Description

Dec. 20, 1966 M. H. KOLODNY INTEGRAL CIGARETTE-CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Oct. 22, 1964 FIG-2 INVENTOR. MAXWELL H. KOLODNY BY MORGAN, FINNEGAN, DURHAM 8 PINE ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,292,635 INTEGRAL CIGARETTE-CIGARETTE HOLDER Maxwell H. Kolodny, 1220 Park Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017 Filed Oct. 22, 1964, Ser. No. 405,671 6 Claims. (Cl. 13110.5)
The present invention relates generally to cigarettes and cigarette holders, and relates more particularly to completely expendable, integral cigarette-cigarette holders wherein the cigarette is telescopically mounted within the cigarette holder and having new and useful improvements for both cooling and filtering the cigarette smoke before it reaches the mouth and throat.
It has previously been recognized that it is desirable to cool the tobacco smoke from a cigarette as much as possible before it enters the mouth and throat. Prior proposals, however, have not performed a satisfactory cooling effect, or have had disadvantages structural features. Thus, conventional King-size filter-tipped cigarettes are incapable of performing any substantial cooling effect. Although it has previously been proposed to provide conventional cigarettes with means for causing the smoke to travel a circuitous path, these means have not spaced the cigarette from the mouth of the smoker and it is apparent that the cooling effect achieved is limited since the entire cigarette would soon become heated. While separate cigarette holders achieve a cooling effect by spacing the cigarette from the mouth, these have never been accepted by the general consumer public. Although it has previously been proposed to provide a unitary cigarette and holder therefor, these have either merely spaced the cigarette from the mouthpiece end of the holder, or have provided structures requiring detailed attention by the smoker to operate and which detract from the normal appearance of the cigarette product.
The integral cigarette-cigarette holder of the present invention eliminates all of the fore-going disadvantages by providing a cooling space which not only has a greatly improved cooling effect on the smoke, but also (1) increases the filtration effect in itself by permitting the precipitation of tars; (2) permits the utilization of two or three filters which may be of a conventional and/ or new design; (3) improves and enhances the flavor of the tobacco; and (4) permits the introduction of flavoring elements without their actual burning. Further, the cooling space of my cigarette-cigarette holder does not require a change in size, shape or packaging of conventional cigarettes.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a novel, completely expendable, integral cigarette-cigarette holder.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder which achieves a greatly improved cooling effect on the smoke.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder capable of exposing a large cooling surface area in a compact space for greatly improving the cooling effect on the tobacco smoke.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder having a greatly improved cooling effect on the smoke and which requires little or no attention on the part of the smoker to operate.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder which achieves a greatly improved cooling effect on the smoke while maintaining a pleasing appearance of the cigarette product.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder which achieves a greatly improved cooling effect on the smoke without requiring 3,292,635 Patented Dec. 20, 1966 "ice a change in the size, shape or packaging of conventional cigarettes.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder wherein the tobacco smoke is both cooled and filtered before reaching the mouth and throat.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder which achieves a greatly improved cooling effect and an increased filtering effect on the smoke before reaching the mouth and throat.
A further object of this invention is to provide :a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder capable of exposing a large surface area in a compact space for both cooling the tobacco smoke and at the same time filtering out impurities.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel, integral cigarette-cigarette holder which improves and enhances the flavor of the totbacco.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel integral cigarette-cigarette holder having improved tobacco flavor which permits the introduction of flavoring elements without their actual burning.
Objects and advantages of the invention are set forth in part herein and in part will be obvious therefrom, or may be learned by practice wit-h the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
Briefly described, the present invention comprises an integral cigarette-cigarette holder wherein the cigarette is telescopically mounted within the holder and which includes novel longitudinally extensible cooling baffle means between the inner end of the cigarette and the mouthpiece or mouth zone of the holder. The baffle means comprises a series of adjacent disc-shaped members having diametrically opposed portions of their peripheral edges alternately interconnected. In storage, the discs may be collapsed into a small, compact space; in use, they extend, accordion-like, the length of the space formed between the inner end of the cigarette and the mouth zone of the holder, exposing a large surface :area to the smoke, requiring the smoke to travel a circuitous path in an open space, thereby providing a high cooling effect on the smoke before it reaches the mouth and throat. In a preferable alternate embodiment, the 'bafile discs are coated or impregnated with a suitable absorbent or adsorbent material to simultaneously filter undesirable tars and other impurities out of the smoke. In still another alternate embodiment, the cooling and filtering batfle discs can be made of compressible cellulose or synthetic foams, either plain or impregnated with suitable absorbents or adsorbents.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of an integral cigarettecigarette holder constructed in accordance with the invention, the cigarette being telescoped within the cigarette holder and the cigarette holder being partly broken away illustrated the bafiie means of the invention in the collapsedposition; 7
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cigarette holder of FIGURE 1 with the cigarette and baffle means in the extended position of use, being shown in side elevation.
