Description

April 22, 1969 K. 'BONF ILS COLOSTOMY OR ILEOSTOMY BAG Filed Nov. 5. 1 965 United States Patent 3,439,677 COLOSTOMY 0R ILEOSTOMY BAG Kjeld Bonfils, Platanvej 16, Copenhagen 5, Denmark Filed Nov. 5, 1965, Ser. No. 506,514 Claims priority, application Denmark, Nov. 14, 1964,
Int. Cl. A611? 5/44 US Cl. 128-283 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Colostomy or ileostomy bag of thin plastic sheet provided with filtered net means for enabling discharge of wind outwardly and away from the patients body.
The invention relates to a colostomy or ileostomy bag consisting of plastic sheet and one side of which is provided with an opening to be disposed opposite the stoma. Such bags have previously been made with an opening at the top to permit wind to escape, but this results in unpleasant odours, and it has therefore been attempted to make such bags entirely closed. When applying closed bags it has been necessary to administer various medicaments to patients for preventing flatus in the intestines, because the wind, if it cannot escape through the bag, will cause the patient great inconvenience. These medicaments, however, will only partially relieve the trouble, and it is the aim of the present invention to provide a colostomy or ileostomy bag by which the offensive odour is obviate and the inconveniences of flatus are overcome. This has been accomplished according to the invention by forming the bag with an opening in the side facing away from the wearers body and covering this opening with a filter through which wind can escape, but which is adapted to keep back or neutralize odour.
The flatus which might appear in the intestines will arise so gradually that an equalization of the pressure may easily be effected through a filter as defined, and by applying a bag according to the invention the patient will experience no inconvenience resulting from flatus, even where no medicaments are administered to reduce flatus. Moreover, the filter may easily be made effective as deodorizer, which can be achieved for instance by means of active carbon or by special deodorants applied to a suitable filter material, and thorough tests have shown that the inconvenience caused to patients using such colostomy or ileostomy bags is reduced to an absolute minimum. To such patients, therefore, the appearance of these bags represents a very important advance, and the said effect has been achieved by very simple means, so that the cost of the bag will not be increased appreciably.
The invention will be explained here with reference to the drawing, which shows:
A colostomy or ileostomy bag according to the invention.
The drawing shows a colostomy or ileostomy bag 1 comprising two layers of thin plastic sheet heat-sealed together along the edges by a sealing line 2. At the upper end of the two side edges there is a further sealing line 3 defining two reinforcement regions 4, within which there 3,439,677 Patented Apr. 22, 1969 ICC are punchedholes 5 surrounded by a weld seam 6, and by means of these reinforced holes the colostomy or ileostomy bag may be attached to a belt. In the rear side of the bag is an opening 7 adapted to receive the stoma, and the rear side may in a specific manner be provided with an alilhesive for sealingly attaching the bag to the patients s in.
On the front side of the bag is an opening 8. Inside this opening a filter material 9 has been attached by adhesion. The filter material may be hydrophobic cotton or other applicable fibre material which is suitable for receiving a deodorant which may be applied from the outer side through the opening 8.
I claim:
1. Colostomy or ileostomy bag fabricated substantially of thin plastic sheet and comprising a front side and a rear side, the rear side being provided with an aperture spaced apart from the upper edge of the bag and adapted to be disposed opposite the stoma, the front side being provided with an opening positioned adjacent the upper edge of the bag and above the level of said aperture to allow wind to escape from the bag in a direction away from the patients skin while precluding any possibility of solid or liquid materials flowing from the stoma through the opening and flat pad-like filter means covering said opening to preclude the escape of odors through said opening while enabling the bag to be disposed on a patients body without producing any noticeable bulge or projection and to function efficiently without irritation to the patients skin or the release of objectionable odors.
2. Colostomy or ileostomy bag defined in claim 1 wherein said filter means comprises a pad adhesively secured generally across said opening.
3. Colostomy or ileostomy bag defined in claim 2 wherein said pad comprises a fibrous material having the characteristics of hydrophobic cotton.
4. Colostomy or ileostomy bag defined in claim 2 wherein said pad comprises an active carbon material.
5. Colostomy or ileostomy bag defined in claim 2 wherein said pad comprises a deodorant.
6. Colostomy or ileostomy bag wherein said rear side comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive disposed generally completely around said aperture for operatively, sealingly associating the bag to a wearers body.
