2 Claims.

This invention relates toseparable fasteners for garters or other articles.

An object of the invention is the provision of a separable fastener in which one of the elements of the fastener is in the form of a headed shank adapted to be received by a bayonet slot in the other element with means for preventing the headed shank from becoming disengaged from the slot.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a separable fastener in which one element of the fastener is in the form of a button having a shank adapted to be received by a bayonet slot of the other element of the fastener with a pivoted catch engaging the shank below the button for preventing disengagement of the button from the bayonet slot.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a separable fastener in which one ele-v ment of the fastener is in the form of a shank provided with a button adapted to be received by a keyhole slot in the second element of the fastener, the button being prevented from disengagement from the slot by a. spring-pressed catch normally disposed beneath portion of the slot, said catch being moved manually away from the button to permit release of the same, the shank being secured to one portion of the garment, while the other element is attached to another portion of said garment.

The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in perspective of the garter showing a catch released to permit disengagement of the elements of the separable fastener.

Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view of one element of the separable fastener.

Figure 4 is a view in elevation of the element of the fastener illustrated in Figure 3 showing the inside of said element.

Figure 5 is an enlarged plan view of a plate forming one of the members of the element shown in Figures 3 and 4, and

Figure 6 is an enlarged plan view of a second plate forming another member of the element of the fastener illustrated in Figures 3 and 4.

Referring more particularly to the drawing A represents one element of a separable fastener 2 secured to one portion :0 of an article of wearing apparel, which is illustrated as a garter. The second elementof the fastener generall designated by". the letter B is attached to a second-portion of the article which in this instance is shown as a loop H at one end of an elastic band l2. The other end of the band is attached at I? to theportion ortab l8. A second separable fasthe button for-retaining the shank in the narrow aline with the perforations 26in the tener M- is employed foriattachmenttothe upperendofasock.-

The element A of the fastener-is of awell known typein which a shank l5 rises from a base it having a loop ll attached by threads to the portion 19 of the garter. A button or enlarged head I8 is formed at the free end' of said 7 shank.

The element B of said fastener consists principally of twoplates 25 and 2|. The plate 'ZU-has an elongatednarrow slot 22 adapted to receive the loop ll of the elastic band I2. A bayonet or key-hole slot 23 has its wider portion 24'opening into theslot 22 while the narrow portion 2511f theslot 23 opens into the wider portion 24. The plate, so far described, is standard construction and the head of the element A is inserted through thewider portion 25 of the slot '23 so that the shank l5 may be moved within thenarrow portion 25, of theslot 23 for connecting together the elements of the separable fastener and the two portions lo and H of the garter. The plate 28 is provided with twoperforations 26 for a purpose which will be presently described.

The plate 2| has an elongated slot as adapted to aline with theslot 22 of theplate 20 for the reception of the loop II. This plate is further provided with two perforations 3| adapted toplate 20. A lip or catch 32 projects from the plate Zloutwardly from the slot 3!! and substantially covers the wider portion 24 of the key-hole slot when theplates 20 and 2! are alined as shown in Figure 3. 7

A U-shaped wire 3 the alined perforations in theplates 20 and 2|. Thefree ends 35 of the legs are bent at an angle and lie in flat contact with the outside face of the plate 2|. The wire 33 together with thelegs 34 form a hinge for the plates 2! and 20 so that the free ends of the plates may be swung outwardly from each other or towards each other.

A U-shapcd spring wire 4%! (Figures 3 and 41" has its legs 4| bent around thelegs 34 of the U-shaped hinging member 33 as shown at 42. One leg 4% of the spring wire presses against the inner face of the plate 28 while the other le 3 has itslegs 34 received by v presses against the inner face of the plate 2| for retaining the free ends of the plates outwardly of each other and thecatch 32 covering the wide portion 24 of the key-hole orbayonet slot 23 to prevent the head [8 and the shank I5 from becoming disengaged from said slot by retaining the shank in thenarrow portion 25 of theslot 23 which is formed in a narrow projection 43 on theplate 20.

Before attempting to connect the members A and B of the separable fastener, it will be necessary to press the free ends of theplates 20 and 2! together. This action will cause the lip orcatch 32 to be elevated above the wider portion 24 f theslot 23 so that the head or button l8 may be inserted through the portion 24 of thebayonet slot 23 and the shank I is then moved into thenarrow portion 25 of the slot.

The free ends of theplates 20 and 2| are released and the spring legs 4! of the member as will force the free ends of said plates apart causing thelip 32 to rest over the portion 24 of theslot 23 thereby preventing movement of the shank to the wide portion of the slot. In these positions of the parts, it will be impossible to dislodge the member A from the member B of the separable fastener.

While I have shown and describeda preferred construction of the fastener, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own all such modifications in construction as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim:

1. A safety catch for a fastener including a headed shank, a plate having a. bayonet slot at one end to receive the shank, means preventing disengagement of the shank from the bayonet slot comprising a second plate having one end covering the wider portion of the slot, said plates having aligned spaced perforations, a U-shaped member having legs thereof inserted through the perforations, the free ends of the legs bent back against one of the plates and a U-shaped spring member between the plates having the legs thereof bent around the adjacently disposed legs of the first U-shaped member, the free end of one leg of the spring member pressing against the inner face of one plate, the free end of the other leg pressing against the inner face of the other plate for retaining the outer ends of the plates outwardly of each other and the first mentioned end of the second plate over the wider portion of the slot.

2. A safety catch for a fastener having a headed shank, plate having a bayonet slot at one end to receive the headed shank, means preventing disengagement of the headed shank from the slot comprising a second plate, said plates having alined perforations inwardly from one end, said end of the second plate covering the wider portion of the slot, a U-shaped member having the legs thereof received by the perforations for hingedly connecting the plates together, the free ends of the legs being bent over the back of one of the plates, and a spring member connected to the U-shaped member forcing the other ends of the plates outwardly from each other for normally retaining the first mentioned end of the second plate over the wider portion of the slot, the second mentioned ends of the plates being manually movable towards each other for raising the first mentioned end of the second plate from the slot to release the shank.
