounting card. A hole, 32, may be formed throughcard 26 and flaps 28 whereby the package may be suspended from a hook or the like, for display at point of sale.

The purchaser of the packaged emblem patch desiring to attach the patch to a garment may tearbag 20 from themounting card 26, remove the patch and adhesive laminate from the bag. The purchaser may then place the patch on the paper side of the laminate (FIG. 3), outline the patch on the paper with a pencil or the like, as indicated more or less diagrammatically by the broken line 34. The purchaser may then remove the patch and cut the laminate along line 34. Theadhesive film 22 may then be peeled off the paper backing 24 and placed on the garment between the garment and the patch, and the path secured in place by the application of a hot pressing iron to the patch or the garment which melts the adhesive; the latter thereafter setting and holding the patch in place on the garment, when the heat is removed.

It may here be stated that themounting card 26 may be utilized to imprint thereon instructions and diagrams describing and illustrating the method of attachment and that theflap 28 may be used for advertising display.

This completes the description of the new article of commerce of the present invention. It will be readily apparent that such article affords convenient and attractive marketing means for the manufacturer, at relatively low cost, and that it also affords great convenience to the purchaser in facilitating the attaching of the patch to a garment.

It will be further apparent that numerous modifications and variations may be made in the article of commerce of the present invention, by anyone skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth and without the exercise of any inventive ingenuity.

I claim:

1. As a new article of commerce, a package comprising a bag containing a Schiffli-embroidered emblem formed on a patch of fabric; said fabric patch having a raised Merrowstitched border, and a separable laminate of a film of a solid thermoplastic adhesive and a backing sheet; said laminate being of a size at least as large as said patch.

2. The package of claim I wherein said bag is secured to a mounting card.

3. The package ofclaim 2 wherein said mounting card is formed with a flap foldable over the open end of said bag and secured thereover against said card to thereby close said bag.

4. The package of claim 1 wherein said bag is transparent.

5. The package of claim 4, wherein said bag is secured on a mounting card formed with a flap foldable over the open end of said bag and secured thereover against said card to thereby close said bag.

Claims (5)

1. As a new article of commerce, a package comprising a bag containing a Schiffli-embroidered emblem formed on a patch of fabric; said fabric patch having a raised Merrow-stitched border, and a separable laminate of a film of a solid thermoplastic adhesive and a backing sheet; said laminate being of a size at least as large as said patch.

2. The package of claim 1 wherein said bag is secured to a mounting carD.

3. The package of claim 2 wherein said mounting card is formed with a flap foldable over the open end of said bag and secured thereover against said card to thereby close said bag.

4. The package of claim 1 wherein said bag is transparent.

5. The package of claim 4, wherein said bag is secured on a mounting card formed with a flap foldable over the open end of said bag and secured thereover against said card to thereby close said bag.
