lhe object of my invention is to produce a simple and effective machine for scouring or no polishing both surfaces of sheet-metal plates,
and especially tinned sheet-iron obtained from waste material such as tin cans or boxes-as more particularly described in a separate application for Letters Patent bearing even date 2 herewith and Serial No. 203,326.
The essential feature of my invention consists of two rotary scouringdisks, the faces of which are opposite to each other, in combination with hollow shafts for the passage of sand 0 or other scouring material to said faces of the disks and fccda-ollers for the passage of the sheet-metal plates to and from the disks.
It also consists of a novel construction of the scouring-disks, as hereinafter set forth, and of a novel means for conveying the sand or other substance to the surfaces of the disks, as hereina fter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the bed of the machine, supporting standards B B, which form the bearings for two independent shafts, O O, the axes of which substantially coincide with each other. On the inner ends of the shafts O C are mounted the scouring-disks D D, with their inner or 4 5 exposed faces opposite and contiguous to each other, so that a sheet-metal plate passing between the disks is exposed to the action of both disks, one on each side or surface thereof. Each of the diskshafts C G is provided with a pulley, L, wherebyitmay be connected with Patent No. 359,919, dated March 22, 1857.

asuitable driving medium for imparting thereto and to the disks a rotary moti0n,whieh may be in one and the same or in opposite directions, due to the independent condition of the shafts,and in order to permit of compensating for a wear of the disks either or both shafts may be provided with a grooved wheel, X, to engage with a shifting-lever, Y, having a setscrew, Z, for securing it in the desired position. Said dislcshafts G G are hollow, and through each shaft extends a tube, E, the inner end or terminal of which is open and adjacent to the face of the respective disks, so that if these tubes are supplied with a scouring n1aterial-such as sand or emery-at the outer end, this material is conveyed to the faces of the disks by means of the tubes.
In order to insurea uniform distribution of the sand or other material over the faces of the disks, the latter are provided with radialslots or grooves F and with a central recess,G, coniniunicating with said grooves as well. as with theinnerendoftheconveyor-tubes Esothatthe scouring material discharging from the tubes is received in said recess, and thence thrown outward into and through the grooves by centrifugal force. The radial groovesFare preferably made to terminate within the outer edges of the disks D, as shown in Fig. 2, to prevent the escape of the securing material at that point, and thus obviate waste. The conveyer-tnbesE are inclined to the axes of the hollow shafts in an inward direction, as shown in Fig. 1, to facilitate the passage of the scouring material through them, and the inner ends of the tubes being thus rendered eccentric to the disks, the said centrifugal force by which the sand is thrown into the grooves F of the disks is increased. Each of the conveyertubesE is provided at the outer end with a cap, H, through which passes freely a nozzle, I, which is connected to a hopper, J, by means of a flexible tube, K, so that the conveyer-tuhes may be continuously supplied with the desired scouring material from the hopper through said nozzle.
The letters Q Q designate feed-rollers, which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the axes of the sconring disks D D, said rollers, like the disks, being in vertical positions and the points of contact thereof being substantiall y in the line of the space between the faces of the disks, so that if the proper motion is imparted to said rollers the sheet-metal plates may be passed both to and from the disks by that means, the plates resting on bridges in of the bed. 7
Each pair of feed-rollers Q Q is geared together by means of pinions R R, Figs. 2 and 4, and on the shaft of one of each pair of said rollers is mounted a pulley, S, which is con nected with a pulley, T, Fig. 1, on one of the disk-shafts G G, by means ofa band, U, passing also over intermediate guide-pulleys,V V, so that a proper revolving motion isimparted to one of each pair of feed-rollers from said disk-shaft, whence such motion is transmitted to the other feed-roller by means of said pinlons.
Each of the scouring-disks is composed of a spirally-wound strip of leather or other simir lar material, whichis inclosed in a casing, N, and which, together with said casing, is secured to a head, 0, of the proper disk-shaft by means of screw-bolts I the heads of which are fiat and are fitted into the radial grooves F of the disks, the same abutting against the bottoms of said grooves when the bolts are By this construction one of the,
tightened. edges of the strip is brought upon the faces of the respective disks to form the scouringsurface, and, due to the spiral arrangement of the band as well as the nature of the material thereof, a very effective action is thereby produced. The coils of said spirally-wound strip composing the disks may be connected to-, gether, as by means of glue, to which maybe added sand or the like to produce a permanent rough surface, and also oil to preserve a soft condition of the leather.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In a machine for scouring sheet metal,

In a machine for scouring sheet metal, the bed A, having bridges m, in combination with the independent shafts, means, substantially as f described, for adjusting one of said shafts so as to compensatefor wear of the disk,and having disks D secured thereto, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3.
