I MW N. m: Hills Pllulo-Lfllwgmphur. WlslunglDIL 11c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ROUNDS, OF CHESTER, VERMONT.
CRAYON AND ERASER HQLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 269,468, dated December 19, 1882,
' Application filed March 28, 1882. (Model) i To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RoUNDs, of Chester, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in a Chalk, Crayon, and Eraser Holder Combined, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive crayon and eraser holder com bined which may be used to advantage in all kinds of blackboard work; and it consists in tonstructing from onestrip ofthin elastic metal, of suitable length and width, the body or main part of crayon-holder, and in sucha way as at the same time to form at one end thereof a loop which serves as a clamp to receive and hold the eraser, which may be made of cotton, cotton or wool flannel, or other suitable material, and inserted therein preparatory to adjusting the holder for the reception of the crayon.
My combined holder is composed of two pieces-to wit, the body or main part thereof and a metallic ring or band-as shown by the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a View of my improved'holder with its clamping-band-removed and in readiness to receive the eraser. Fig. 2 is a view of the same with the eraser inserted, and represents the holder in readiness to receive the crayon; and Fi .,3 is aview of the holder with the eraser and crayon inserted ready for use.
The holder may be made of any suitable material, preferably of thin elastic metal, such as tin. e The body is preferably made from a single piece of material, cut in proper form, shapedand bent, as shown, to form the arms or jaws A A and the curved portion B, which unites thejaws and forms a clamp or holder for the eraser D. The jaws are concaved and slightly corrugated at the. open end, to adapt them to the shape of crayon, and both the jaws and l the eraser-holdin gelain p are closed and secured by the clamping-band C.
D is the eraser, made of cotton, cotton or woolen flannel, or any other suitable material, and inserted in the clamp B, as shown.
E is the crayon, inserted between the springjaws A A, in which position it is adjustably secured by the clamping-band C, the adjustment .ot' the crayon being readily ett'ected by moving band 0 toward the eraser until the jaws A A open enough to release the crayon, which is then projected to expose the desired length, or retracted to entirely cover the crayon, and the jaws'secured by returning the clamping-band.
1 do not limit myself to the construction of the body of the holder of metal or in a single piece, as it may be made in several pieces, and from any suitable material; nor do llimit myself to the use of a metallic clamping-band.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A combined crayon and eraser holder, consisting of crayon-holding arms or jaws and a clamp for holding the eraser, said jaws and clamp being closed by a single clam ping-band.
2. A combined crayon and eraser holder, consisting of crayon-holding'jaws united by a curved portion, forming a clamp or holder for the eraser, and a clamping-band that secures both the crayon and eraser holders, substantially as set forth. I
3. In a combined crayon and eraser holder, the concaved spring-jaws A A, curved portion B, uniting said jaws and forming aclamp or holder for the eraser D, and the clamping WILLIAM ROUNDS.
Witnesses CHARLES F. BARRETT, LYDIA. E. BARRETT.
Having thus described my invention, what Y band C, substantially as described and shown.
