United States Patent Q HAIR ORNAMENT Michael Ardelyan, 57199 Van Dyke Ron, Washington, Mich.
Filed Feb. 5, 1959, Ser. No. 791,348
1 Claim. (Cl. 132-46) The ornament has the form of a disk which is adapted to be worn by female persons in combination with hair fashioned into what is popularly known as a pony tail.
The disk contemplated by me is of a size but a few inches in diameter, and is preferably made of a hard plastic material, but includes a central portion which is made of a resilient substance, such as elastic rubber, capable of being stretched. This central portion contains a circular opening through which the hair fashioned into a pony tail may be thrust in order that the hair may be kept against dispersement.
The object of the invention is to provide a disk-type ornament in which the central opening is capable of automatic adjustment to the thickness of the hair which is As for the ornamental aspect of the disk, it may be made of any suitable color, while the surface of the disk, specifically the outer portion surrounding the flexible central portion of the ornament, may carry a suitable legend, a picture, or, preferably, it may serve as a phonograph disk carrying a recording of some musical or vocal composition.
I shall now describe my improvement with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the ornament as Worn in conjunction with the hair shaped into a pony tail;
Fig. 2 is a plan elevational view of the ornament, the outer portion of which may serve as a phonograph disk;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the fragment of a disk-shaped ornament, the section including the central portion thereof.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The ornament, best shown in Fig. 2, and generally marked 10, may be made in the size of small phonograph disks now well known in trade. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the ornament is composed of two circular members 11 which are of the same diameter and each of which has a centralcircular opening 12. The two members are cemented or fused to each other to produce a single disk wherein theopenings 12 are in register with each other. However, the marginal portion of one disk, about itsopening 12, is in a spaced 2,975,788 Patented Mar. 21, 1961 relation to the corresponding marginal portion of the other disk 11 so that a free space is left between said marginal portions, as shown in Fig. 3. This serves for reception of therim 15 of the central portion of the ornament, which central portion is marked 14.
Before describing saidcentral portion 14, I wish to state that the members 11 may be made of any suitable material, especially of such material as is best desirable for the making of phonograph'disks. The material may be a resinoid plastic or such material as hard rubber. As for thecentral portion 14, this may be made of a thickness equal to the combined thickness of the two members 11. Therim 15 of thecentral portion 14 fits into the spacing between themarginal portions 13 of said members 11 and may be secured therein against displacement by being cemented to or fused with saidmarginal portions 13.
To serve the purpose for which the ornament has been devised, thecentral portion 14 has a centrally-locatedopening 17 which is preferably of a diameter to fit over the arbor of a turntable of the kind adapted to support said small size phonograph disks. Numeral 16 indicates sound-producing grooves such as appear on phonograph records.
While the diameters of the outer portion and the central portion of the ornament are not critical, the preferred dimensions are such that the diameter of the central portion is about one-half of the diameter of the outer portion, or of the ornament as a whole.
The modified ornament shown in Fig. 4 consists of a solid, relatively hard member 20, which is circular in shape, and of a flexible and elasticcentral portion 21 which has acentral opening 22. Thecentral portion 21 increases gradually in thickness towards itsrim 23 which is provided with aperipheral groove 24 in the plane of the member 20. It is said member 20 which may carry a phonographic recording, a legend, or a pictorial scene, while thecentral portion 21, with an opening 22 therein, serves as a means whereby the ornament as a whole. may be applied to the hair of a person in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
After having described my improvement, what I wish to claim is as follows:
A hair ornament consisting of an inner circular disk made of soft stretchable rubber, the disk having in the center a circular opening, and being provided in its outer rim with a radial groove all along its periphery, and a flat outer disk of a relatively hard material, the outer disk having a central aperture defined by a rim fitting into said groove for engagement with said inner disk.
