SURGICAL TOURNIQUET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,407, dated December 5, 1882.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Surgical Instrument or Appliance called an Elasticlourniquet.

My invention relates to improvements in surgical instruments or appliances used for binding and compressing the various members of the human body to prevent hemorrhage; and the object of my improvements is to provide an instrument which can be readily applied, in cases of accident and during surgical operations, to either the large or small members of the body to cut oft'the flow ofblood and and arrest hemorrhage.

I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 shows the tourniquet in position; Fig. 2, the tubing passed into the block; Fig. 3, the block.

To accomplish the purpose which my invention is to effect, and to useand apply the same, I place the block A at a convenient point on the limb or member of the body injured or to be amputated, and then wind the rubber tubing B about and around the limb or member suflicieutly tight or close to prevent and out off the circulation of the blood; and then force the rubber tubing into the slots or grooves D D, which are made of proper size to hold and retain the same when-forced therein.

The instrument or appliance consists of a block, A, made of hard wood or other suitable material, and having a small central perforation through which the rubber tubing B is placed, so that the ends of the same project equidistant from the block A. The slots or grooves D D are cut in the block A along the top of the same and'parallel with the perforation 0, and are sufficiently narrow at the top to make it necessary to force the rubber tubing into them, and they increase in size in circular form to allow the tubing to expand though compressing it enough to hold it firmly and prevent it from slipping.

A tourniquet composed of a rubber tube or cord, in combination with a block having a single central perforation, and grooves upon the surface for receiving and retaining said tube or cord when forced therein.
