PORTFOLIO WITH DETACHABLE MAILING CARD Filed Sept. 14, 1960 'lll/ll y INVENTOR BY *XM/mn ATTORNEYS 341252332 PRTFH W111i DETACHABLE fi/.lALlNG CARD Wilton .'i. Luhe/ack, 791 Seneca St., Buffalo, NX. Filed. Sept. 14, 196i?, Ser. No. 55,915 i claim. (ci. 22a- 72) The present invention relates to a portfolio with detachable mailing card and constitutes a continuation-inpart of my copending application for Portfolio Made of Paper, Serial No. 807,792 tiled April 21, 1959.
Generally the present invention consists of an identical structure with that shown in `my aforesaid copending' application with the addition of a removable mailing card detachably secured to the inner side of the completed portfolio.
It accordingly is the principal object of the present invention to provide an inexpensive detachable mailing card which may be formed as a part of a portfolio as above set forth.
Another object of the invention is to provide a detachable mailing card in a portfolio formed of a single, printed die cut sheet.
A further and important object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which may be manufactured and printed simultaneously and from the same blank which forms the portfolio above referred Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following speciication taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the reverse side of a diecut paper blank showing the score lines along which the blank is to be folded and also showing the areas to which glue is applied for sealing the portfolio as a part of the folding.
FG.- 2 is a plan view of a completed portfolio embodying the invention, viewed from the inside thereof.
FlGS. 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged fragmentary sections taken onthe correspondingly numbered lines of FlG. 2.
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a partly opened completed portfolio showing, in dotted lines, the manner in which the pockets can be used to contain papers or other materials.
To provide a low cost portfolio an important feature of the invention is that it is made from a single sheet 1d of paper which is diecut to form the blank illustrated in FlG. l and is also provided with score lines as hereinafter described to facilitate folding the blank into the form of a portfolio. The paper sheet 1li is preferably of high quality paper having high tear and burst strength with minimum hygroscopicity and there can be imprinted thereon any desired ornamentation or useful blanks or data (not shown). The blank sheet 1t) has fourscore lines 11, 12, 13, 14 defining a rectangularfront cover panel 15 and has four score lines .13, 16, 17 and '1S delining a rectangularrear cover panel 19, thescore line 13 being common to both panels and providing the hinge in opening and closing the portfolio.
Theline 17 also forms one margin of a relatively wide flap 2li which forms a vertical side pocket along the outer edge of therear cover panel 19. The longitudinalfree edge 21 of this flap forms the mouth of this pocket and itsshorter edges 22, 23 preferably converge toward theouter edge 21 to facilitate the folding and gluing operation.
The score line 14 and adjacent part of thescore line 18 form one margin of the relativelywide portion 25 of a tlap, which relative wide portion forms a bottom pocket for thefront panel 15 of the portfolio, the free longitudinal edge 2.6 of this llap forming the mouth of 3,082,932 Patented Mar. 26, 1963 "ice the pocket. One side of this pocket is provided by anedge 28 which preferably converges outwardly with reference to the hinge A13 of the portfolio. The remaining margin of theflap 25 is formed by ascore line 29 which forms a continuation of the hinge line =13 but is arranged at an angle to this hinge line. This angularity is in the order of 3 with reference to thehinge line 13 toward theedbe 28 of theflap 25. This particular angularity has been found essential in providing a bottom pocket closed on three sides and which lays flat when the portfolio is closed along itshinge line 13.
The relatively wide portion of the flap Z5 is continued beyond thescore line 29 to provide anextension 30` extending transversely of the flap and to provide a relativelynarrow extension 31 projecting along and forming a narrow flap at the bottom of theback cover panel 19. The extensions oraps 30 and 31 are .provided with the stripes orlayers 32, 33 of glue or other adhesive, this adhesive being on Ithe back of the blanks.
The blank includes a single relatively narrowtop flap 34 extending outwardly from thescore lines 12 and 16 and forming a com-mon upward continuation of the front andrear panels 15, 19 of the portfolio. Thisoutward extension 34 is provided, on the reverse face of the blank, with a stripe orlayer 35 of glue or other adhesive.
