Description

March 5, 1957 P. P. DELANEY CIGARETTE CARTON *2 INVENTOR l PA-rmcx P. Bananen' March 5, 1957 P. P. DELANEY CIGARETTE CARTON 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Sept. 28, -1954 B6. 9
4@ FIGJS mvENToR IDM-Rmx F? DELANEY ATTORNEYS United Sttes This invention relates to cartons, and more particularly to cigarette cartons.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a cigarette carton which will readily accommodate both king size and regular size packages of cigarettes therein for display purposes, and for the convenience of a purchaser who desires both cigarette pack sizes when purchasing the carton of cigarettes.
Since the advent of the king size cigarette, and its growing popularity, it is common for smokers to purchase both the regular and king size packs of cigarettes in carton lots, and may wish to purchase a single carton containing both cigarette sizes in the case where the cigarettes are to be shared with another person preferring one cigarette size, while the purchaser prefers the other, or where the purchaser buys the cigarettes to be used by persons attendinl7 a party. Hence, it will be convenient for the purchaser to be able to buy a single carton having an equal number of both sizes of cigarettes snugly contained within the cigarette carton. Therefore, the cigarette carton of the present invention has been developed with this in view.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a cigarette carton which will accommodate both regular and king size packs of cigarettes therein and which will involve very little additional expense in the manufacture of the carton, and which is capable of mass production by present carton making machinery without the necessity of devising new machines or methods in its fabrication.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent. from a consideration of the following detailed description, forming the specification, and taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l4 is a top plan view similar to Figure 13, but showing the employment of the additional ller of Figures 6 to 8 in the carton and the disposition of the cigarette packs within the carton; and
Figure l5 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken substantially along the line 15-15 of Figure 14.
With continued reference to the drawings, there is shown in Figure 1 a blank of sheet material, generally indicated at 10, from which the cigarette carton of this invention is erected. The material may be of cardboard or other commercial material of similar structure, such as paperboard or other brous sheet material readily adaptable to the use intended. y
The blank 10 comprises a central, longitudinally ex'- tendingsection 12 dened between lines offold 14 and 16 disposed in spaced parallel relation and the central portion of end lines offold 18 and 20. Thecentral section 12 will dene the bottom wall of the erected carton.
A pair of elongatedrectangular sections 22 and 24, of the same length as thecentral section 12, extend contiguous therewith along the lines offold 14 and 16 at opposite sides of the central section with thesection 22 being deiined between the line offold 16 and the. line offold 26 in spaced parallel relation to theline 16 and extending only partially of its length, the remainder of thesection 22 along the edge remote from theline of fold i6 being defined by theedge 28 of theY blank 10 which is in longitudinalalignrnent. with the line of fold26.v
Thesection 24 is defined between the lineof fold 14 and a line offold 30 of the same length and in spacedk parallel relation to the line 14, and thesection 24 has its end limits defined by the respective lines of fold118 and 20. In this latter regard, the lines. of fold 18'and- 20 also deiine the end lirnits of thesection 22.
Extending outwardly from thesection 24 and of. Ythe same length, is atop cover section 32 extending from to the otherlongitudinal edgel 34 remote from the edge 2'8 and defined at its end: limitsr by theend edges 36 and 38 disposed in spaced: parallel. relation. A line offold 40 extends in spaced paralleli. relation to thelongitudinal edge 34 and closely adjacent thereto between theend edges 36. and 38. to define alclosure lip section 42.
