Description

May i5, 195K B. H. VAN MEGROOT FINGER TIP SHAPER Filed-May s, 1949 4 .IN1/5mm.
Patented May 15, 1951 piilleil),A s-TAT FINGER-TIP SHAPER Barbara H. Van Megroot, Waterbury, Conn.
Application May `6, 1949, Serial No. 91,720
(Cl. 12S-77) 1 Claim.
This invention relates to beauty aids, and more particularly to a nger clip having spring-pressed pivoted sections for compressing and shaping the finger tips, and curving the linger-nails.
One object of this invention is to provide a device of the above nature which will not prevent the use of the lingers while the clip is being worn thereon.
Another object is to provide a device of the above nature which may be worn at intervals over a period of time so as to impart a desirable tapered shape to the fingertips and nails.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to apply and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved finger clip'.
Fig. 2 is a front end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the linger clip as it would appear in use.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral I indicates the improved finger clip which comprises a pair of pivoted sections II, I2, having respective upstanding arms I3, I4', and jaw p0rtions I5, I6, which extend rearwardly from said arms toward the palm of the users hand and embrace the rst joint of the nger.
In order to hinge the pair of sections Il, I2 together, the edges of the arm I4 are provided with a pair of inturned apertured ears Il which overlap a corresponding pair of apertured ears I8 on the arm I3--a headed pivot pin I9 being secured in an inclined position in said ears (see Fig. 1).,
In order to urge the jaw portions I5, I6 toward each other, the pivot pin I9 is embraced by acoil spring 20 located between the apertured ears I8, said spring having upwardly extendingend portions 2I, 22, which press the upper portions of the arms I3, I4 in an outward direction.
The upper ends of the arms I3, I4, preferably have integral upwardly-extendingears 23, 23, 24, 24, respectively, which are adapted to be manually pressed together against the force of the 2spring 20 whenever it is desired to open the jaw portions I5, I6.
In order to adapt the jaw portions I5, I6 to shape the finger in the desired manner, said jaw portions are made concave in shape and slightly divergent in an upward direction. It has been found in practice that a radius of one-half inch for the concavity of the jaw portions I5, I6 will provide satisfactory operation, while said jaw portions should preferably be approximately one inch in length.
The action of the jaw portions I5, I6 may be cushioned by providinglinings 25, 26 of any suitable material, such as felt, which have slightly smaller dimensions than the inner surfaces of said jaw portions, and may be secured thereto by any suitable adhesive.
The end portions of the jaw portions I5, I6 are preferably curved inwardly as shown at 21, 28, 29, and 30 (Fig. 3), thus avoiding sharp edges which would be uncomfortable to adjacent lingers, and which would interfere with the use of the hand while the clip II) is being worn thereon.
Operation,
In operation, the clip I Il will be applied in such a position upon a finger F that the upstanding arms I3, I4 will be disposed above and closely adjacent the inner end of a linger nail N. In use, the action of thespring 20 will result in a relatively strong compressive force being applied to the sides of the nail N by the upper and forward portions of the jaw portions I5, I5, while the other parts of said jaw portions which are more remote from the pivot pin I9 will exert a somewhat smaller compressive force against the sides of the nger F.
Further, the clip sections II, I2 have a degree of resilience, so that the upper ends of the jaw portions I5, I6 may deflect outwardly over the linger joint and thus assume a slightly divergent position so as to mold the linger tip into a tapered shape.
While there has been disclosed in this specilication one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the sp-ecic disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention,
what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
In a nger clip, a pair of opposed concave jaw portions having free lower edges, a pair of upstanding arms integral with said respective jaw portions adjacent the forward ends thereof, said arms being pivotally connected for relative swinging movement of said jaw portions about an axis spaced above said jaw portions and located in a plane intermediate said jaw portions, and a spring engaged between said arms'and urging said jaw portions together for molding a fingertip therebetween.
