Description

(No Model.) Q IRVIN.
STAPLB PULLBR. l No. 291,739. Patented Jap. 8, 1884.
Unirse Smarts! Farrar JAMES C. IRVIN, OF SAND SPRING, IOVA.
STAPLEePULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,739, dated January 8, 1884.
Application tiled October Q5, 1883.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. IRVIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing` at Sand Spring, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Pliers; and I do hercby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to inalie and use the same, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
rIhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pliers, which are adapted more especially for the purpose otl withdrawing staples from fence-posts or other objects; and it consists in providing a pair of pliers with jaws which are wedge-shaped and converge toward each other, said jaws being provided on their straight portion with projecting lugs, which form a leverage for the iinplenient in withdrawing the staple, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view 5 Fig. 2, a front View, and Fig. 3 a side view.
A represents the handles of my improved implement, which are pivoted to each other at their upper end in the usual manner, so that the same will lie one above the other. The jaws B are constructed with upwardly and downwardly extending portions b and d, whereby the upper and lower surfaces of the saine will be on the same plane. These grasping-jaws B are bent toward each other at their end, as shown, and their upper portions are curved or wedge-shaped, so that the points will taper upwardly and increase in width toward the main portion of the jaws. These (No model.)
jaws are provided on their straight or lower surfaces with downwardly-projecting lugs C, which form a fulcrum, so that a leverage can be exerted upon the handle when the jaws are grasped upon the staple.
By providing the jaws with a wedge-shaped portion, as shown, the same, when closed upon a staple or ether object, will securely embrace the same and will close upon each other under the staple, and when it is desired to withdraw the same the lugs will form a bearing upon the post or other object in which the staple is inserted.
If desirable, this implement may be used in a different manner, the ends of the jaws being placed over the staple or other object, the lugs being opposite the bearing-surface, the curved or wedge-shaped portion of the jaws will act as a rolling fulcrum.
If desirable, this implement may be provided either in front or tothe rear of the pivot with cutters, as shown in dotted lines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rIhc improved implement, intended primarily as a puller for staples, consisting of the handles A A, pivoted to each other and provided in front ot' their pivoted portion with wedge-shaped jaws, the points of which abut against each other, said jaws being provided upon their plane surface with downwardlyprojecting lugs', the parts being organized substantially as shown, and forthe purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aii'lx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. IRVIN.
