GARTER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,841, dated June 26, 1860.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, JOSIAH P. FULLER, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, and the accompanying drawing shows my band in one of its simplest forms.

The nature of my invention consists in the application of a steel spring to the formation of a band for a garter, which shall encircle or clasp around the leg over the stocking in such a manner, that it shall be securely held in place; the characteristic feature of said spring or garter, consisting in tempering it while in the coil, in contradistinction to tempering it in the Hat state.

Each spring being out the requisite length and width, is coiled to the size required, and while thus coiled is tempered. By being thus tempered in the coil, the spring possesses a great contractile force, in every portion, which securely holds theA stocking in place, while the expansive power of the spring allows the muscles of the leg to actwith freedom.

The width of the garter is varied by using one or more springs. The circumference of the coil is adapted to the size of the limb to which it is applied. The sizes are indicated by numbers.

To form the garter the springs are covered with various fibrous materials ornamented to suit various tastes. The ends of the garter are finished with tips made of different materials, and in various forms.

In the drawing herewith presented, a indicates the spring within its cover, bf the cover; c, c, the tips by which the ends are linished.

I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the garter, constructed as described.
