Description

23, 1948. G. RUSSO 2 ,454,718
LIPS'I'IOK HOLDIR l110d Jun. 6. 1945 521 INVENTOR. Giuseppe Russo Patented Nov. 23, 1948 OFFICE LIPS'ICK norman- Giuseppe Russo, New York, N. Y. Applicetion June 6, 1945, Serial No. 597,881 2 Claims. (m. 206-46) This is an invention of a; lipstick applicator and 01 a. package therefor and of a. method of packaging said appiicator.
The principe! object of the invention is the provision of a handy disposabie lipstick applicator carrying,sufficient lipstick for a, single .pplication and having the means for sharply outlining the areas to which the lipstick is applied. The lipstick applicator herein described and claimed may be used in place of a lipstick brush for all the purposes for which such brush is normally used. Since the claimed lipstick applicator is intended to be used for a single applictiononly, its hygienic advantages over a lipstick brush are obvious.
Another object is the provision of a method of making the lipstick applicator and packaging it in the handy package herein described.
A further object is the provision of a. handy package for a piuraiity of lipstick applicators adapted to preserve the lipstick in fresh, usable condition for an indefinite period of time.
These and other objects are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a closed package in accordance with the present invention showing the lipstick applicators herein claimed inserted therein Fig. 2 is a. view similar to that of Fig. 1 showing the package open;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
point. It is this rouncled point that is used to define or outline the area to which the lipstick is applied. It is sufiiciently pointed for this purpose but at the same time sufliciently rounded to permit of gentle application to sensitive skin areas.
Applicator 20 is packedin a tubular container which may be made of flbrous or other suitable material. The manner in which this is done and the manner in which the applica.tor is tipped with lipstick compound follows:
Thepointedstick 2| is inserted into thetube 30 8.5 shown in Fig. 6, the pointedend 22 protruding through the bottom of the tube. A coat ofwax 3| is then applied to said pointed end as well as to the area adjacent the pointed end as by dipping, the coated portion being shown in Fig. 7.- The wax tip which covers the tip of thepointed end 22 is now broken away to expose the latter. This is shown in Fig. 8. The lipstick compound now is applied to the exposed tip ofpointed end 22, also as by dipping. The result of this step is shown in Fig. 9.
Now theapplicator 20 is complete and it remains to seal the same into thetubular container 30. li; wii1 be remembered that only the tip of Fig. 4 is a view of the lipstick applicator shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 show the difierent successive steps in applying the lipstick to the applicator and 'sealing the Iatter in a moisture proof container;
Fig. 12 shows in vertical section another type of moisture-proof container;
Fig. 13 shows a lipstick applieator sealed into said container; and
Fig. 14 shows the appiicator before it 'has been sealed into the container.
Thelipstick applicator 20 best shown in Fig. 4
the Wax coat wa;s removed, lea.ving a ring of wax around thestick 2| in the vicinity of thepointed end 22. Thestick 20 is now drawn back through thetube 30 until the lipstick coated end thereof is entirely enclosed by said tube. The ring of wax contacts the inner Wali of the tube and serves to guide the stick therethrough, thereby preventing the tip of lipstick from rubbing against said wall. The wax ring also serves, once the stick is retracted to the position shown in Fig. 10, as a seal between the stick and the tube to prevent air from entering the tube therethrough and drying out the lipstick compound. The tube is itself now dippecl into wax to sea1 oif the lower opening thereof. Asea1 32 of wax is thereby formed in the lower end of said tube as appears in Fig. 11.
The lipstick coated end of the individual applicator is now oompietely encased in an airtight container thereby pr'eserving the lipstick compound for an indefinite period of time.
In the flnished package, a plurality of applicators are carried in a corresponding number of tubular containers in a. fo1der ili. Said folder comprises a single sheet of heavy paper or cardboard or other suitable material, which is bent at its center portion to U-shaped form in cross section, the arms of said U-shaped portion extending up as high as thetubular containers 30 are 'may be described as.
case.
seme height as the arms of the U-shaped portion of thefolder 40. 'I'hese sheet members hold the tubuiar containers together. The unit formed thereby is placed between end afiixed to the arms ci? said U-sh'aped folder portion as is shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and 5.
The folder shown in the dra.wing is intended to be amxed to the tubuiar containers 90 by means ci an adhesive or in any other conventional manner. It is ciear that a folder ci the character described may be made in the form of a, permanent accessory such as a compact or cigarette The use of such permanent -folrier would mean that tubular containers 99 wouid be brought together in the form of a, refi1l to be cerried in said folder and to be discarded in favor of another refill when the first is exhausted.
The device is now ready ior use. The package which is carried in the purse in ciosed condition a5 shown in Fig. 1, is opened to the position shown V in Fig. 2. One of the appiicators is withdrawn from its container, the ring or band of wax surrounding ii; guiding it out of said container to prevent contact of the lipstick ageinst the inner wall of the container. The applicator thus withdrawn is used in the usual manner and then discarded. The foider is again c1osed end returned to the nurse tor future use.
Another method ci preparing and.pa.ckaging the applicator is illustrated in Figs. 12, 13 and 14. The tubuiar container 39 is lined with athin iayer 50 of wax. This is done by dipping or spraying or in any other suitable manner. The lined tube is shown in Fig. 12. Theapplicator 29 is prepared by simpiy applying a tip '23 01 lipstick compound to thepointed end 22 of thestick 2|. The finished produci; is shown in Fig. 14. The .pplicator is now inserted into the wa.x lined tube as shown in Fig. 13 and the lcwer end of the tube is then dipped into wax to provide a.bottoxn sea1 32. The wax lining on the inner wall of the tube contacts thestick 21 and provides the necessary se1 there.
Although the present invention h'as been described in connection with lipstick compound, it
is ciear that any type of cosmetic may be used which is capable of holding its shape.
Iclaim:
1. A cosmetic applicator sealed in an airtight container therefor, said applicator comprising a. stick having a reduced, tapered rounded end, a
pered rounded end, a. tepered rounded tip of cosmetic efixed to the tapered, rounded end 01 the stick, the outer dimensions o! said tip of cosmetic being smaller than the outer dimensions or the wa.x ring, said airtight container comprising c. tube whose inside dimensions are slightly smailer than the outside dimensions of the wax ring but which are larger than the outside dimensions 01 the cosmetic tip, said stick being mounted in said container, the cosmetic tip end. of said stick being inside the container and the opposite end of said stick extending outside thereof, a press flt being provided between the wax ring and the inside wall 01 the container, the apposite end ci! the container adja.cent the cosmetic tip end of the stick being secied ofi with wa.x, the cosmetic tip on suid stick being free from contact with the inner wali of the container.
2. A cosmetic applicator sealed in its own individual eirtight container, said applicator comprising e round stick having a reduced, rounded tapered point tipped with a cosmetic, saioi stick having a. wax ring formed around it cdjs.cent its tapered point, the outer diameter of seid wax ring being greater than the outer diameter of the cosmetic tip, said cosmetic-tipped end of the stick being mounted within its said container, said container comprising a tubular member which is seeled ofiwith wax at one end and which is open a.t the other end to provide ingress or egress for the cosmetic-tipped stick, said wax ring on the stick being suficiently ia.rge to provide a. seal between said stick and the inner wali of saldi tubuier container, said wax ring being also suiflciently lame tu space the cosmetic tip on said stick from the inner wall of the tubular container end to provide a bearing on which said stick ma.y be movadi into a,nd out ofsaid container ami preventing conta.ct from being' made between the cosmetic tip and the inner wa.1i of the container.