The end wall sections, generally indicatedyatl 44 and. 46 respectively, are of generally elongated4 rectangular form and are defined alongone longitudinal edge bythe respective lines of fold 1'3 and 20 and. extend longitude nally outwardly from these lines of fold to their outerlongitudinal edges 43 and 50 respectively, which are in. spaced parallel relation to the respectivelinesv of'fold 18v and 2l). Theend wall sections 44 and. 46 are provided, with spaced transverse lines of cut 52 and 54 extending from the respective lines of fold 14 and4 16 and in alignv ment therewith to the other longitudinal edges 4.8 and 50. respectively, in each ofthe end wall sections. f
A ller tab, generally indicatedY at 56, projects outwardly from the front wall' section. 22 along thef liner offold 26 andis defined between' the spa-ced para-lleliedgesi and 6i) with the edge 6b being; in alignment with the line:
of fold 2b and theend edge 38 to deline end edges for the filler tab sectionSe. A front. edge" 62 is disposed' inE spaced parallel relation' to the line offold 26 andi extends between the end.edgesA 58 and 60, s-o that the tiller'tab section. isv of generally rectangularl form withl the end'ed'geAv S8- bei'ng disposed substantially perpendicularly tif the edge128 and extending therefrom atv theA juncture "o5 tl'ef edge 28 with the line offold 26.
- TheiillerV tab section 56 includes longitudinally spaced parallel lines offold 64 and 66 extending between theend edges 58 and 60. A line of cut GS is provided in the filler tab section` 56 at a location intermediate the -end edgesSS and 60, ,but more closely theendedg'e 58, landxtends from' a line of fold 70 extending between the end of the line ofcut 68 and the end edge 5S with the line ofcut 68 Opening to thefront edge 62.AThel'blank 10 may Vthen be erected by folding about the 'lines'of fold to define the erected carton, generally indicated at 72, wherein the bottom of the carton is defined by thesection 12, the front and rear walls by thesections 22 and 24 respectively, with thetop cover section 32 extending from the upper end of therear wall 24 and pivotally connected thereto along the line offold 30. Thecarton cover 32 is provided with a closure lip defined by theclosure lipV section 42.
vTheintermediate sections 49 and 51 of the respective en'd wallsections 44 and 46 deiine the end walls of the carton with the oppositely disposedend sections 53 and 55 and each of theend wall sections 46 and 43 are disposed inwardly of theintermediate sections 49 and 51 and may be secured thereto to complete the erection of thecarton, except for the liller tab. Thus, the ends of thecarton 72 are defined by theintermediate sections 49 and 51 extending upwardly from the bottom orbase 12 and between the front andrear walls 22 and 24 which are also carried by the bottom orbase 12 along opposite longitudinal edges thereof. Y
With regard to thefiller tab section 56, this section will be first bent about thefold line 26 toward thefront wall 22 and then bent about the spaced parallel line offold 66 Vto define therebetween thetop portion 74. As the filler tab is again bent along the line offold 64 in the same direction as the direction in which the ller tab section is bentaroundthe lines offold 26 and 66, there will be defined between thelines 66 and 64 a central portion' 76 defining a Wall which will be in spaced parallel relation to thefront wall 22 when thesection 56 is fully foldedfand spaced from the base of thefront wall 22 at the juncture thereof with the bottom orbase 12 at the line offold 16 by theend spacer portion 78 defined between the line offold 64 and thefront edge 62 and extending between theend edge 60 and the line ofcut 68.
,That portion of thefiller tab section 56 defined betweenthe line of fold 70,front edge 62 and theend edge 58 and line of cut, 68, and indicated at 80, defines an extension member which, when folded about the line of fold 70 after being folded along the line offold 64 in a direction toward thefront wall 22, will be of generally rectangular form with thefront edge 62 thereof being spaced downwardly from the lower surface of thetop portion 74, as is clearly shown in Figure 4.
e Theller section 80 is divided in two equal component sections by the linev offold 64, the sections being identified at 81 and 82 respectively. Thus, in the erectedcarton 72, andas shown in Figure 4, theouter section 82 will be in face to face engagement with the inner surface of thefront wall 22 and may be adhesively secured thereto, while the section S1 defines the bottom wall thereof which is spaced from the base or bottom of the carton at approximately a mid-point location in the height of thefront wall 22.
With the carton in its erected condition, the remainder of theller 56, which may be referred to as the body member thereof, that is, that portion of theller 56 exclusive of thesection 80 forming the extension member, will be disposed, so that thetop portion 74 will extend perpendicularly from the top of thefront wall 22 and toward therear wall 24, while thecentral wall portion 76 will depend from thetop portion 74 along the edge thereof remote from thefront Wall 22 in spaced parallel relation with the front wall to dene a generallyrectangular space 84 therebetween. Thespacer portion 78 will rest upon the upper surface of the base or bottom 12 of thecarton 72, and extend from the inner surface of the front wall to a location inwardly thereof and may be secured to the bottom wall by any suitable means, such as an adhesive.
