Application November 16, 1953, Serial No. 392,308
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-39) This invention relates to surgical corsets.
In conventional surgical corsets, the separable back portions are secured together by laces which are in turn threaded through buckleplates adjustable along side straps secured at one end to each side of the corset. By adjusting the aforesaid buckle plates carrying these laces, it is possible to adjust -the siz-e of the corset to the dimensions of the wearer. However, the side straps along which the buckle plates are adjustable are secured at only one end to the body of the corset, the other ends of the straps being free to facilitate the mounting thereon of the adjustable buckle carrying the buckle plate. These free ends dangle in an unsightly manner and form objectionable protrusions visible through the outer garment.
'It' is accordingly a principal object of the present invention to provide in a surgical corset vnovel means for preventing the free ends of the straps from dangling in an unsightly manner.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means in a surgical corset for interconnecting the free ends of the side straps across the back or front of the wearer in a self-adjustable manner, said means reinforcing the corset proper.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a surgical corset which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and ei`n`cient in use and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is an outside plan view of a surgical corset spread flat and showing the invention incorporated thereon;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
. Figure3 is a rear elevational view showing the corset 1n operatlve use;
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of the invention;
Flgures 5 and 6 are rear views in elevation showing the corset in operative use.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to Figure 1, there is generally indicated at the surgical corset including a pair ofseparable back panels 11 and 12, thepanels 11 and 12 along their adjacent vertical edges being provided with the usual eyes 13.
Theback panels 11 and 12 are also provided along their lower edges with the usual V-shaped eut outs 14 across which are securedelastic material 15` by means of the stitching 16.
The usualvertical stays 17 extending from top to bottom of the corset are mounted on the inner faces of theback panels 11 and 12 by means of vertical pockets 18 secured in position by stitching 19 (Figure 2).
The outer vertical edge of theback panel 11 is secured to aleft panel 20 by the stitching 19a (Figure 2),decorative border strips 21 being provided on the upper edge RCC ' 2 of theback panel 11 and overlapping the inner edge of theside panel 20. Decorative border strips22 are provided on the lower edge Vof theside panel 20 and extend inwardly to the' cut out 14. An inner decorative border strip 23 is also provided on the lower edge of theback panel 11.
.A reinforcing strip 24 is secured to the outer vertical edge of theside panel 20 by means of stitching 25 (Figure l), the strip 24 being provided with vertically spaced eyes 26. Adecorative border strip 27 connects the upper edges of the strip 24andside panel 20 and is secured in place by stitching 28.
A leftupper side strap 29 is secured at one end intermediate the adjacent edges of theback panel 11 and side panel 2t), abuckle 30 being adjustable alongstrap 29 and pivotally mounting aplate 31 having a plurality of openings 32.
A bottomleft side strap 33 has one end secured in position by a reinforcingflap 34 and stitching 35, theap 34 being secured `to theside panel 20 by thestitching 36 and 25. A 'second buckle 37 is adjustable along thestrap 33 and pivotally mounts a second plate 38 provided with aplurality of openings 39.Loops 40 and 41 of flexible material are secured at opposite ends intermediate the adjacent edges of theback panel 11 andside panel 20 and serve to surround thestraps 29 and 33, respectively, in the manner shown.
Aright side panel 42 is similarly secured along its vertical edge to the adjacent vertical edge of theback panel 12 by means of stitching 43, which latter also servesto mount `the rightupper side strap 44, the upper loop 45 and thelower loop 46. Decorative border strip 47 is provided along the upper edge of theback panel 12 and overlaps theright side panel 42.
A buckle 48 is adjustable along the upperright strap 44 and pivotally mounts a plate 49 provided with a plurality of openings 50.
Afront panel 51 is secured along one vertical edge to the adjacent vertical edge of theright side panel 42 by means of stitching 52, thefront panel 51 being provided with vertical stays 53 secured by stitching 54. Thefront panel 51 at its center is provided along its lower edge with an upwardly extending, V-shaped cut out 54' adapted to be aligned with the crotch of the wearer when the corset is in the wearing position of Figure 3,elastic material 55 being disposed across cut out 54 and secured in this position by the stitching 56. Adecorative border strip 57 is secured to the upper edge of thefront panel 51 and overlaps theright side panel 42, while a decorative border strip 58 is secured to the lower edge of the front panel adjacent the outer end thereof. Adecorative border strip 59 is secured to the lower edge of theright side panel 42 and overlaps both thefront panel 51 and the rear panel 12 (Figure 1).
