Claims. (Cl. 249) The invention relates to bibs designed for use on infants or small children and it is the object of the invention to obtain a construction which may be easily placed upon and secured in position on the child and as easily removed when no longer needed. It is a further object to obtain a construction-which may be manufactured and sold at relatively low cost so that, it may be disposed of after a single use. Still further it is an object to obtain a construction which is comfortable for the child to wear and not likely to be detached by the wearer. With these objects in view the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.

The bib is formed of paper or paper like material and includes a body portion A generally rectangular in form and a circular neck band portion B at the upper end of the portion A and integral therewith. The upper part of this neck portion is divided by notches C and C into left and right hand segments B, B which however remain attached to each other by a narrow connecting portion B Thus, by tearing this portion B the segments B, B may be overlapped and attached to each other when wrapped around the neck of the child.

To form an easy means of attaching these segments to each other, each has a portion of the area of its surface coated with a material which will adhere to a like coated surface against which it is pressed but is not adherent to an uncoated surface. As shown in Fig. 1, a narrow segmental band D is coated on the front face of the left hand segment B and a similar band D is on the rear face of the right hand segment B both being slightly spaced from a common vertical central line therebetween. Thus, the bibs may be stacked without contacting the coated surface of one with the coated surface of the next adjacent bib in the stack. The material used for this coating having the characteristics as described is known under the name of dry seal adhesive. It may be applied to the areas D and D of the bib while in liquid condition and by any suitable means. These coated areas are central of the collar segments, being spaced from both the outer and inner contours thereof. Also on the inner contour there is a portion B which may be turned out as a flange presenting a larger area of contact against the neck of the wearer than the mere thickness of the paper. A further feature is one or more notches C formed in the outer edge of one or both of the segments B and B for a purpose hereinafter described.

In use the bib removed from the package or stack first has the portion B between the notches C and C torn to separate the segments B and B The adjacent ends of these segments are then drawn apart sutficiently to pass around the neck of the wear and are then overlapped to press the under face of the segment B against the top face of the segment B. This will bring portions of the coated areas D and D in contact which will tightly adhere to each other and hold the bib in place. When it is desired to remove the bib the collar portion is torn. Inasmuch as the notches C and C have been destroyed by the overlapping of the segments B and B one of the additional notches C may be used for starting the tearing apart of the portions of the collar on opposite sides thereof and thus disengaging them from the neck of the wearer.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4 the outer and inner edges of the collar segments B and B are seal loped, thus facilitating tearing apart at various points.

What I claim as my invention is: r

1. A bib comprising an elongated sheet of paper-like material provided in spaced relation to one end thereof with an opening for receiving the neck of a wearer and provided between said opening and said one end with spaced longitudinally aligned oppositely opening substantially V-shaped notches having closed apices and respectively opening outwardly through the end aforesaid of said sheet and opening inwardly through an edge of said opening, the materialbetween and in longitudinal alignment with the closed'apices of said notches constituting an integral longitudinally extending severable link between laterally spaced transversely extending portions of said material respectively upon opposite sides of said link, said spaced portions being adapted to be overlapped after the link aforesaid is severed, the front of one of said spaced portions and the back of the other of said spaced portions being provided respectively with adhesive coatings adapted to be adhered only to each other when said spaced portions are overlapped, whereby said portions will be held against accidental displacement when the opening aforesaid receives the neck of the wearer.

A bib comprising an elongated sheet of paper-like material provided in spaced relation to one end thereof with an opening for receiving the neck of a wearer and provided between said opening and said one end with spaced longitudinally aligned oppositely opening notches having closed ends and respectively opening outwardly through the end aforesaid of said sheet and opening inwardly through an edge of said opening, the material between and in longitudinal alignment with the closed ends of said notches constituting an integral longitudinally extending severable link between laterally spaced transversely extending portions of said material respectively upon opposite sides of said link, said laterally spaced transversely extending portions being adapted to be overlapped after the link aforesaid is severed and having surfaces provided respectively with means adapted to be connected to each other when said spaced portions are overlapped, whereby said portions will be held against accidental displacement when the opening aforesaid receives the neck of the wearer, a relatively narrow strip of the material extending circumferentially of said opening from opposite sides of said inwardly opening notch being turned outwardly at substantially right angles to the plane of said sheet, adjacent ends of said turned-out strip being adapted to freely overlap each other to form. a collar about the neck of the-rwearer when the means aforesaid are connected to each other.

A bib comprising an elongated sheet of paper-like material provided in spaced relation to one end thereof with an opening for receiving the neck of a wearer and provided between said opening and said one end with spaced longitudinally aligned oppositely opening notches having closed ends and respectively opening outwardly through the end aforesaid of said sheet and opening Patented Adg. 25, 1959 inwardly through an edge of said opening, the material between and in longitudinal alignment with the closed ends of said notches constituting an integral longitudinally extending severable link between laterally spaced transversely extending portions of said materialrespectivelyupon opposite sides of said link; said laterally spaced transversely extending portions being adapted to be overlapped after the link aforesaid is severed-and having sur faces provided respectively with means adapted to be connected to each other when said spaced portions :are overlapped, whereby said portions will be held against accidental displacement when the opening aforesaid receives the neck of the wearer, a relatively narrow strip of the material extending circumferentially of said opening from opposite sides of said inwardly opening notch.

A bib comprising an elongated sheet of paper-like material provided in spaced relation to one end thereof with an opening for receiving the neck of a wearer and provided between said opening and said one end with spaced longitudinally aligned oppositely opening notches having closed ends and respectively opening outwardly through the end aforesaid of said sheet and opening inwardly through an edge of said opening, the material between and in longitudinal alignment with the closed ends of said notches constituting an integral longitudi- 551; extending severable link between laterally spaced transversely extending portions of said material respectively upon opposite sides of said link, said spaced portions being adapted to be overlapped after the link aforesaid is severed, the front of one of said spaced portions and the back of the other of said spaced portions being provided respectively with means adapted to be connected to each other when said spaced portions are overlapped, whereby said portions will be held against accidental displacement when the opening aforesaid receives the neck of the wearer.

5 A bib comprising an elongated sheet of paper-like material provided in spaced relation to one end thereof with an opening for receiving the neck of a wearer and provided between said opening and an outer edge of said sheet with a notch having a closed inner end and opening outwardly through the outer edge aforesaid of said sheet, the closed inner end of said notch being spaced from the adjacent edge of said opening, the material between the closed end of said notch and said opening constituting an integral severable link between spaced portions of said material respectively upon opposite sides of said link, said spaced portions being adapted to be overlapped after the link aforesaid is severed and having surfaces provided respectively with means adapted to be connected to each other when said spaced portions are overlapped, whereby said portions will be held against accidental displacement when the opening aforesaid receives the neck of the wearer.
