Saffitz ABSTRACT: A method of producing a design by applying translucent coloring material repellent by means of a writing instrument to an ink-absorptive surface of a sheet support, said repellent comprising polyalkyl siloxane in a volatile liquid medium which evaporates to leave the design, and thereafter applying a washable ink, water color or spirit soluble ink to color the sheet and to provide a contrasting color background against the design made by the writing instrument. The sheet may be coated with the repellent and coloring material before the written design is applied. The repellent may contain a coloring material which aids in creating different colors in contrast to each other.
METHOD OF DRAWING A DESIGN This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for drawing or otherwise producing designs and/or other illustrations on suitable surfaces such as paper, card or the like.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of producing designs, inscriptions or the like upon a surface, comprising the steps of applying a design or inscription to said surface by means of a coloring material repellent, or applying a design or inscription to a surface coated .with a coloring material repellent, which repellent may itself include coloring materials, and thereafter applying a coloring material to said design and at least a part of said surface so that said design appears on or in a background of said coloring material.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided apparatus for use in the production of a design, inscription or the like, comprising a writing, drawing or printing instrument containing a supply of a coloring material repellent. Preferably, the writing, drawing or printing instrument is a ball point pen or a fiber tip pen, said pen having a supply of coloring material repellent housed within its body.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided apparatus for use in the production of a design, inscription or the like, comprising a card or sheet which is partially or wholly coated, printed or patterned with a coloring material repellent.
The writing, drawing or printing instrument of the invention, in the form of a ball point pen, fiber tip pen or the like, will preferably contain a clear or translucent coloring material repellent. It should however be understood that the repellent itself may include a coloring material.
Coloring means may be incorporated into apparatus according to the invention. For instance one end of a writing, drawing or printing instrument may contain a coloring material repellent andthe other end may contain the coloring material. Alternatively, separate coloring means, say in the form of one or more paint brushes and one or more coloring materials may be provided.
In carrying out the method according to the invention, the translucent coloring material comprises a stable silicon/water emulsion, or an organic solvent solution of a silicone fluid known commercially as releasil, available from the manufacturer, Midland Silicones, Limited of Barry, Glamorgan, England, and supplied by the manufacturer as a solution of polydimethyl siloxane and methyl silicone resin in white spirit. Solvents for the latter include chlorinated hydrocarbons, aliphatic and aromatic ethers, solvent naphthas and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. tulune and xylene etc. Aliphatic and aromatic ketones, esters and alcohols can also be used as the solvent determining the final viscosity of the aforementioned coloring material repellent. Preferably, the amount of solvent used with the repellent will be between 5 and 95 percent by weight.
The repellent may include solutions of and/or emulsions of any polyalkyl siloxane. Particularly preferred, however, are the solutions in mineral spirits known as Releasil."
The repellent used in the present invention may act to repel any form of coloring fluid such as Indian ink, ordinary washable ink, some spirit based inks or any form of water color. Also, colored wax crayons may be used, preferably as a solid or semisolid solution of wax in a spirit.
Also, the coloring material repellent may itself include coloring material so that it is possible to obtain a colored pattern in a background of a different color.
By means of the invention, it is possible to produce many varied and pleasing designs, such as secret writing or other designs which are brought to light or become apparent on the application of coloring material. Examples of the formation of some designs are given below.
Example 1 A solution of repellentfluid in white spirit is dispensed from a ball point pen or a felt tipped pen for drawing a design or pattern on a surface such as a sheet of paper. Immediately the design or pattern is finished and dry, the surface is treated with a solution of Parker Quink" washable ink. The design or pattern is immediately brought to light or made apparent by this treatment since those areas of the surface bearing the silicone fluid repel the Quink. 1 7 Example 2 I e The produce as described in Example 1 is carried out with the exception that a color from a Reeves tempo disc is applied by brush, water being utilized as the color-carrying medium. The design or pattern is brought to light or made 'apparent on the application of the tempo disc color.
Example 3 A pattern ordesign is produced on a surface utilizing an emulsion of repellent fluid having the appearance and viscosity of milk. A coloring material as in Example 1 or Example 2 is then applied to the surface to bring out the pattern or design. Example 4 A solution of repellent fluid as specified in Example I is used for drawing a design or pattern on a surface. The reverse end of a ball point pen is fitted with a felt tip or roller or brush which has fed to it by means of a sponge reservoir a continuous supply of solubilized water color. Upon application of the coloring medium by the felt tip or the like, the pattern or design becomes apparent.
Example 5 A solution is made comprising 25 parts of Releasil I4 and; 75 parts of dimethyl silicone (viscosity 1.0 centistoke). This solution is then used in the manner described in Examples 1 and 4.
Each of the above Examples produces a two-tone design or pattern, i.e. a noncolored pattern or design in a colored background. It should however be understood that the coloring material repellent may itself be colored so that a colored design of a single color or a multiplicity of colors appears in a background of a different color.
The results achieved with the method and apparatus according to the invention have been found to be particularly pleasing with some of the well-known pattern drawing devices such as that sold under the name SPlROGRAPl-l (R.T.M.),
because a reversal of the normal patterns is possible, and because the variety of color and pattern obtainable is greatly increased.
The invention may be applied to books in a number of ways. Firstly, the book may have its pages wholly or partially coated with the coloring material repellent, the book being utilized for the production of patterns or designs by a user breaking through the coating of coloring material repellent by means of a pen, pencil or scriber to provide the desired pattern or design. Said pattern whilst not readily visible at this stage, appears in the coating. The pattern or design is brought to light on the application of coloring material as described above. Secondly the books may be preprinted. In this case, the pages of the book are coated with the repellent, the pattern or design or the like in this instance being applied to the coating by utilizing a typewriter or printing machine to break through said coating.
The books may, of course, be in any desired form. For example, the books may be reading books, the text beingprinted in a coloring material repellent, so that the text becomes readable after a coloring material has been applied. Alternatively, the text may be printed on the pages of the book by utilizing pages coated with the repellent, the printing machine being used to break through the coating. Thus the text becomes apparent on the application of the coloring material.
Alternatively, the books may be produced in the form of a picture book or combined reading/picture book. The invention may also be applied to preprinted cards for display and other uses.
What we claim is:
l. A method of producing designs, inscriptions or the like upon an ink-absorptive surface, comprising the steps of applying a design or inscription on said surface by means of a liquid dispensing instrument which delivers a translucent coloring material repellent to said ink-absorptive surface, said coloring material repellent consisting essentially of polyalkyl siloxane in a volatile liquid medium such as water or organic solvent, and waiting for the liquid medium to dry, and thereafter applying washable colored ink, watercolor or spirit based ink as a coloring material to said design and to at least a part of said surface adjacent said design so that said design appears in a light line pattern on a background of said coloring material.

A method according to claim 1, wherein said design applied by said liquid dispensing instrument is written on an inkabsorptive sheet which has been coated over its entire surface with said color-ing material repellent containing a coloring material, whereby the subsequent application of said coloring material provides a contrast between the coloring material in the coating before writing and the coloring material. applied after writing.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1, whereinsaid coloring material repellent applied in said first step includes a coloring material.
