The connectingstrip 13 is stitched, as at 17, along the interior marginal edge of the crown and about the whole of the circumference thereof to have the fold 16 of the strip adjacent the lower edge of the crown and so that thelegs 14, 15 thereof extend normally upwardly into the crown. The interior edge of the continuous turn-downinband 12 is stitched, as at 18, between thelegs 14, 15. The inband selectively can be turned up into the crown against the inside surface thereof, or turned down, as in the drawings, in covering relation to the head, the forehead, the ears and the upper portion of the neck of a wearer of the cap.

'Ihe continuous turn-downinband 12 is constituted as an elongated piece ofmaterial 19 and anexpansible gore 20. Theelongated piece 19 is continuous about the front, sides and portions of the rear of the crown and is adapted to extend, when the inband is turned down, over the upper forehead, ears and por-tions of the rear of the neck at the sides thereof. End edges of said clon# gated piece are denoted 21, 21. Theexpansible gore 20 desirably can consist of customary fabric into which elastic material, such as threads of rubber, are interwoven. As s'hown, theexpansible gore 20 is composed as a length of material bent upon itself, as at 22, at an unsecured edge of the continuous turn-down inband. Abinding strip 23 is stitched, as at 24, to and continuously about the exterior edge of theelongated piece 19.

Said elongated piece of material of the turn-downinband 12 is constituted as two separate plies, represented 25 and 26, respectively, in superimposed relation, as disclosed in Figs. 5, 7, 8 and 9 of the drawings. The inner edge of the rplies 25, 26 are straight andthe inner edge portions of said plies of theelongated piece 19 are secured by thestitching 18 to and between the ex-v terior edge portions of thelegs 14, 15 of the connectingstrip 13, and the outer edge portions of said plies are secured by thestitching 24 between folds ofthebinding strip 23. Theply 26 is a single'piece of material yas shown. 'Iheply 25 also is continuous but constituted as two pieces of sewed together material. The outer edge of theelongated piece 19 is curvilinear at each side thereof .and generally S-shaped to provide a r'elativelynarrow forehead covering portion, a relatively wide ear covering portion and a narrowing rear covering'portion. Each of theend edges 21,21 of said elongated lpiece 4extends "at an angle to the secured edge thereof. 'v

Theexpansible gore 20 is situated centrally of the crown at the rear thereof and tapers in direction from its location of jointure with the'crown -to the outer edges of Itheelongated piece 19 of thel turn-down inband. Each of the opposite side edges of each fold of the'expansible gore is stitched, as at 28, tothe adjacent end edge portion of a ply, 25 or'26, as lthe case may be, of theelongated piece 19, and the opposite side edge portions o-f said expansible gore folds lie between saidplies 25 and 26, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 9. `Edge `portions of the folds of said expansible gore adjacent the crown are stitched, as at 27, to and between thelegs 14, 15 of the connectingstrip 13, as well as between theend edges 21, 21 of said elongated piece. The end edge portions of theplies 25, 26 are yfolded inwardly of theelongated piece 19 and the side edge portions of the folds of the expansible gore lie between the inwardly folded end edge portions of saidplies 25, 26. Thestitching 18, 27 secures the end portions of the folds of theexpansible gore 20 and the end portions of theplies 25, 26 ofthe elongated piece A19 in overlapping relation. vThe .unsecured edge of the expansible gore, bent upon itself at 22, terminates ush with the curvilinear edges of the rearward end portions of the elongated piece of material to extend as a relatively smooth projection of the curvilinear side edges of said elongated piece.

The continuous turn-downinband 12 will be of width at the front thereof to lie in. snug covering relation to the front and sides of the forehead, at the sides thereof to lie in snug covering relation to the ears and at the "rear thereof to lie in snug covering relation to an upper portion of the rear of the neck of a wearer.

The expansible gore 2l) will become partially stretched over the rear of the neck in direction transversely of the crown upon application of the cap to the head with theinband 12 turned down, and' the stretched expansible gore will resiliently retain the full length of thebinding strip 23 in engaged relation with the front and sides of the forehead, the opposite sides of the face beneath the ears and portionsy of the neck at opposite sides of said expansible gore. The ears of a wearer will lie within the ear covering portions. With movement of the head to different positions the inband will be capable of becoming increasingly stretched. No matter what may be the relative position of the head and neck of a wearer, the continuous inband and its binding strip will be snugly fitted. The expansible gore will expand in response to movements of the head which increase the circumference of the inband and contract with head movements which permit the circumference of the inband to become decreased. The inband of a cap made according to the invention can be readily and easily placed in covering relation to the head, ears and neck of a wearer.

Inasmuch as the turn-downinband 12 is continuous, the whole of the head of a wearer, the ears and the upper portion of the rear of the neck are completely covered and. protected, it being here noted that an important purpose of a cap` with turn-down inband is protection of parts of a wearer below the lower edge of the crown of a head covering when worn without turn-down inband.