Thus, as shown in Figure 13, a completedcarton 72 will readily accommodate the usual ten packages of cigarettes normally found in a carton of cigarettes, with tive of thepackages 86 being of regular size, with four of these packages being disposed between theback wall 24 and thewail 76 of theiiller 56 in superimposed pairs, and the fifth package ofregular size cigarettes 86 will be supported upon asingle package 88 of king size cigarettes having one narrow end thereof disposed in the space between thesection 81 of thespacer extension 80, and the base or bottom 12 of the carton and extending between the front and rear walls thereof. The other similar king size packages 88 will be placed in thecarton 72 in superimposed pairs extending between the front and rear walls and from the end of the extension with regard to the upper pair ofcigarette packages 88 and the lower pair extending between the package which has one end thereof disposed in the space beneath the filler extension 8,0 and the bottom or thebase 12 and theend wall 49.
In order to adapt thecarton 72 to receive a full complement of ten packages of regular size cigarettes, similar to thepackages 86, and as indicated at 86 in Figures 14 and l5, there is provided an additional filler member, generally indicated at 90, which is erected from the blank of material, generally indicated at 92.
The blank of material comprises a generallyrectangular body portion 94 having spaced parallel lines offold 9S, 96 and 9:? extending longitudinally thereof between the oppositelongitudinal edges 1130 and 102.
Oneear 104 extends longitudinally from thebody 94 with its outer edge coincident with thelongitudinal edge 100, and terminating in atransverse edge 106 which is parallel to the end edge 10S of the body at the end thereof remote from the end from which the ear projects. The line of fold is continued across theear 104 to dene a line offold 95.
A second ear 110, of somewhat larger size than theear 104, extends laterally from thebody 94 at the same end thereof as theear 104 with its outer edge being an extension of thelongitudinal edge 102 of the body, and terminating in anedge 112 which is transversely aligned with theedge 106 of theear 104. The adjacentlongitudinal edges 114 and 116 of theears 104 and 110 respectively, are in spa-ced parallel relation and define an open space therebetween.
The ear is divided into threeequal parts 118, 120 and 122 by spaced parallel lines offold 124 and 126.
The blank 92 will be folded about the respective lines of fold, so that the body portion thereof will deline a hollow elongated, rectangular section, defining the body of the-filler 90, while the oppositelongitudinal edges 100 and 102 may be joined together in any suitable manner to maintain thebody 94 in its erected condition. Thus, insofar as thebody 94 is concerned, those parts between the oppositelongitudinal edges 160 and 102 and the adjacent lines offold 95 and 98 respectively, define thebottom wall 128 and a side wall 13d, while those parts of the body extending between the lines offold 9S, 96 and 96, 98 define theopposite side walls 132 and thetop wall 134 respectively. Thus, itwill be apparent that the free edge of the side wall will be joined to thefree edge 100 of the bottom wall 125.
Theear 104 is folded about the line 95' and will, therefore, extend laterally from thebody 94 with the onesection 136 being an extension of the bottom wall 12S, while theother section 140 will be an extension of theside wall 132. The line ofcut 142 is provided along one end edge of thebody 94 remote from theend edge 108 and extending from theedge 116 of the ear 110 into the juncture of thefold line 126 with thebody 94 and an additional line offold 144 extends from the end of the line ofcut 142 to thelongitudinal edge 102. Thus, as the ear 110 is folded about thelongitudinal lines 124 and 126, it will assume a substantially U-shape and will mate with the foldedear 104, so that thepart 118 will be in face to face contact with the inner surface of thepart 140 and may be secured thereto as by a suitable adhesive, while thepart 120 will extend perpendicularly from the edge of theear 104 remote from theedge 114 and thepart 122 will depend from thepart 120 in spaced parallel relation with thesection 140. Thus, the free edges delining extensions of thelongitudinal edges 100 and 102 respectively, will be brought into contact and may be secured together at the same time and by the same means as thelongitudinal edges 1110 and 102 are secured together. Thus, theears 104 and 110 define a filler extension.