A plurality of vertically spaced hooks 60 are mounted on the inner face of thefront panel 51 along the outer vertical edge thereof, the hooks 60 being adapted toengage the eyes 26 whereby to secure the corset about the wearer, as shown in Figure 3.
A lowerright side strap 61 is secured in position by a reinforcingflap 62 and stitching 63, theap 62 being in turn secured by stitching 64 to theright side panel 42. Abuckle 65 is adjustable alongstrap 61 and pivotally mounts a plate 66 having a plurality of openings 67.
The usualstocking support straps 68 are suitably mounted at the lower edges of theback panels 11 and 12.
A continuous lacing 69 is threaded through the openings 39 and 67 in the plates 38 and 66, respectively, and certain of the eyes 13, whereby to connect theback panels 11 and 12 together in the manner indicated. A second continuous lacing 70 is similarly threaded through the openings 32 and 50 provided in theplates 31 `and'49, respectively, an'd lthroughuppermost eyes 13.
In the usual manner of surgical corset constructions, by adjusting thebuckles 30 and 37 laterally away from thebuckles 38 and 65, respectively, the lacings 69 kand 70 will be subjected to a Ttension, thus drawing the adjacent edges offthe backp'anels 11 and 12 closer together and tightening the corset 'about the wearer.
In the practice f my invention, the free ends -of thestraps 29, '33, 44 and'61 are folded back upon `themselves in the manner shown and are secured in this position by stitching`7'1, 72, l73 and 74, respectively, providing reinforced ends. These doubled-up .end portions are provided with aligned openings therethrough through which are threadedelastic cords 75, 76, 77 and 78. The inner ends of thecords 75, 76, 77Vand 78 "are knotted to secure the cords within the reinforced ends in the Ymanner indicated. The Y'other 'ends ofthecords remain free -until the corset 'is mounted upon the wearer as shown in Figure 3. u Then, the adjacent .pairs of cords are bow-tied across the back 'of the wearer. Thus, the cord 75 is bowtied to thecord 77, while thecord 76 is bow-tied to thecord 78. This stretches the free ends of the straps Y29, 33, 44 and 561 so `as to lie flush with the rear face of the -corset and avoids thereby unsightly dangling andthe forming of objectionable obstructions visible through the outer garment. The connection of these free ends across the 'back of the wearer it will be noted, further reinforces the Alacings 6 9 and 70. Preferably,eyes 79, 80, 81 and 82 Vare provided in the doubled-up ends of thestraps 29, 33, y44and6l, respectively.
Thus, by doubling the ends of thestraps 29, 33, 44 and` 61 Iback upon themselves and providing the stitching 71,72, 73 and74, these free ends are reinforced and receive therethrough the ends of theelastic cords 75, 76,
77 and 78, the eyes l79, 80, l81 and 8`2 reinforcing the openings in the reinforced ends. By securing the elastic cords 75 through 78 across the back of the wearer, the free ends of thestraps 29, 33, 44 and 61 are prevented from dangling in an unsightly manner and further reinforce the lacings 69 and 70.
Figures 5 and 6 show upper straps 44 and 29 andlower straps 62 and 33 secured across the front and side of the wearer.
While various changes `maybe made in the detail construction, it sha-ll be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit vandfscope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A corset comprising la Yplurality of panels and at least one pair of cooperating adjustment straps each secured at one of its ends to one of said panels, each of said straps carrying an adjustment buckle through a strap loop, each of said buckles having openings therein, lacing threaded through said openings in each of `said buckles for connecting said cooperating Vadjustment"straps, a-loop through which each of said adjustment straps and the free loop ends thereof are .adapted to .pass and being secured to diierent corset panels, .an elastic-strip foreach of said straps Ysecured to thef-ree ends thereof and'being adapted to be tied Vtogether under tension to maintain the strap ends in taut and aligned positions.