The connectingstrip 13 is incorporated in such a way that two thicknesses thereof are between the head and the crown of the cap when the inband is up and four thicknesses are so positioned when the inband is down. The thickness of the connecting stn'p is doubled when the inband is turned down. The additional bulk holds the cap and inband more snugly in place than would otherwise be the case. The action of the expansible Igore will be effectively transmitted equally to all portions of the elongated piece and the cap will be held snugly in place.

What is claimed is:

1. A cap comprising a crown adapted to be fitted upon the head, a continuous U-shaped connecting strip including a pair of legs and a fold joining said legs to each other, said strip being secured -along an interior marginal edge` of the crown to have said fold adjacent the lower edge of said crown, said legs of said U-shaped strip extending normally upwardly into said crown, a continuous normally upwardly positioned turn-down inband secured along an edge thereof 'between the legs of said -U-shaped connecting strip for the whole circumference thereof, said continuous turn-down inband being constituted as an elongated piece of material continuous about the front, sides and portions of the rear of said crown and an expansible gore at the rear of the crown, said elongated piece of material having a straight secured edge, a pair of end edges and oneach side of the longitudinal center line of the crown a curvilinear outer edge generally S-shaped to provide a relatively narrow forehead covering; portion, -a relatively wide ear covering portion and a narrowing rear. neck covering portion, said inband lying in snug covering relation to the head and ears and upper portion of the rear of the neck when extended downwardly' from the crown, each of said end edges `extending at an angle to the secured edge of said elongated piece of material, said expansible gore lling the gore being constituted as a length of material folded down upon itself at its unsecured edge.

2. A cap comprising a crown adapted to be fitted upon the head, a continuous U-shaped connecting strip including a pair of legs and a fold joining said legs to each other, said strip being secured along an interior marginal edge of the crown to have said fold adjacent the lower edge of said crown, said legs of said U-shaped strip extending. normally upwardly into said crown, a continuous normally upwardly positioned turn-down inband secured along an edge thereof vbetween the legs of said U-shaped connecting strip for the whole circumference thereof, said continuous turn-down inband being constituted as an elongated piece of material continuous about the front, sides and portions of the rear of said crown and an expansible gore at the rear of the crown, said elongated piece of material having a straight secured edge, a pair of endl edges and on each side of the longitudinal center liner of the crown an outer edge generally tapered i to provide a relatively narrow forehead covering portion,

a relatively wide ear covering portion and a rear neck covering portion, said inband lying in` snug covering relation to the `head and ears and upper portion of the rear of the neck when extended downwardly from the crown, each of said-end edges extending at an angle to the secured edge of said elongated piece of material, said expansible gore: filling the space and extending between and being connected to said end edges and having an unsecured edge extending as a relatively smooth projection of the outer side edges of the elongated piece, and a binding strip secured to said outer edges of the elongated piece of material, said elongated piece being constituted as two separate plies in superimposed relation, each of said plies being continuous across the front of the crown, and said expansible gore being constituted as alength of material folded down upon itself at its unsecured edge.

The combination as specified in claim 2 wherein the end edge portions of the plies of said elongated piece are folded inwardly thereof, the side edge portions of the folds of said expansible gore lie between the inwardly folded end edge portions of saidplies and the opposite side edges of each fold of the expansible gore are stitched to end edges of a ply of the elongated piece adjacent thereto.

A cap comprising a crown adapted to be tted upon the head, a continuous U-shaped connecting strip in.- cluding a pair of legs and a fold joining said legs to each other, said strip being secured along an interior marginal edge of the crown to have said fold adjacent the lower edge of said crown, said legs of said U-shaped strip extending normally upwardly into said crown, a continuous normally upwardly positioned turn-down inband secured along an edge thereof between the legs of said U-shaped connecting strip for the whole circumference thereof, said continuous turn-down inband being constituted as an elongated piece of material continuous about the front, sides and portions of the rear of said crown and an expansible gore at the rear of the crown, said elongated piece of material having a straight securededge, a pair of end edges and an outer edge spaced from said straight secured edge to provide'fore'- head, ear and rear neck covering portions, said inband lying in snug covering relation to the head, ears and upper portions of the rear of the neck when extended downwardly from the crown, each of said end edges extending atV an angle to the secured edge of said elongated piece, said expansible gore filling the space'and extending lbetween and being connected to said end edges and having an unsecured edge extending as a relatively smooth projection of said outer side edge of the elongated piece, and a binding strip secured to said outer edge of said elongated piece, the elongated piece 4being constituted as two separate plies in superimposed relation, each of said plies being continuous across the front of the crown, said expansible gore being constituted as a length of material folded upon itself at its unsecured edge, end edge portions of the plies of the elongated piece being folded inwardly thereof, side edge portions of the folds of the expansible .gore lying between the inwardly folded end edge portions of said plies and opposite side edges of each fold of said expansible gore being stitched to the end edges of a ply of the elongated piece adjacent thereto.
