Z5 25 25 INVENTORS RNEY United States Patent 3,095,965 CASE FOR A RAZOR SET OR THE LIKE Gerald Stall], Rye, N. and Charles A. Johnson, Jr.,
Cos Cob, Conn., assignors to Philip Morris Incorporated, New York, N.Y., a corporation of Virginia Filed May 12, 1961, Ser. No. 109,706 1 Claim. (Cl. 206-46) This invention relates to article-containing cases, and more particularly to cases for containing, for example, a safety razor and a package of blades therefor.
Among the objects of the invention are the provision of cases for razor sets or the like which provide sturdiness of construction and a maximum of convenience for the user and which at the same time are economical of production and which can be easily assembled and operated.
With such objects in view, the invention contemplates the provision of a case which has an improved hinge construction, which is composed of elements which can be readily manufactured and assembled and which will perform their functions in an improved manner. In certain of its more specific aspects, the invention contemplates the provision of a base member and a cover member having cooperating hinge elements which are readily brought into association on assembly and which are held in operative position by portions of an after-assembled intermediate member carried in the base member, the provision of a structure wherein the various parts are formed and arranged in a particularly effective and attractive manner, the provision of a razor case which can be deposited in a plurality of desirable positions, and/or the provision of a razor case from which the water clinging to a safety razor may normally run off.
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the constructions hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view 'of one form of case embodying the invention, and shown horizontally disposed and in open position;
FIG. 2 is an exploded view thereof;
FIG. 3 is a front view on a smaller scale, and shown as hanging in vertical position;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged-scale transverse sectional view of the case horizontally disposed, but in closed position, the location of the section being indicated by the line 4-4 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is an exploded detail view of portions of the members to illustrate the hinge arrangement, taken from the upper rear and on a further enlarged scale;
FIG. 6 is a detail view of a portion of the base member to illustrate the hinge arrangement, on a similar scale, but taken from the upper front;
FIG. 7 is a detail rear view of the case on a similar scale and in closed position;
FIG. 8 is a section on the line 88 of FIG. 7;
FIG. 9 is a section on the line '9-9 of FIG. 7; and
FIG. 10 is a similar View of the case in open position.
The exemplified embodiment of the invention comprises a case composed of a hollowrectangular base 12 formed of plastic, acover 14 formed wholly or mainly of transparent plastic, and an intermediate or platform member carried by the base. As exemplified, the intermediate member is in the form of an article-supportingplatform 16 which, in the present instance, is formed of plastic and removably inserted in the base.
Thebase 12 comprises, in the present instance, a bot- 3,095,965 Patented July 2, 1963tom 19, afront wall 20, arear wall 21, andend walls 22 and 23, and is formed withprojections 24 and 25 extending downwardly from positions near those of thewalls 22 and 23, respectively, for supporting the box in a .generally horizontal position, which is the contemplated position for general use. However, in order to permit the box to be hung on a suitable fixture (such as a wall clip 26 of the upwardly-projecting flange of certain medicine cabinets) in a vertical position, when desired, there is provided aflange 28 below thebottom 19 near theend wall 23 and extending toward theend wall 22 to serve as a hook. In the present instance, theflange 28 extends from theprojection 25.
Thecover 14 comprises, in the present insatnce, atop wall 29, afront wall 30, arear wall 31, andend walls 32 and 33. Pursuant to the present invention, a separable hinge connection is provided for mounting the cover on the base. As exemplified, a pair ofarms 35 extend rearwardly from the lower portion of therear wall 31 of the cover and carry at their rear endslongitudinallyextending pintles 36 which may be of any suitable construction but which, in the present instance, are molded integrally with the cover. Therear wall 21 of the base is formed with an upwardly-extending flange portion formed with openings 39 thru which the pintles may be moved rearwardly into place. A rearwardly-extendingflange portion 40 extends above the ends of thepintles 36 but is formed with openings 41 for the reception of thearms 35 when the cover is swung to open position. Theflange portion 40 carries downwardflange portions 42 which extend behind the pintles '36 and, in the present instance, behind thearms 35. Thus theflanges 40 and 42, respectively, serve as stops to closely limit the upward and rearward movement of the pintles, and, since the cover either rests on therear wall 21 of the base or on theflange portion 40 or on thecurved surfaces 44 connecting the two, downward movement of the cover, and consequently of the pintles, is also closely limited. Since, however, theflange portions 38 do not extend in front of the pintles or other parts of the cover construction, the pintles are free to be moved forwardly (so far as the construction of the cover and the base are concerned), and, by the same token, are free to be moved rearwardly into place under theflanges 40 and in front of theflanges 42. In order to closely limit the forward movement of the pintles, theplatform 16 is provided with stops in the form ofupward projections 45 onarms 46 which extend rearwardly from the platform intonotches 48 in the rear wall of the base in the present instance. When the cover is in closed or partially closed position, theprojections 45 are disposed rearwardly of the rear walls of the cover; but when the cover is swung upwardly and rearwardly to fully open position, the rear walls thereof move above and rearwardly of theprojections 45 so as to permit the platform to be readily lifted for removal (and cleaning) or to be readily inserted downwardly for original assembly (or reassembly after cleaning).
Thefront wall 30 of the cover, which has a certain amount of resiliency, is formed with alatch member 50 having a forward lower recedingsurface 51, which can be pressed past alatch bar 52 in thefront wall 21 of the base, which also has a certain amount of resiliency, to snap into a latch opening 53 to releasably hold the cover in closed position.
Theplatform 16 is formed with (desirably decorative) openings such as shown at 56, 57, and 58, into which studs such as shown at 60', 61, and 62 on thebottom 19 of the base fit tightly but removably to assist in holding the platform firmly in place. The platform, in the present instance, is provided with a depression in the form of a T-shaped trough 65 which is adapted to receive a safety razor. Thehead 66 of the T is near theend wall 23 of the base, theleg 67 thereof slops toward thehead 66 to drain into the head when the case is in its horizontal position, and theplatform 16 is perforated at 70 and the bottom of the base at 71, so that water will drain from the case. Anopening 73 in the bottom of the base permits the insertion of a rod-like element to press the platform member upwardly .to facilitate its removal when disassembly of the case is desired. A rectangular portion of the platform is cut away at 75 to receive a razor blade dispenser.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the: scope thereof, it is intended :that'all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
The invention claimed is:
A case for a razor set or the like comprising a base member having a rear portion, a cover member having a rear portion adapted to be supported by the rear portion of the base member, a platform member seated in said base member, rearwardly-entending arms on the rear portion of said cover member, pintles carried by said arms,
means on the rear portion of the base member providing recesses into which said pintles may be moved in a rearward direction and providing shoulders opposing upward and rearward movement of said pintles, and arms extending rearwardly from said platform member at points disposed laterally of the aforesaid arms and carrying at their rear ends upward projections extending forwardly of said pintles to oppose forward movement of said pintles, the rear portion of said cover member being formed to oppose upward movement of said platform until the cover has been moved to an open position, said cover member being swingable on said pintles into an open position in which saidplatform may be moved out of said base member.
