Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. ATWOOD, on BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,740, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed October 8, 1883.. (No model.)
To aJZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. AT'WOOD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of buttons provided with shanks, when said shanks, which may be solid or hollow, do not consist I" wire loops, sometimes termed shanks.
The object of this invention is to so perforate said shanks as to accommodate a wire fastening in such manner that said fastening will not be liable to break or crumble in use.
The ordinary perforation in the shank of this class of buttonused largely as a trousersbutton-consists of a straight hole, evenly bored, and of equal diameter throughout. This leaves, necessarily, asquare edge, so that the sharp bending of the wire tends to crumble and break it. My improvement is intended to obviate this difficulty.
In theaccompanying'drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a View in perspective of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view with a portion of the fastening-wire in position.
A represents'the body of the button, and B the shank. The shank is perforated at O in such manner and shape that the portion of the shank which forms the under side of the perforation is convex in shape, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that when the wire E is drawn tightly through said perforation and against the portion of the shank beneath it, (as it would be when the button was fastened by I said wire to a garment, and especially when there was a strain upon it, as in the case of 40 Fig. 3. The portion of the button next the top of the perforation C may be straight or curved, as desired. I
V In order to provide space for the wire E, opposite vertical grooves, D, are-formed in the sides of the shank B, leading from the foot or outer end of said shank to the perforation G, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described button, provided with the shank B, said shank being provided with the lateral perforation C, the opposite months or ends of which deepen or curve downward toward the outer end of said shank, asshown, thus causing the portion of the shank forming the bottom of the perforation to be convex inshape, whereby a wire fastening may be applied without causing a sharp bend therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described button, provided with the shank B, said shank being provided with a lateral perforation and with opposite vertical grooves, D, leading from the foot or outer end of the shank to said perforation,
substantially as and for the purpose described.
JAMES F. ATWOOD.
