Description

Aug. 9, 1955 u. B. CHAMBERS DIAPER Filed April 13, 1953 United States Patent DIAPER Urey B. Chambers, Jackson, Tenn. Application April 13, 1953, Serial No. 348,514 1 Claim. (Cl. 128-287) This invention is in diapers and is particularly a disposable diaper.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a disposable diaper which may be held securely in place upon an infant without the use of pins or other mechanical fastening devices.
Another object is to provide a simple, efiicient, and inexpensive diaper.
A further object is to provide, in effect, a simple diaper and moisture-proof covering therefor, the entire structure requiring no mechanical fastening devices.
Other objects will be apparent from a reading of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is substantially a plan view of the inside portion of the diaper of my invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the outside of the diaper structure; and
Figure 3 is a section taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings and specifically to Figure 1, represents the inner surface of the diaper construction of my invention, this being formed of any convenient absorbent material such as tissue, combed cotton, or the like. The conformation of the diaper, it may be noted, is such that there is a broad portion 11 intended to cover the buttocks and to be pulled around the waist of an infant, a narrowed portion 12 intended to fit between the legs thereof, and a further broad portion 13 for covering the hips and abdomen. The absorbent element is pinked along its periphery as at 14. The lower extremity of the structure is provided with two extendingmembers 15 and 16 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The outer portion, Figure 2, of the diaper of my invention is formed of plastic, moisture-proof material 20 which preferably is sprayed on to the absorbent material after the latter is formed. It will be noticed that this plastic material is carried almost to the limits of the absorbent material, a narrow boundary of the latter, however, being retained. A similar result can, of course, be achieved by applying an absorbent pad to a preformed plastic sheet by cement or otherwise.
2,714,889 Patented Aug. 9, 1955 At the upper portion of Figure 1 may be seen twotabs 25 and 26 (also shown in Figure 2), and these are secured as by cementing to theplastic backing 20 at 25 and 26 of the diaper; they, themselves, are formed of moisture-proof material and are coated on their inside surfaces with a unified adhesive 31 and are normally, that is, before use, folded upon themselves as at 30 (Figure 1) and provided withpull tabs 32 and 33.
The sectional view of Figure 3 illustrates a reinforcingpad 35 of absorbent material which is preferably preformed and inserted between layers of the cotton or tissue. This is, of course, intended to provide additional absorbent capacity for the crotch area. About the extremity ofpad 35, the surface ofelement 10 is slit, at 36, except at thecorners 37 thereof.
The use or application of the diaper will be readily apparent and will be but briefly described.
The portion 11 of the diaper is placed under an infants buttocks with the absorbent material inward, lower flap 13 is pulled up between the legs to the abdomen, whereupontabs 32 and 33 are pulled, exposing the adhesive 31 (see Figure 1). The members 15 and 16 (serving as portions of the waisband of the garment) are extended so as to pass beneath the portion 11 thereof and in alignment withtabs 25 and 26.Tab 25 is thereupon pressed into contact withtab 15 and 26 into contact withtab 16, thus insuring that the adhesive 31 does not contact the skin of the infant.
When the diaper is removed, theportion 35, normally held in place only at itscorners 37, can easily be detached and flushed away or otherwise disposed of.
The foregoing is in specific terms, and many modification will readily suggest themselves. For the true scope of the invention, therefore, reference should be had to the appended claim.
I claim:
A garment of the nature described comprising a unitary structure having an outer moisture-proof surface, an inner absorbent surface, and having an upper portion and a lower portion said upper portion being provided with oppositely extending adhesive tabs and the lower portion being provided with oppositely disposed extending portions cooperating in use with said adhesive tabs to form a waistband for said garment, and a reinforcing absorbent pad secured within the confines of the said absorbent surface the said surface being intermittently slit in substantial conformation with said pad.
