Description

7, 1951 P. HAIMS 2,563,407
ROCKER TOY Filed April 15, 1946 WE W FYML/QMQ ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 7, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My present invention pertains to the art of rocker toys for children, and a special object of the invention has been to devise such a toy or toys, in modified construction, which are made with the utmost simplicity from the viewpoint of manufacture, and which may correspondingly be sold for less than the conventional type of rocker or rocking horse toys at present commonly available at the usual sources of such toys.
Still another object of my invention has been to produce a toy of the type referred to, which is preferably made up of sheet metal for the rocker member or body of the toy, with associated handle means that may be in the form of bent tubing or bar construction, united to the sheet metal rocker body, or said body may be extended in such a manner as to provide a handle member as a part thereof.
Still another object of my invention has been to devise a toy of the above mentioned nature, equipped with stabilizing base members to prevent over-rocking movement of the rocker body or member such as would be likely to cause a child to be thrown from the rocker toy in the operation of the latter under practical conditions of use.
Still another object of my invention has been to produce a rocker toy utilizing a seat construction that may be formed directly from the sheet I or fiat metal rocker.
The advantages of my toy construction in the several forms thereof which I hereinafter describe in detail, will be fully comprehended upon reference to the following specification of various constructions, in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the toy shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a toy somewhat similar in form to the construction of Figures 1 and 2 with the handle means an integral part of the rocker body or member, and said body member formed with an extension providing a seat.
In the construction of my invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, there is provided here a, simplecurved rocker member 8, the same equipped with asuitable handle unit 9 at its front end, as generally previously described, and therocker member 8 having a base stabilizing and actuating spring plate In applied to its underside at the middle portion thereof. This plate In is a single relatively wide p.ate, not quite as wide as therocker member 8 itself, but sufliciently wide to provide stability. The plate I is secured to therocker member 8 by fastenings or by weld portions shown at I I.
In Figure 3 I have shown a seat type rocker toy in which the rocker member or body I2 is curved -upwardly and rearwardly to provide the handle unit I3, and the handle means is supplied by slotting the unit I3 as shown at I4 to provide a gripping bar I5. The rear end portion of the rocker member I2 is also curved upwardly and bent forwardly as shown at I6 in order to provide a seat. The forwardly extending portion I6 is bent downwardly to provide a supporting member I! for said seat, and is attached by welding or other means at the lower end flange I8 to the upper surface of the rocker member I2 intermediate the front and rear ends thereof. In this construction of Figure 3 I also utilize stabilizing plate means shown at I9 comprising two plates of resilient form welded or otherwise attached underneath the body or rocker member I2 of the toy. The rocker member I2. is therefore supported upon the plates I9 during the rocking back and forth of the toy.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have supplied two iorms of my invention, which are very simple constructions of rocker toys that can be produced very cheaply from the viewpoint of manufacture, and may be sold at very reasonable prlces to meet the requirements of purchasers desiring efiicient but low cost rocker toys.
It will be apparent that an important feature of the rocking toy constructions of my invention is that they are designed to enable the child to enter the rocking toy from the level of the surface upon which the toy rests. This renders the toys safe for use by small children since there is less likelihood of the child injuring himself by the necessity of climbing into the toy in a manner to overbalance the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A rocker toy of the class described, comprising a rocker base member consisting of a transversely broad curved rocker plate the bottom of which forms a broad supporting rocker surface, and a handle unit applied to the front portion of said plate and extending upwardly therefrom, sald unit comprising a member extending forwardly, upwardly, and rearwardly from the front extremity of the base member, combined with a normally resilient stabilizing plate member attached to the rocxer memoer at its bottom portion, said stabilizing plate member being normally straight and adapted to rest upon the surface supporting the rocker toy and attached to the bottom of the curved portion of the rocker plate so as to lie directly on the supporting surface.
2. A rocker toy of the class described, comprising a rocker base member consisting of a transversely broad curved rocker plate the bottom of which forms a broad supporting rocker surface, and a handle unit applied to the front portion of said plate and extending upwardly therefrom, said unit comprising a member extending forwardly, upwardly, and rearwardly from the front extremity of the base member, combined with a stabilizing plate of resilient metal attached to the under side of the rocker member and projecting rearwardly from the upwardly curving rear portion of the latter, said stabilizing plate being flat and straight.
3. A rocking toy comprising a curved rocking member, the front and rear ends of which curve upwardly and the ,rear end of which is bent forwardly and downwardly to provide a seat, the front curved portion of the rocking member being equipped with handle means, said handle means being formed by bending the front end portion of the rocker member rearwardly and providing a slot to make a handle bar adjacent the seat.