Referring now more particularly to the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated an integral cigarette-cigarette holder, designated generally by thereference numeral 10, in which aconventional cigarette 12 is slidably mounted withinholder 14 for telescoping movement therewith.Cigarette 12 may be filter-tipped and a suitable self-containedfilter plug 16 may be, inserted in themouth zone 17 of the holder, thus giving double or triple filtering and cooling when combined with the baffle means, more fully described hereinbelow.
When packaged, cigarette 12 is substantially fully telescoped within thecigarette holder 14, as shown in FIG- URE 1, the combined length of the unit being on the order of a conventional filter-tipped cigarette permitting the cigarette-cigarette holder to be packaged as a conventional cigarette. In use, the cigarette is extended forwardly of the holder so as to leavespace 25 between the inner end of the cigarette and theholder filter 16, as illustrated in FIGURE 2.
To prevent complete withdrawal of the cigarette from the holder when extending the cigarette to a position for smoking, suitable commercially available adhesive films .13 and are provided near the outer peripheral inner end of thecigarette 12 and near the inner peripheral outer end of theholder 14, respectively, as shown.Adhesive films 13 and 15 are pressure sensitive to themselves only to form an adhesive bond upon contact, thereby ensuring correct withdrawal positioning of the cigarette.
The cigarette may be extended forwardly of the cigarette holder either by grasping the outer end thereof or by pulling pull-tab 11 outwardly. Pull-tab 11 may conveniently be formed of a thin elongated cellophane strip and is fastened to the outer cylindrical surface of the cigarette just above theadhesive film 13 by a light adhesive so that upon contact of thefilms 13 and 15, the tab falls 011.
In accordance with the invention, longitudinally extensible bafile means is provided for greatly improving the cooling effect on the tobacco smoke before it reaches the mouth and throat.
As embodied, this bafile means comprises a series of adjacent interconnectedbafile discs 20, or other suitably shaped members, diametrically opposedportions 22 of the peripheral edges of the discs being alternately joined. Theloose ends 23 of the outer baflle discs are attached, respectively, to the inner end of thecigarette 12 and to thefilter 16 positioned at the mouth zone .17 ofholder 14.
To use an integral cigarette-cigarette holder embodying the subject invention, cigarette 12 is simply pulled forwardly inholder 14 until theadhesive films 13 and 15 contact each other, thereby longitudinallyextending baflle discs throughout the length ofspace 25 formed between the inner end of the extended cigarette and theholder filter 16. It will be seen that the extended, interconnected bafile discs expose a large surface area in the space between the burning cigarette tobacco and the mouth zone of the holder, causing the smoke to travel a long, circuitous path after leaving the cigarette and before reaching the mouth and throat. This increased travel in an open space after leaving the cigarette results in a greatly improved cooling effect on the smoke. At the same time, the unique baffle construction permits a pleasing cigarette product.
In a preferred alternate embodiment, the hafile discs are coated or impregnated with a suitable absorbent or adsorbent material to simultaneously additionally filter undesirable tars and other impurities from the smoke.
' As a further modification, the baflle discs may also be coated or impregnated with a suitable tobacco flavoring material, such as menthol. This removes the menthol from the burning or hot area of the cigarette and prevents the methol from being burned, resulting in a better tasting cigarette.
While the invention is in no way limited to the use of particular materials in the construction thereof, examples may be given as a guide for the manufacture of a suitable product. Thus, thecigarette 12 may be in the usual form of a filter of properly out .and cured tobacco wrapped in the customary relatively thin paper andholder 14 may be conveniently be wound from suitable paper stock and in a sufficient number of layers to have the desired degree of rigidity. formed of a regular paper or, where both cooling and filtering is desired, of a suitable filter paper. Other material will be apparent to those skilled in the art from practice of the invention, e.g., the baffle may be formed from an elastic material which would he compressible, such as cellulose or synthetic foam.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific embodiment herein shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