Thus, in using the filling orfiller member 90, it will be disposed within thecarton 72 with the extension, generally indicated at 91, received in the space between the lower face of the section 31 and the upper surface of the bottom 12 with theside wall 132 of the ller member in face to face relation with the inner surface of thefront wall 22, while theopposite side wall 132 is in coplanar relation with theside wall 76 of the iller 56. Thus, the space normally provided for the additional length of the ve packages of king size cigarettes SS will be taken up by the fillingmember 90 to permit the use of thecarton 72 for exclusively regular size packages ofcigarettes 86.
It will be appreciated that, if it is desired to employ thecarton 72 for exclusively king size packages of cigarettes, thefiller tab section 56 may be severed along the line offold 26 and removed from the carton.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that there has been provided acigarette carton 72 of at sheet material which comprises a bottom 12, a pair of spaced front andrear walls 22 and 24, endWalls 49 and 51 also carried by said bottom 12 and extending between the front and back walls at opposite ends thereof, and afiller 56 carried by thefront wall 22 and disposed within the carton adjacent the front Wall and extending for a predetermined distance longitudinally thereof to occupy a predetermined space between the front and rear walls of the carton. Thefiller 56 comprises a body member which is defined by that portion of the filler exclusive of thesection 80 thereof which body m-ember includes aside wall 76 disposed in spaced parallel relation to thefront wall 22 and extending from one end of thewall 51 of the carton to a predetermined location intermediate the ends of the front wall, and a ller extension defined by thesection 80 carried by the body member and extending longitudinally therefrom from one end thereof remote from theend wall 51 with the extension being of approximately one-half of the height of the body with its bottom wall S1 being spaced from the bottom of the carton to receive one end of a king size package ofcigarettes 88 in the space therebetween. It will be noted that the height of thefiller 56 is the same as the height of thefront wall 22 which is equal in height to therear wall 24.
In addition, aseparate lling member 90 may be inserted removably in thecarton 72, the fillingmember 90 having abody 94 which body includes spacedparallel side walls 130 and 132, the filler having itsbody 94 extending from one end of the body member of thefiller 56 remote from thecarton end wall 51 to theother end wall 49 of the carton with one of the side walls of the filling member body disposed in face to face relation with the inner surface of thecarton front wall 22 and the other of itsside walls 132 being coplanar with the side Walls of the body member of thefiller 56 disposed in spaced relation to thefront wall 22. An extension 91 is carried by the tillingmember body 94 and occupies the space between the filler extension delined by the section and the bottom of the carton to adapt the carton for packing regular size packages of cigarettes only.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristic's thereof. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
A cigarette carton of flat sheet material comprising a bottom, a pair of spaced front and rear walls carried by said bottom, and end walls carried by said bottom and extending between said front and rear walls at opposite ends thereof, and a filler carried by said front wall and disposed within the carton adjacent said front wall and extending a predetermined distance longitudinally of the front wall to occupy a predetermined space between said front and rear walls, said filler comprising a body member including a side wall in spaced parallel relation to said front wall and extending from one end wall of the carton to a location intermediate the ends ofsaid front wall, and a filler extension having a side and Ya bottom wall carried by said body member and extending longitudinally therefrom from one end thereof remote from said one end wall, said extension being of approximately one-half the height of said body with its bottom wall being spaced from the bottom of said carton, and a liller member having spaced parallel side walls and extending from one end of said filler extension remote from said one end wall to the other end wall of the carton with one of said side walls disposed in face to face relation with the inner surface of said carton front wall and the other of its side walls coplanar withthe side wall of said body member, and an extension carried by said filler member to extend longitudinally from the end thereof remote from said other end wall to be received in the space between the ller extension and the bottom of said carton to adapt the carton for packaging of regular size packs of cigarettes only.
