STOVE-PIPE SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,072, dated November 28, 1882,

To all whom it may-concern:

Be it known that 1, J AMES MADISON BLACK,

of Lake View,in the county of (look and State of-Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Shelves, of which the follo wing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the improvement, in which- Figure I is a horizontal section of a stovepipe with my improved shelf attached; Fig. II, a broken elevation of the pipe with the double shelf attached; Fig. III, a perspective view of one of the band attachments removed from the other parts; Fig. IV, an enlarged broken elevation of the connecting portions of the shelf and band attachment; Fig. V, an enlarged top view of one of the shelf-ears an band attachment.

The nature of the present invention consists, first, in a shelf formed with a semicircular bearing to fit the pipe, and provided with upwardly-projectingears, which have hooks cast thereon for the attachment of a band passing round the opposite side of the pipe from the shelf, at such a height above the shelf that there will be such leverage as to hold the shelf in a fixed position; second, in the combination of this shelf with a shelf which is provided with ears of such length as to bring the bail or band" above the band of the other shelf, so that the two half-shelves placed on opposite sides of the pipe shall be of the same height, and be respectively supported by bands bearin g against opposite sides of the pipe, as the Whole is hereinafter fully described and shown.

A A represent a single or half shelf of any desired form, A being that portion which is semicircular to bear against the stove-pipe F.

Projecting up from this shelf are cars E, which are provided with hooks D to engage the band B by passing through slots 0 C, Fig. III. In the "iew at Fig.1 but a half or single shelf is shown; but at Fig. II the long and short cared shelves are in position to form a continuous shelf, the ear E being long enough to bring one band above the other, and the shelves level, or at the same height.

Fig. IV shows a full sized ear for asix to an eight inch pipe, and this heightofthe car from the shelf to the band is important, for if the band be too high the shelf will slide down on the pipe, and if too low the shelf will tip down, because leverage isrelied on to support the shelf, and experiments show it to be stiflicient where the ears are of the proper height and the bands are attached as shown. The shelf and shelf-ears and hooks are cast in one piece, so that no tool-work is required, except to cut and punch the bandsB.

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A stove-pipe single shelf consisting of the shelf A A, ears E, and hooks 1), combined with a band, B, attached to the hooks, and at such height, substantially as shown, above the shelfas to hold the shelf in position on the stove-pipe F by leverage, as specified.

2. The two half-shelves, respectively provided with short and long ears E E, and COlllbined with bands B, bearing against opposite sides of the pipe F, and placed one above the other, so as to form a continuous level shelf, as and for the purpose stated.
