Description

J. P. DOMAN Sept. 18, 1951 DOOR HINGE Filed March 5, 1944 F/G, L?
Z X i w i: Q
Patented Sept. 18,. 1951 UNITED grmm PATENT OFFICE} John Doman, Los Angeles, Calif., assignor to 7 Victor B. Doman, Los Angeles, Calif.
Applicationlvlarch' s, 1944, Serial No. 524,872
This invention relates to hinges and more especially to hinges employed indoors and the like.
An object of the invention isto provide a simple, practical and inexpensive hinge of the character described.
Another object is to provide an improved door type hinge having concealed spring means and concealed means for resisting closing movement of the door.
A further object is to provide in a hinge of the character described improved adjustable means for resisting closing movement of the door adapted also to hold the door in one of several open positions and to provide stop means for the same.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevation View of a hinge embodying my invention showing same applied to a door in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the door in open position, and
Fig- 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing a modification.
Referring more particularly to the drawing I show a hinge having butts l and H, respectively secured within suitable recesses in a jamb l2 and door I3 as by screws l4, suitable screw holes l being provided in the butts therefor. Butt I0 is provided with a pair of bearing portions I6 and butt II is provided with a plurality of bearing portions l! interfitting therewith and rotatable with respect thereto by means of bearingpin 18 which interconnects the same. Butt It] has an aperture I9 and butt I i has an.aperture 20 within which are secured respectivelytubular members 2| and 22. Acomposite spring 23 is disposed withintubular members 2! and 22 and comprises anelongated coil 24 within which is asmaller coil 25,coils 24 and 25 being wound righthanded and lefthanded respectively, by which construction and arrangement a composite spring is provided which is flexible and which will have a uniform bending portion which will not be localized at a point which would otherwise result in an early breaking of the spring in use.Tubular member 22 is provided withapertures 26 in the wall portion thereof in which is positioned apin 21 which passes through and 1 Claim. (0]. 16-180) 2 engagescoils 24 and 25 by which the end portion of thespring 23 is secured withintubular member 22, it being clear that the opposite end portion ofspring 23 is slidable in tubular member 2 I.
The door movement resisting means of my invention will now be described. One of the bearing portions l6 of butt I!) is provided with a plurality oflongitudinal grooves 28, and a pair ofstrap spring members 29 and 30 are secured to butt II by a bolt 3| having acountersunk head 32 and alock nut 33 so arranged that the tension ofsprings 29 and 30 may be increased or decreased by a screw driver applied tohead 32 which is accessible when the door is in open position.Springs 29 and 30are arcuately shaped as shown, andspring 29 has alip portion 34 for frictional engagement ingrooves 28 of bearing portion l6. If desired, I may provide on bearing IS astop member 35 to limit the open movement of the door.
The operation of the invention should be clear from the foregoing description. The fiexure ofcomposite spring 23 is such that when the door is swung to the open position shown in Fig. 4 the spring reaction will swing the door back to closed position, the free end of the spring sliding intubular member 2!. The engagement oflip 34 ofspring 29 with thegrooves 28 is such as to resist this turning movement of the door, and the adjustment of the frictional engagement ofspring 29 may be such, if desired, as to retain the door in any position whereinlip 34 is engaged with one of thegrooves 28.Abutment 35 is such as to permit the end ofspring 29 to engage therewith and limit the movement of the door in the open position.
It will be understood that the features of my invention may be employed in a hinge structure independently of each other. For instance, I may provide a hinge employing the means for resisting closing movement of the door, or I may provide a hinge having only the spring closing means without the means to resist the closing movement. Also I may provide other means of resisting closing movement of the door or to hold the same in open position.
In Fig. 5 I show a modified form of means for holding the door in open position. In this figure I show a hinge having butts Ill and H, butt Hl having a tubular member 2la similar totubular member 2|, however having a plurality of internal beads MD in the bore thereof. A spring 23a similar tospring 23 is slidable inmember 2| but having however a somewhat shorter length so that when the door is in open position as shown in Fig. 5 the end of spring 23a is spaced from the end 40 ofmember 21a. A resilient U-shapedmember 36 is secured as by ascrew 31 to the end of spring 23a and has a plurality ofgrooves 38 in the arm portions thereof which engage beads 21b and hold the spring from sliding inmember 21a and closing the door by its normal tendency to straighten itself out which is the normal closing procedure.Member 36 hasabutments 39 which engage the end 40 of member Zla and serve as an opening stop for the door.
While I have shown my invention applied to a door and jamb, it will be understood that the invention may be applied to any type of door or hinged window such as French type doors, easements, transoms, gates, and the like.
Having described my invention what I claim is: V
In a hinge for a door as described, a pair of butts having interfitting bearing portions and a bearing pin, a resilient element extending through apertures in said butts to cause closing movement of the door, each said butt having a tubular housing portion for a portion of said resilient element, said resilient element being secured to one of said housing portions and freely slidable in the other of said tubular housing portions, said element comprising a coiled spring having a second coiled spring therewithin, the coil windings of said springs being oppositely directed.
