MEASURING AND DISPENSING CLOSURE Filed Aug. 29, 1967 INVENTOR. Y MARJORIE A.K.BLUMEN United States Patent 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cap structure for containers adapted to dispense measured amounts of the contents from the container. This device employs a fixed cup member which is inserted into the neck of the container. A rotatable cup member is fitted into the fixed cup. Both of the cups are provided with openings in their bottoms and the rotatable cup is provided with a projection which functions as a stop and which extends into the opening in the fixed cup bottom. The device is also provided with a cover or cap which is threaded to the neck of the container and which is provided with a projection frictionally engaging the inside of the rotatable cup so that when the cover is screwed onto the neck of the container, the clutch enters the rotatable cup and rotates this cup to bring the opening in the bottom thereof into alignment with the opening of the bottom of the fixed cup, whereby the rotatable cup may be filled with liquid or granular material from the container through the aligned openings when the container is inverted. In order to capture the contents in the rotatable cup, the cover is turned through less than one revolution so that the opening in the rotatable cup is brought out of alignment with the opening in the fixed cup. Thereafter, the container may be turned right side up and the contents of the rotatable cup exposed upon removal of the cover from the container.
Description of the invention This invention relates to measuring and dispensing closures for containers of liquid or granular material.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved container closure for measuring and dispensing the contents thereof which is economical to manufacture and which is eflicient in operation.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved measuring and dispensing closure for product containers which is provided with a rotatable cup member that is adapted to be filled with a portion of the contents of the container when the container is inverted and which portion of contents is adapted to be dispensed therefrom when the container cover is removed.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved measuring and dispensing closure for a product container which comprises a fixed cup positioned in the neck of the container and a rotatable cup positioned in the fixed cup, said cups having openings in the bottoms thereof which are adapted to be aligned so that the rotatable cup may be filled with a portion of the contents of the container, said openings being adapted to be closed after said rotatable cup is filled so that the contents of the rotatable cup may be dispensed therefrom when the cover of the device is removed.
Other and further objects of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates from the following specification, claims and drawing, in which, briefly:
FIG. 1 is a vertical sectional View showing an embodiment of this container closure device;
FIG. 2 is an exploded view showing the parts of this device;
ice
FIG. 3 is a top view of this device with the cover thereof partially broken away to show the rotatable inner cup of the device with the opening in the bottom thereof aligned with the opening in the bottom of a fixed cup positioned in the container neck; and
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 showing the opening in the bottom of the rotatable cup out of alignment with the opening in the bottom of the fixed cup.
Referring to the drawing in detail,reference numeral 10 designates a container for liquid or granular material. This container may be in the shape of a bottle provided with a neck having threads 10a molded into the exterior surface thereof. A cup 11 which may be of plastic or like material fits snugly into the neck of the container and is held therein by friction. The cup 11 is provided with aflange 12 at the upper end thereof which overlaps the top of the bottle so that the cup 11 cannot be pressed further into the bottle than the neck thereof. The cup 11 is provided with an opening 12a in the bottom. This opening may be made slightly larger than a semicircle, as shown, or it'may be made substantially smaller. Also, more than one opening of different shapes may be employed, if desired.
Arotatable cup 13 is positioned in the fixed cup 11 and fits closely therein. Therotatable cup 13 is provided with an opening 13a in the bottom thereof which is adapted to be aligned with the opening 12a of the fixed cup 11. The bottom ofcup 13 is provided with aprojection 15 which is adapted to extend into the opening 12a of the cup 11 and engage the sides thereof so it functions as a stop.Projection 15 therefore limits the rotation ofcup 13 with respect to cup 11.Cup 13 is also made of plastic or other semi-flexible material and is provided with aflange 14 which is adapted to be pressed into thegroove 12b of the cup 11 so that therotatable cup 13 may not be readily removed from the fixed cup 11.
Thecap 16 of this device is provided with an internal thread 1611 which is adapted to engage the thread 10a of thecontainer 10 when thecap 16 is applied to the container to close the mouth thereof.Cap 16 is provided with acircular clutch 17 on the inside thereof which is adapted to extend into the top of therotatable cup 13 and frictionally engage this cup when the cap is threaded to the top of the container. Thus, when thecap 16 is rotated clockwise and screwed onto the container, as indicated by the arrows shown in FIG. 3, theclutch 17 enters therotatable cup 13 after the cap is positioned well on the container.Clutch 17 then gripscup 13 and rotates it clockwise an amount determined by theprojection 15 so that the opening 13a in the bottom ofcup 13 is positioned over the opening 12a of cup 11. Whencap 16 is to be removed from the container, it is rotated counterclockwise, as shown by the arrows in FIG. 4. During the initial part of thecap removal clutch 17 also grips the inner surface ofrotatable cup 13 and this cup is rotated in the counterclockwise direction so that the opening 13a in the bottom thereof is brought out of alignment with the opening 12a of the fixed cup 11 and held there since thestop 15 engages one of the sides of the opening 12a. When thecap 16 is positioned all the way on the container theopenings 13a and 12a ofrotatable cup 13 and fixed cup 11, respectively, are brought into alignment and the cavity inrotatable cup 13 may be filled with a portion of the contents of thecontainer 10 simply by inverting the container and allowing the contents to flow intocup 13. At the same time, clutch 17 seals the mouth of thecup 13 and prevents any of these contents from flowing past this cup and between theflange 12 and thecover 16. Thecover 16 is then rotated counterclockwise in the direction indicated by the arrows in FIG. 4 while thecontainer 10 is inverted so thatrotatable cup 13 is rotated and the opening 13a thereof closed by the bottom of cup 11, whereby a portion of the contents of the container is captured inrotatable cup 13 and held therein when the container is turned right side up. Thecap 16 may then be removed all the way and the contents ofcup 13 emptied by tilting the container. The skirt of thecap 16 may be made long enough so that the cap is big enough to receive the contents ofcup 13 in case thecap 16 is completely unscrewed from the container while the container is inverted so that the contents ofcup 13 will not be spiled accidentally.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown so that the scope thereof should be limited only by the proper scope of the claims appended hereto.
