Description

H. J. BENNETT cLoTgms HANGER Filed Nov. 10, 1947 Dec. 13, 1949 Harry J. Bennett Inventor Patented Dec. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES i ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes hangers and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a combination clothes hanger that will support both a mans trousers and coat or a womans skirt and coat.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a clothes hanger including a fixed cross member, a movable cross member and novel and improved means for selectively adjusting the cross members relative to each other for supporting a garment between the same.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a clothes hanger that is neat and attractive in appearance.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a clothes hanger that is simple and prac-- tical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the present clothes hanger;
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane ofsection line 2--2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the movable cross member and means carried thereby for connecting the same to the fixed cross member.
Referring noW to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral ll] represents the present hanger generally, comprising a pair of coplanar upwardly convergingarms 12 and [4 which are twisted together at theirupper terminals 16. The upper extremity of one of these arms, for example arm l2 extends upwardly to form a hook l8 coplanar with the axis of both the arms.
The lower free ends of the arm's l2 and 14 are turned downwardly to providevertical portions 20 that are fixedly secured by any suitable means intransverse sockets 22 provided adjacent the ends of a preferably rectangular fixedcross member 24.
Removably secured byfasteners 25 to therear face 26 of thecross member 24, at the longitudinal center thereof, is anupstanding brace 28 which is also preferably secured to the arms [2 and I4 adjacent their upper terminals l 6. v
The numeral 39 represents a substantially rectangular movable cross member that opposes and cooperates with the fixedcross member 24. Rigidly secured to theouter face 34 of themovable cross member 30, is abrace 36 that opposes thebrace 28. This brace 39 is provided with an internally threaded socket 313 on its inner face 49 that receivably engages thethread end 42 of a headedfastener 44 that is slidably mounted in a slot 49 provided inbrace 28 for selective clamping engagement of thecross members 24 and 30.
It is preferred, that the opposing inner faces of thecross members 24 and 39 be provided with pads or felt covering 48 which will furnish the desired resiliency and friction for supporting a pair of trousers or skirt, without wrinkling the same.
Obviously, the arms I2 and I4 will support a coat or the like in a convenient manner about the supported trousers or skirt so that a suit of clothes may be easily supported by a single hanger.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A clothes hanger comprising a pair of coplanar upwardly converging garment supporting arms connected at their upper ends, the upper end of one of said arms terminating in a hook, a fixed cross member connecting the lower ends of said arms, a brace carried by said fixed cross member, a movable cross member opposing said fixed cross member, a further brace carried by said movable cross member and spaced from said first brace, an internally threaded socket on the inner face of said further brace, an elongated slot provided in said first brace, and a headed fastener slidably received in said slot and including an externally threaded end portion receivably engaging said socket, the head of said fastener bearing against the first brace and disposed laterally of said slot, said slot being shaped to receive the head of said fastener to permit removal of the first brace from the fastener when the head is rotated to register with the slot.
