J.H.DE AM.
DRAG SAW. NO. 317,745. Patented May 12, 1885.
ngnphur. wnmn m, n. a
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN H. DEAM, OF BLUFFTON, INDIANA.
DRAG-SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,745, dated May 12, 1885. Application filed March 17, 1885. (No model.)
T 0 M2 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DEAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluffton, in the county of WVells and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sawing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in fire-wood dragsaws; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drag-saw embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
A represents the frame, which consists of the inclined beam at, the supporting-knees b c, and the standard d, which projects from the upper side of the beam a near the upper end thereof.
B represents a depending oscillating bar that is pivoted at its upper end to the upper side of the standard cl, as at e.
0 represents a guide strap or way that is secured to the beam at and prevents lateral play of the oscillating bar.
To the lower end of the bar B is pivoted a handle, D, to which is secured a crosscut-saw, E, of the ordinary construction, and near the upper end of the bar B is fulcrumed a lever, F, that is connected to the handle D by a rod, G.
To the knee 0 is pivoted a hand-lever, H, that is connected to the bar B by the rod I. By moving the lever H back and forth the saw is operated, and by means of the lever F the saw can be raised out of the out.
From one side of the beam a, near one end thereof, projects a stud, f, in which is cut a notch. When the saw is raised out of the cut in the log that is being sawed, its free end can be secured in the notch in the stud.
A drag-saw thus constructed is light, cheap, and simple, and can be operated by either or both hands by the operator in an erect position and without the excessive fatigue consequent upon the use of the ordinary crosscutsaws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the frame having the guideway O, the hand-lever H, and oscillating bar B, fulcrumed to the frame, the saw E, pivoted to the lower end of the oscillating bar, the connecting-rod I, connecting the bar B with the lever H, and the lever F, fulcrumed to the bar B and connected to the saw by the rod G, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the frame having the guideway C and the knee 1), notched on its upper side, the hand-lever H and oscillating bar B, fulcrumed to the frame, and connected by the rod I, the saw pivoted to thelower end of the oscillating bar, and the lever F, fulcrumed to the bar B, and the rod G, connecting said lever with the saw, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. DEAM.
