WALTER' JONES,
*aw MSM atented ug. 15, 1950 2,519,316 ORNAMENTAL BUTTON ASSEMBLY Walter I. Jones, Belm United-Carr Fastener Mass., a corporation o ont, Mass., assignor to Corporation, Cambridge, f Massachusetts Application December 6, 1946, Serial No. 714,413
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to ornamental button assemblies, such as those employed in wearing apparel, and aims to provide simplified means for attaching the button or ornamental part to a supporting material. The word buttons is given a broad scope so as to include button parts of snap fasteners.
More particularly, my novel means and manner mental or like button to an attaching plate, which may, if desired, be one of the parts of cooperating stud and socket snap fastening members.
The above and other objects of the invention will be apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the accompanying drawings and annexed specification illustrating and describing preferred embodiments.
In the drawings invention relates to a of attaching an orna- Fig. l is a plan view of one form of ornamental` fastener assembly as shown applied to a fragmentary portion of a supporting member such as an article of Wearing apparel; ,Y
Fig. 2 is a side view of the ornamental fastener shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attaching plate;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of an ornamental stud fastener member embodying the invention;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional View of an ornamental socket fastener member embodying the invention;
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the button attaching plate shown in Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view of another form of ornamental socket fastener member embodying the invention.
The invention provides simple and novel means for attaching an ornamental button and the like to a piece of supporting material, either as a purely decorative feature or as a decorative attachment of a stud and socket snap fastener. The ornamental part of the button I may be of any desired shape and configuration having a substantiallyplane surface 2 and a convexedouter surface 3. It may be formed of any desired material, such as metal, bone, pearl, synthetic plastic or the like, and for purposes of illustration may be of ring-like or annulus form providing acentral aperture 4, thesurface 3 being convexed between the outer and inner peripheral walls.
The ornamental part or button I may be a decorative ornament secured to a piece of supportingmaterial 5, which may be an article of Wearing apparel, for example, a glove, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5. According to this form ofthe invention, the part I may be secured to the supportingmaterial 5 with theplane surface 2 yin contact with thematerial 5, by means of a single attaching plate I0 disposed on the opposite side of the material and formed with material-penetrating and article-gripping prongs II. The attaching plate I0 is conveniently in the form of a ring of sheet material, for example, metal or sheet synthetic plastic. The prongs I I preferably taper toward pointed ends I2 capable of smoothly penetrating the material of thesupport 5 and of being bent into engagement with and overlying a portion of theconvexed surface 3 of the ornamental part I. It will be understood that the material of the attaching plate I!) will have sufficient stiffness to permit the prongs to retain their deformed shape in which the effective diameter and the pointed ends I2 are substantially different from the diameter of that edge ofplane surface 2 engaged by the prongs Il to secure the part I thereto. Preferably, the prongs II are formed of` and extend from the inner peripheral edge of the attaching plate I0 and are bent over theconvexed surface 3 of the part I adjacent theopening 4 thereof. With this arrangement, when ve prongs are employed, they produce a star-shaped effect within the margins of the ornamental button as indicated in Fig. 1.
The ornamental part I and the novel attaching means therefor, as above described, may be embodied in the cooperating stud and socket parts of a snap fastener as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In Fig. 5 the attaching plate II)aL is similar to that shown in Fig. 4 but is provided with an annular skirt or flange I5 extending from the outer peripheral edge of the base as shown in Fig. 7. This skirt or flange I5 is adapted to be turned over a disc I6 forming the base of stud member which is provided with a bulbous head I1 adapted for snap fastener locking engagement with a suitable socket device. By reason of the skirt I5, the plate IIJa and base I6 may be securely connected together to form a unitarir part having a snap fastener stud I'I on one face thereof, and ornament-attaching prongs IIa extending from an opposite face thereof.
Similarly, as shown in Fig. 6, the ornament I may be secured to the supportingfabric 5 by means of a pronged attaching plate IEL as disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4, and asnap fastener socket 3 member 20 may be attached to the plate I0a by means of a skirt I5 extending from the plate I9a as above described and as shown in Fig. '7.
The socket member 20 preferably comprises a central open-ended stud-receivingbarrel 2| which may be slotted as at 22 from its outer end to near itsbase 23 to provide resilience for snap fastener engagement with a stud, forexample, such as the stud I1, Fig. 5. Thebase 23 merges into an outwardlyinclined ange 24 surrounding the barrel 2 I, the peripheral portion of the ilange being reversely bent to provide a retainer. ring- 25 having its free edge spaced from the adjacent surface of the inclined flange. socket member is Well known` t'o tener trade.
The socket member 20 may have,4 associated therewith, apart 26 presenting alateral ange 21 adapted for bearing engagement with and attached to the base plate of the attaching member I 02 Thepart 26 may' b'e' a partlike' the at caching member lo.' (Fig: 4),- the prongs 2l! of Whi'cli are curled' within' the. retainer'ringl 25'.` The? attaching' member for securing the" ornamental l? to the; supporting material 5T is the: snap faspreferably of the same form asslio'wn i'nlFi'gs.`
5andi7-'in`th'at the base flan/ge I Il'a isformedwith a? peripheral ilange' or skirt' I5 adapted to: be' turned 'livel'l th? flange' 2T t0 SeCllle the; pELIf'C-i' together.
Inl'i'g. 8'I have illustrated: an? alternative for-in of socket' fastener. member' embodied-l in a some what different' form of stud-receiving socket.
In thisv construction the socket part 2011 has` a;
studLrecei'vingf barrel 2Ia projecting outwardly from a plane baise' plate 22a disposed inl a plane normal tof the axis of' the' barrel 2iI'a. In such' form'l tll'el skirt I5` of the attaching member I8@ may directly' turned' over'th'e base 22a of the socketA part' 20a, thus simplifying tile constru'cL tlo'n.
From the above;` it willV bef seeni that the: in-Y vention pro'videsl anv attractive and? decorative* orna'mentalv fastener or buttonl assembly suitable for decorating` articles of wearing apparel.;- suchl as' gloves, hats;v sl'i'oes, belts' and the' like. The ornamentali part l may be* open or ring-like in.
This t'ype of form, in which case the central aperture is bridged by a section of supporting material. The only portion of the attaching means, viewed from the exposed side of the material on which the part I is positioned, is the pointed ends of the attaching prongs, which, when ve in number and bent over the inner convexed surface of the part I, produce anattractive'star design as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Although I have described my invention with particular reference to several specic embodiments ofthe invention, it is to be understood that it is not limited thereto, as the scope of the invention is' best deiined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A decorative button assembly for articles of Wearing apparel and'the like comprising a ringlike ornamental part having an outer peripheral edge,l an inner peripheral edge surrounding a central opening of said part, an outer surface betvs/een:V saldi edge's'- an'd arl'` innerf ilat surface' between s'aidf'edges; andff'astener means for attach ing said part'v directly' to a supporting material; comprisingia ring-like base element having outerandi inner peripheral'edges and a plurality of support-penetratingprongs' extending angularlyy to said base from the inner peripheral edge' thereof?, said base elementv underlying said. inner flat' sur-face of' said ring-like' part', said prongsextending within saldi central opening of saldi ring-like part andiengaging'over portions of said outer surface'of saidpart for clamping asupporting material between said base and said inner flat surface.
