Description

Sept. 5, 1950 E. c. KINNEY 2,521,296
BINDER Filed April 19, 1949 Patented Sept. 5, 1950 "UNITED STATES 2,521,296 BINDER Edward c; Kinney, oliiycagip, f1.1. Application' April 19, 1949,`seria1N. 88,253
` This invention relates to a vremovablebinder forholding loose sheets.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a binder to be quickly and easily applied to loose sheets to hold them together, and which may be as quickly and easily released therefrom; to supply a holding means from which lower sheets may be pulled without disturbing the other sheets; to create a binder formed of cardboard and operated by rubber bands; to present a holder which will firmly hold sheets inserted therein and which does not change or otherwise affect the sheets.
My invention also contemplates such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawf ings a preferred embodiment of my invention-yet it is understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a blank and showing in part the addition of the fillers; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is an edge view showing the end portion folded over to provide with the ller the reinforced portions and Fig. 4 is a face view of the same; Fig. 5 is a face View of my binder showing the notches; Fig. .6 is an enlarged view of the binder ready for the addition of the resilient loops; Fig. 'l is a side elevational view of my device with the pad in place; Fig. 8 is a detailed View on line 8-8 of Fig. 'l and Fig. 9 is an end view of my binder.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a blank I preferably formed of cardboard with a glazed outer surface. My blank IB is rectangular in shape with an upper edge II and a lower edge I2. A horizontal score I3 extends acrossblank I0 at a, point downwardly from upper edge II forming upper end portion I4 and a corresponding horizontal score I5 extends across blank Ill at a point upwardly an equal distance from lower edge I2 forming lower end portion I6.
Downwardly spaced from score I3 an equal distance is horizontal score I'I, forming adjacent portion I8, and correspondingly upwardly spaced from score I is horizontal score I9 formingadjacent portion 20. A ller 2| coextensive in size with adjacent portion I8 and preferably of cardboard is attached by a suitable adhesive to adjacent portion I8. Afiller 22, coextensive in size with adjacent'portion 2Il and preferably of card- 2 claims. (ci. zal-256) L board is attached by a suitable adhesive. `to ,ad-f
jacent portion 20. y
Upper end portion I4 is then bent inwardly on score I3 and its inner surface attached by a suitable adhesive to the outer surface of ller 2I to form upper reinforcedportion 23. Lower end portion I6 is also bent inwardly on score I5 and its inner surface attached by a suitable adhesive to the outer surface offiller 22, to form lower reinforcedportion 24.
Downwardly spaced from score I 'I an equal distance ishorizontal score 25 forming upperintermediate portion 26 and correspondingly upwardly spaced from score I9 is horizontal score 2l forming lowerintermediate portion 28. Betweenhorizontal scores 25 and 21 is smallercentral portion 29.
Upper and lower reinforcedportions 23 and 2,4 are respectively bent inwardly on scores Il and I9, and upper and lowerintermediate portions 26 and 28 are respectively bent inwardly onscores 25 and 21.
Extending horizontally inwardly from each of the outer edges of upper and lower reinforcedmembers 23 andA 24 are vertically spacedslots 30 and 3l.
Aresilient loop member 32, preferably a rubber band, is positioned to extend betweenopposite slots 30 of reinforcedportions 23 and 24, and anotherresilient loop member 33, preferably a rubber band, is positioned to extend betweenopposite slots 3| of reinforcedportions 23 and 24.
The smooth surfaces of reinforcedportions 23 and 24 are adapted to receive between them inserted upper ends of a plurality of sheets. The bands -32 and 33 are adapted to stretch to permit the reinforced portions to be moved away from each other for the insertion of the sheets and then to contract to move the reinforced portions together again for holding the sheets in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A readily attachable and releasable binder for loose sheets comprising a pair of opposite reinforced end portions, a pair of spaced intermediate portions adjacent said end portions, and a central portion between said intermediate portions, scores separating said `intermediate portions from said end portions and from said central portion, the outer edges of each of said end portions having a pair of spaced slots, said end portions bent inwardly on the scores between them and said intermediate portions, said intermediate portions bent inwardly on the scores between them and said central portion, so that said 3 end portions are opposite each other, and a pair of rubber bands extending around said end portions and positioned within said slots and contacting the outer surfaces of said end portions to move said opposite end portions into contact, said intermediate portions covering said rubber bands, said bands adapted to be stretched to permit said end portions to part to receive the ends of a plurality of loose sheets therebetween and to coi'fitret to nuove said end potns t-l gether to noie the inserted sheets.
2. A loose leaf binder comprising a central por.- tion, a pair of opposite spaced integral interme'- diate portions bent inwardly from said central portion, a pair of opposite spaced integral end portions bent inwardly from the inner 'erid's 'of said intermediate portions, and having cut outs on their outer edges, a resilient loop member ex? tending around the outer surfaces of said 'end portions and positioned within said cut outs to move Isaid end portions into eoiita'ct, said nter# mediate portions covering said loop member, said loop member adapted to be stretched to permit said end portions to be parted to receive the ends of a plurality of loose sheets therebetween, and to contract to move said end portions together to hold the inserted sheets.
EDWARD C. KINNEY.
