W. A. JOHNSON.
CORD HOLDER FOR ASSISTING IN TYING PLANTS. No. 306,691. Patented Oct. 14. 1884.
WITNESSES @516 QMMOL.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. JOHNSON, OF WEST EXETER, NEW YORK.
CORD-HOLDER FOR ASSISTING IN TYING PLANTS.
.ZBPECIPECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,691, dated October 14-, 1884.
Application filed June i4, 1884. (No modelf) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. J oHNsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at NVest EXeter, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord-Holders for Assisting in Tying Plants; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others 'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention is a cord -holder for assisting in tying plants, &c., at heights inaccessible for ordinary hand operations; and the said invention consists in the improved device hereinafter fully described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents in perspective my improvement.
A represents a rod or handle, to the top of which is centrally secured a cross-rod, B, near each end of which extends upward in an inclined position a rod, 0.
At each end of the rod B is secured a spring,
a, one end of which is embedded in said rod,
. the same as the springs on'the rod B.
In using the device, the rope 'or cord is formed into a noose, which is slipped beneath the fingers of the several springs so as to be retained by the same, as indicated in the figure, in a distended position, a portion of the said loop spanning the rods 0, near their outer ends. In this position the device can be elevated so as to place the distended loop over the object to be tied, when the cord or cable may be pulled to cause the contraction of the loop, which contracting movement results in the loop portions forcing their Way under the fingers of the several springs and out-of engagement with said springs.
I claim- 1. The combination, in a device for holding cord, of a suitable handle, a cross-bar secured to the same and carrying rigid parallel rods or arms, and spring devices located on said crossbar and parallel arms, and adapted to hold the loop in a distended position, and to release the same when moved in a horizontal direction caused by the contraction of said loop, sub- I stantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the rod A, crossbar B, and parallel inclined rods or arms G, of
