The present invention relates to improvements in sporting goods and, more specifically, to a new and improved device for facilitating the holding and gripping of a golf club in a correct manner.

It is a well known that correctly holding a sport device is the first requisite for playing a sport well, and most people do not play any sport well because they dont know how to grip and hold the club, racket, bat or the like correctly.

Therefore, one object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is permanently provided on, or which can be attached easily to that portion of a golf club or of a similar sport device which is normally engaged by the hands of a person using the sport device and provided with means for indicating the position of the fingers for correctly holding the sport device.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described whose means for indicating the gripping position of the fingers consist of a design and of perforations through which a players thumbs can directly contact the sport device, and said means indicate preferably the grip and finger position of top golf players.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which can be attached easily and quickly to golf clubs or the like by pasting it thereon by means of adhesive or the like, and which is also of a pleasing outer appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, light in Weight, sturdy and durable.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

In the accompanying drawing the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

While my new and improved device, which I prefer to call a golf club grip, can be used for all kinds of sporting goods, the embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing and described hereinafter is specifically designed for use in connection with a golf club 2 (Figs. 1 and 2). The numeral Ii denotes a longitudinal sheet of thin tightly woven fabric material, leather, plastic material, or the like; and the numeral 5 denotes a piece of loosely woven material, such as cheese cloth or the like, which protrudes beyond thesheet 4. One side of the latter is provided with alayer 3 of adhesive, by means of which it is secured to thesheet 6. Thesheet 4 can be torn off thesheet 6. Thereupon the sheet Ll still has sufficient adhesive on one side for pasting it upon the handle portion of thegolf club 2 in such a manner that anarrow 3 shown thereon points toward the lower end of theclub 2 and is in alignment with the head center of thegolf club 2. The width of the sheet i is smaller than the circumference of the handle portion of the golf club, so that the sheet l will cover said handle portion only partially, allowing a portion of the players hand to touch directly the golf club. The position of the ends of the players thumbs are indicated on thesheet 4 preferably by perforations 80, so that the thumbs will contact directly the normally rough surface of the leather handle of the club. The correct position of the tips of the rest of the fingers is indicated on thesheet 4 by means of cutouts i2. This golf grip is a half of a grip fitting on the top of the club shaft. It will be obvious that there could be substituted designs only for the perforations if}, or perforations for the cutouts i2, but I prefer the arrangement shown in the drawing. As a further aid for gripping thegolf club 2 and for assuming the correct posture of the player, I prefer to indicate on the sheet l the Vs of each hand formed between the thumb and the index finger by the inverted V designs it. The points of said Vs must be directed toward the right shoulder of the player, which is accomplished automatically if theclub 2 is grasped in the manner indicated by this device. My new and improved golf club grip is of the greatest advantage to anyone who is a beginner in the art of playing golf or the like. It enables the player to hit the ball in such a manner that it will be projected straight. If it is intended to project the ball to the right or to the left, instead of straight, the hands are moved slightly to the left or to the 3 right respectively from the correct position indicated by the device.

Since certain changes may be made in the above articles and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A golf club grip device comprising a longitudinal sheet of closely woven fabric material whose width is smaller than the circumference of the handle portion of a golf club and one side of which is provided with a layer of adhesive constructed and arranged for securing the sheet to a section of the periphery of the handle portion of. the golf club, said sheet having a pair of parallel longitudinal edges as well as apair of parallel transverse upper and lower edges, and the upper transverse edge being adjacent the upper end of the golf club! when the sheet is attached tothe club, said sheet being provided with a pair of perforations each of which has an arcuate border portions spanned b astraight border portion, and the first one of said perforations being located intermediate the ends of said sheet and arranged in such a manner that its arcuate border portion is close to one of the longitudinal edges of said sheet while the second one of said perforations is located intermediate said first per foration and the lower transverse edge of the sheet and is substantially equally spaced from said longitudinal edges, a first marginal cutout having a plurality of semi-circular sections being provided on said sheet intermediate said first perforation and the upper edge of the sheet adjacent that longitudinal edge of the sheet which is close to the arcuate border portion of said first perforation, a second marginal cutout having a plurality of semicircular sections being provided on said sheet adjacent the other longitudinal edge thereof and located close to said second perforation, and an arrow design on said sheet intermediate and parallel to the longitudinal edges thereof and adjacent one of said transverse edges of the sheet for indicating the proper position of the sheet on the golf club, which proper position is attained if said arrow points toward the lower end of the club and is in alignment with the head center of the club, said perforations permitting a golf player to touch, through them, the golf club with his thumbs, and said cutouts on said sheet indicating the position of the rest of the fingers of said person gripping the golf club.