The paper blank is completed by a relativelynarrow side ap 38 projecting outwardly from thescore line 11 and forming a continuation of the front panel l15 of the portfolio. rhis extension is provided, on the reverse side of the blank, with a stripe orlayer 39 of glue or other adhesive.
An outer clearly transparent layer, lamina or sheet itl made of plastic is provided on the paper blank 10 which is smooth and glossy, has high tear strength and is highly resistive to moisture, scuing and abrasion and which extends around all marginsof the portfolio. For this purpose this clearly transparentplastic lamina 40 extends part way across the relativelynarrow ap 38 as illustrated at 41 in FIGS. 2 and 3 and this clearly transparent lamina also extends part way across the relatively wide side pocket flap 2.0 as 4illustrated at 42 in FIGS. 2 and 3. This clearly transparent plastic lamina also extends across the relativelynarrow top flap 34 as illustrated at l43 in FGS. 2 and 4 and this lamina also extends across the relativelynarrow portion 31 and part way across the relativelywide portion 25 of the bottom ilap as indicated at 44 -in FIGS. 2 and 4. The clearly transparent layer or lamina 4t) covers the -entire obverse faces of the front andrear cover panels 15 and 19 and strengthens thehinge connection 13 between these panels.
With the blank formed and'glued as shown in FIG. 1 and as above described the blank is folded as follows, this being done in a conventional folding machine as a continuous operation.
The relatively wide side pocket flap 2t) is first folded along the fold line 1'7 to bring it against the inside face of therear panel 19. The relatively widebottom pocket portion 25, together with the relatively narrow portions Si), 31 which jointly form the bottom ap is then folded along thefold lines 14, 18 and itsglue 32 and 33 broughtA into adhesive relation with the inside face of theback panel 19 and also the face of the llap Ztl. Thetop flap 34 is then folded along thefold line 12, 16 so as to bring its glue facing 35 into adhesive relation with the inside faces of the front andrear panels 15, 19 as well as with the relatively wideside pocket flap 20. Thellap 38 is then folded along itsfold line 11 so as to bring its glue facing 39 adhesively into contact with the inside face of thefront panel 15 as well as with theflaps 25 and 34.
3 When this is done, by virtue of the fact that thefold line 29, while a continuation of thehinge line 13, but being at a slight angle thereto, the pocket formed by theflap 25 does not bulge or distort when the portfolio is folded along itshinge 13. t
It will be noted that in the completed portfolio theplastic lamina 40 extends around all four edges of the portfolio as indicated at'41, 42, 43 and 44 so as to form a reinforcement at these edges. It will also be noted that theflap 20 forms a deep side pocket for the back panel 19k which pocket is of substantially thesame length as thepanel 19 and will hold articles with little danger of loss since it has been found normal to open the portfolio in the manner of a book, that is, with therear panel 19 being left on the surface of the table and the front panel lifted. uforms a bottom pocket on thefront panel 15 of the portfolio which securely holds any papers placed therein against loss under any normal carrying condition of the book. At the same time the portfolio is of very low cost, while at the `same time having outstanding wearing qualities and usefulness.
All of the above descriptive matter pertains to that por-k tion of my invention which isincluded in the aforesaid copending application. Y
The present invention comprises arectangular mailing card 50 one of whose longer edges is formed integrally with the lower edge of the relatively narrow bottom flap portion orextension 31, as viewed in FIG. l. Thecard 50 is detachable from theextension 31 by aperforated line 51. One of the shorter sides of the card Sti abuts the free adjacent edge of the extension 3G as indicated at 52. In the course of printing of the portfolio as above set forth, it will be apparent that thecard 50 may likewise be printed simultaneously therewith and may contain, for example, upon one side thereof a printedaddress 53 while upon its other side there may be printed matter includingblank lines 54, for example, for the placing thereon ofa return address.
It will be readily apparent that the portfolio in its assembled condition as above described'will present upon the inner side of its back cover, as clearly indicated in FIG. 6, thecard 50 whichextends in the same plane as theextension 30 and theextension 31 but which is readily severable therefrom by folding the same alongttheperforated line 51 one or two times and then tearing the same from theextension 31.
It will be apparent that printed matter such as advertising or the like may be placed upon theflap 25 and conveniently utilized in connection with thecard 50.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that minor modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
