Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @EETCE.
HUNTER DAVIDSON, OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
HOOK FOB ATTACHING AND DETACHING BOATS FROM THEIR DAVITS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,036, dated April 9, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUNTER DAVIDSON, lieutenant U. S. Navy, have invented an Improved Mode of Attaching Ships Boats to their Tackling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
T ie nature of my invention consists 1st. In making the catch, C, fall back to its place, (after the ring, R, has passed its upper end,) by the preponderance of its lower end, that is, of that part below the pin, 19, upon which it, (the catch) turns. This permits the swallow of the hook to be made much smaller than that described in the patent dated November 15th, 1859, (known as Davidsons boat lowering, detaching, and attaching apparatus, upon which the method, herein described, of at taching ships boats "claims to be an improvement;) and also of such a form as to strengthen it (the swallow) and the stern of the boat, so that they cannot be injured by collision with other things.
2dly. The strap, S, is designed for a bolt to pass through it, and the breast-hook of the boat, (thereby preventing too great a strain from being brought on the lower bolts 7), b.) and keeping the attaching hook firmly in its place.
3dly. The outer lines, or shape of the hook differs from the patent dated Nov. 15, 1859, and permits the hook to be accommodated to the lines of the boats stern. This improved hook does not therefore have to protrude beyond the stern of the boat, running the constant risk of being broken off, bent in, or riding foul of other boats gunwales, &c., and injuring them.
The whole hook should be made of wrought-iron in order to be most serviceable.
)Vhat I claim as my invention, and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The catch,-C, the strap, S, and the particular form of the hook, which permits it to be fitted to the boats' stern, or stern post, so as to agree exactly with their usual outlines, the whole combined, and arranged as herein described.
S. CLARY.
