Be it known that I, CLAES \VM. BOMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Pens and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is directed to that kindof holder for pens and like articles in which the sheath or case containing said article is provided with a self-closing cover or stopper for its mouth. Such a holder is not new with me, broadly considered.

My improvement is characterized by the combination, with the sheath, of a self-e1osing cover, which in opening or closing the sheath moves in a plane with the month of the sheath, or, in other words, in a plane at right angles to the axis of the sheath. Heretofore such covers, whether hinged to the sheath, have been arranged to move outwardly, being actn ated so to move by means of a longitudi; nally-movable pusherrod connected to a spring-retracted pressure-cap on the rear end of the sheath.

By my improvement there is no forward movement of the cover. It simply swings to one side in a plane parallel with the mouth of the sheath.

The nature of my improvement will be readil y understood by reference to the accompany ing drawings, in which---v Figure l is a longitudinal central section, partly in elevation, of a pen-holder embodying the invention in its preferred form. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder with the swung to one side of the month of the sheath. In this figure a part ofthe sheath is broken away to show more plainly the parts which cooperate to thus move the cover.

A is the sheath. B is a pen-holder, (typical of any article to be contained in said sheath,) which can freely slide back and forth within the sheath.

At the mouth of the sheath is the cover 0, which is fast to a rod, D, supported and adapted to turn or rotate in bearings a within said sheath. By turning this rod it will cause the cover to swing to one side of the mouth, as in Fig. 2, or to move the mouth so as to cover it, 1

according to the direction of rotation of said rod. The cover is self closing or springclosed. A convenient arrangement for this purpose is shown in the drawings. The rear end of the rod D has formed in it a spiral thread or groove, b, of suificient length to give the necessary range of movementto the cover. Onthis thread is mounted a nut, c, which is fast to the inner end of a stem, d. This stem is attached to the pressure-cap E, which is normally retracted or pushed back by the retracting-spring F, contained in a spring-case, G, and interposed between the bottom of said case and the head of the cap. The spring-case is inserted and made fast in the rear end of the sheath, and the stemd passes through an open ing in the bottom of the spring-case. In the normal position of these parts (shown in Fig. l) the cover closes the mouth of the sheath.

By pushing forward the pressure cap against the stress of the retracting-spring the nut c is caused to travel forward upon the rod D, and in so doing, by reason of its engagement with the spiral thread or groove 1), itcauses the rod D to rotate ina direction to swing the cover 0 to one side of the mouth, as seen inFig. 2. The moment hand-pressure is removed from the pressure-cap the retracting-spring throws the cap back, by which movement the nut is retracted to the position seen in Fig. 1, and the rod D is consequently rotated in a direction and to an extent suflicieut to again bring the cover over the month of the sheath. a

When the cover is swung to one side, as in Fig. 2, and the sheath is turned mouth downward, the pen-holder B will drop out or protrude fromthe mouth of the sheath to the per mitted extent, as shown in Fig. 1. In the pen-holder there is formed a notch, e, at the point opposite which the cover comes when the pen-holder is in protruded position. As soon as the pressure-cap is released the cover, by the action of the retracting-spring, will be turned and drawn into this notch, as seen in the figure last referred to.

The pen-holder has in its side a longitudinal groove or passage, f, to accommodate the rod D. Having now described my improvement and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, I remark that I do not confine IOC myself to the details of construction hereinbefore described, because the same may be Varied without departure from my invention; but

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. The combination, with the sheath, of a spring closing cover for the mouth of the same, hinged to turn upon an axis which is at right angles with the plane of the mouth of the cover, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

2. The combination, with the sheath and the freely-sliding pen-holder or other article contained Within the same, of thespring closing cover hinged to turn upon an axis which is at right angles with the mouth of the cover, and arranged and adapted to operate in connection with said sheath and pen-holder sub stantially in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

3. The combination of the sheath,the cover, the rotatable rod by which said cover is carried, provided with a spiral thread or groove,

as described, the pressure-cap, the retracting spring, and the nut engaging said thread and attached to and moving with said pressurecap, these parts being combined and arranged for joint operation substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

4. The combination of the sheath, the freelysliding' pen-holder or other article contained in said sheath, the cover for closing the sheath and for locking the protruded pen-holder in place, the rotatable rod D, carrying said cover and provided with a spiral groove or thread, the pressure-cap, the retracting-spring, and the nut engaging said thread and attached to and moving with the pressure cap, the combination being and'acting substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
