" Filed Sept. 22, 1969, Ser. No. 859,999
1m. 01. A61f 5/40 U.S. Cl. 128-159 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A male undergarment of the brief type having a fabric scrotum support pouch secured to and suspended from a waist band, the pouch having an opening through which the penis extends and a free falling flap partly of pouchlike formation at its lower end disposed in front of the scrotum support pouch and also secured to the waist band. A triangular shaped fabric seat panel is secured at its forward smaller end to the bottom of the scrotum support pouch and at its wide rear end to the back of the waist band. The waist band is formed of side elastic sections secured at their forward ends to the ends of a front central fabric waist band section which carries the scrotum support pouch and the forward free falling flap, the rear ends of the side elastic sections being secured to the corner end portions at the wide rear base of the triangular fabric seat panel which passes between the thighs of the wearer to lie against the buttocks of the wearer.
This invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly to an improved mans undergarment of the type known as a brief, that provides a degree of body support for the male genitals which permit free movement of the portions of the body adjacent thereto.
Essentially it is the primary object of this invention to provide such a brief that embodies a separate pouch serving as a suspensory and/or support for the scrotum and testes attached at its upper end to a waist band and at its lower end to the narrow front end of a substantially triangular fabric seat panel designed to fit between the thighs of the wearer and having its wide base secured to the waist band so as to lie against the buttocks of the wearer.
Another object of this invention is to provide the scrotum support pouch with an opening centrally thereof and adjacent the waist band through which the penis extends.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a free hanging flap having its lower end pouch shaped that is disposed in front of the scrotum support pouch and secured along its upper edge to the upper edge of the waist band.
A further object of this invention is to form the waist band of a central fabric section to which both the scrotum support pouch and the free hanging forward flap is secured, and two side sections of an elastic band having their forward ends secured to the ends of the central fabric section and their rear ends secured to the corner portions of the wide base of the triangular fabric seat panel.
Still another object of this invention is to make the brief of this invention in a variety of sizes adaptable to various size wearers, which is easy to put on and take-off which will provide a high degree of support for the scroturn, that will allow a maximum of free body movement, that is simple in construction requiring a minimum number of stitching operations in the fabrication thereof, and which is easy to launder.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accompishment of the above and related objects, my invention may be embodied in the form illus- 3,621,846 Patented Nov. 23, 1971 trated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only, and that change may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described within the scope of the appended claims.
A representative example of carrying out the invention, in actual practice, will be described in terms of the procedure for making a typical brief, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of the brief.
FIG. 2 is a cross section taken online 22, FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a detail fragmentary view of the front part of the brief viewed from the rear.
Referring to the drawing in greater detail, the brief 10 is seen to consist of a frontscrotum support pouch 12, a front fabricwaist band section 14, a free fallingflap 16 disposed in front of thescrotum support pouch 12, a triangular shapedfabric seat panel 18, adapted to pass between the thighs of the wearer, and two elasticwaist band sections 20, 22 each secured at its ends respectively to the fabricwaist band section 14 and to the back of the triangular shapedfabric seat panel 18.
Thescrotum support pouch 12 may be made of any suitable woven or knit fabric and is formed of twosimilar sections 24, 25 of somewhat elliptical shape, each section embodying anupper portion 26 theinner side edge 27 being concave at the lower part of the upper portion as at 28, such that when the twosections 24, 25 are stitched together from the lower point of theconcaved edge 28 along the entire extent of the remainder of the inner side edges of thesections 24, 25 as at 30, there will be formed thepouch 12 defining at its front anopening 32 the bottom of which is rounded as at 33. The seam 30 is formed with'the edge portions of thesections 24, 26 of thepouch 12 such that the inside surface of the pouch is smooth and will not present any raised surface that might tend to irritate the skin of the scrotum when lodged in the pouch. The exterior edge of theentire pouch 12 throughout its entire peripheral extent is reinforced by a hem orbinding strip 34 stitched in the manner well known.
The frontwaist band section 14 is formed of woven fabric folded over to form a flat tube open at each end with the longitudinal edges stitched or bound as at 36, 37. The length of the fabricwaist band section 14 is such as to exceed the combined width ofupper pouch sections 26 and opening 32, as seen in FIG. 3, the upper edge portions of theupper pouch sections 26 being positioned on the outer face of thewaist band section 14 and secured thereto by stitching. Each end portion of the fabricwaist band section 14 extends equally beyond the outer upper edges of the upperscrotum pouch sections 26, as seen in FIGS. 1 and 2.
Inserted respectively into each open extended end portion of the fabricwaist band section 14 is a forward end portion of the elasticwaist band sections 20, 22 and secured thereto by thecross-stitching 40. The rear end portions of the elasticwaist band sections 20, 22 are respectively secured to the opposite rear corners of thetriangular panel seat 18 by cross-stitching as at 42. Preferably thepanel seat 18 is formed of two layers of woven fabric and is triangular in shape with the two layers folded over to define the widerear end 43 of the panel seat. The rear end portions of the elasticwaist band sections 20, 22 are inserted between the fabric layers of the panel seat at the corners of therear end 43 of the panel seat and secured thereto bycross-stitching 42. The forwardnarrow ends 45, 46 of the two layertriangular panel seat 18 are formed to be in alignment and parallel to therear edge 43 and are centrally positioned on the rear edge portion of thescrotum support pouch 12 opposite theopening 32, the narrowfront end portions 45, 46 receiving therebetween the rear edge portion of the scrotum support pouch and secured thereto bystitching 48, as seen in FIG. 2.
Disposed in front of thescrotum support pouch 12 is the free fallingflap 16 that is formed of a double layer of woven fabric similar to theseat panel 18. Theflap 16 has a straight horizontalupper edge 50 that is wider than the front of thescrotum support pouch 12 as seen in FIGS. 1 and 3 and of a length so that its lower portion will lie considerably below the bottom of thescrotum support pouch 12. The lower portion offlap 16 is rounded as at 52 with its central portion formed with a triangular out (not shown) such that when the edges thereof are brought together and stitched as at 53 there will be formed aseam 54 providing apouch formation 55 at the lower end of theflap 16. The side edges of theflap 16 are suitably hemmed and stitched and theupper edge 50 of theflap 16 is secured by thestitching 36 to the upper edge portion of thefabric waist band 14.
The brief of the present invention as described and illustrated will provide greater comfort and support over the conventional forms of briefs now marketed. The instant form of brief minimizes binding, pinching and chafing while at the same time providing anatomically correct support for the scrotum and testes. The penis which extends throughopening 32 is free and is not subject to any constriction, binding, etc.; is fully covered and protected by theflap 16 and is comfortably contained and supported by theflap pouch 55. Access to the penis may be readily had by simply lifting and/or moving theflap 16 aside, the flap later being easily restored to its proper covering and support position, as is apparent.
The brief of the present invention may be made entirely of a light-mesh knit or woven fabric or parts thereof may be of knit fabric and other parts of 'woven fabric. The brief may also be made in a variety of sizes as to size of scrotum support pouch, flap size, seat size and waist band size.
