TRACE AND REIN CARRIER FOR HARNESS. No. 350,166. Patented Oct. 5, 1886.
UNITED STATES TRACE AND REIN CARRIER FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed January 15, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1', JOHN A. SPEARS, a citr zen ot' the United States, residing near Thomasville, in Thomas county, Georgia, have in vent-ed new and useful Improvements in Trace and Rein Carriers i'or Plow-Harness, 01' which the following is a specification.
Hy improvement relates to the back-band trace and rein carrier for plow-harness; and it consists in the arrangement of the roller for the rope reins, whereby it is utilized to prevent the back-band slipping off the buckle teeth. The bearing-pin for the roller passes through the back-band, and is made removable to permit the adjustment of the buckle upon the band, the object being to hold the band upon the buckle-teeth when set, and to prevent the rope lines from being cut by wear.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective myimproved back-band trace and rein carrier; and Fig. 2, a section of the same.
The carrier-frame is cast in one piece with the buckle part for the back-band a, the tracehook carrier, and the loop for the roller-pin. The buckle part is formed of three bars, I) c d, the middle bar, a, whereof has spurs 6, over which the band is drawn and fastened between the outside bars in the usual manner. A loop, f. is cast on the outer side of the buckle part, within which a grooved roller, 9, is secured by a pin, it, having its head countersunk in the inner side of the middle bar, 0, and its end bent over the outer end of the loop, so as to confine the roller between said loop and the back-baud. The reins i are carried upon this roller, there being such a carrier for eachv trace, so that there is no cutting wear of the rope, as it is held upon the roller at the upper end of the loop within the groove of the roller and tree of the buckle parts. The hookj of the trace-carrier cast upon. the outer side of an extension, k, from the lower buckle-bar, and I form the hook with an inward curved end, Z, which has such relation to the lower bar of the loop as to hold the trace in place when hooked thereon by its links, so that it Patent No. 350,166, dated October 5, 1886.

hook the buckle-extension has an opening, m, lortho belly-band; but such band is not always used. I make the hook nearly square, and the loop for the roller is also square, so that the hook stands out with its end sufficiently near the lower bar of the roller-loop to allow the chain to be easily hooked, and to hold the chain in the hook. The placing of the rollercontining loop over the middle frame-bar having the buckleteeth gives the advantage of arranging the roller against the back-band so to hold it secure upon the teeth when the buckle is once set, and allows the buckle-slots to be made wider tor the more easy placing of the buckle upon the band over the toothed bar, so that the band is held between the inner end ol' the roller and the toothed bucklebar.
To adjust the back-build the roller-confining pin It is removed, and for this purpose it may be held in place by bending over its outer end. as shown in Fig. 2, or in any way that will allow ol' its ready removal in adjusting or placing the band.
fl claim 1. The combination, with the backhand and the buckle part having the toothed bar 0 and the loop ot the roller g, arranged in relation to the said toothed bar 0 to confine the back-band upon the teeth thereof and to carry the reins, as shown and described.
2. The plow harness carrier herein de scribed, consisting of the buckle part having the middle toothed bar, 0, the loop f, the re movable pin It, passed through the said toothed bar and the back-baud, and the grooved roller g, confined by said pin against the back-band at the point of its crossing the toothed bar, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
