Z-Claims. (Cl. 229-39) carton, defines the bottom thereof. The side This invention relates to improvements in portable cartons, such as are used for carrying articles of merchandise and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a portable carton which may be formed of a single blank of material adapted to be shipped in flat condition and to be readily assembled for use without necessitating the utilization of staples or other extraneous holding means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carton of the character described which is provided with interlocking means for closing the ends of the carton in such manner as to preclude the accidental opening thereof when the carton is 7 subject to jarring impacts.
The carton of the invention is intended espe- .cially for use in carrying women's millinery, and
for that purpose it has been found to be especially advantageous in that it provides against accidental opening of the ends of thecarton when the same is subjected toimpacts from any direction which tend to cause the ends of cartons to open. At the same time, the arrangement of the interlocking members which form the closed ends of the carton is such as to enable the same to be readily manually engaged or disengaged by the user.
- A further object of the invention is to provide a carton of the character described which can be readily manufactured by the use of simple tools and dies from inexpensive flat stock of any desired or convenient material.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described, and exhibited in the accompanying drawings,- forming part hereof, and in which: 7
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a blank embodying my invention in generally flat position, partly folded and partly broken,
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of a carton formed from the blank shown in Fig. 1, in partly assembled position, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end elevational view taken onlines 3--3 of Fig. 2 in the direction of the arrows.
As shown in the drawings, the device of my invention is preferably made from a single blank of suitable material generally designated by the numeral and preferably divided by score lines and cuts, as shown in the drawings, to define panels II and I2, which, in-the assembled carton,
constitute the sides thereof, and a panel I! intermediate said side panels, which, in the assembled panels II and :2 are provided withintegrally de- P nding flap portions l4 and I5 which, in the assembled carton, are adapted to be juxtaposed in overlapping registering relation to define the top of the carton.
The ends of the carton are formed of the portions which depend from both lon itudinal edges of the parts above described, namely, ledge members 2| secured to the bottom panel l3 by score lines and adapted, in the assembly-of. the carton shown in Fig. 2, to be folded at right angles to said bottom portion of the carton, and ledgemembers 22 secured to one of the top flaps l5 and adapted, in the assembly of the carton, to be folded at right angles to said top flap-as shown in Fig. 2. The end wall members. t6 and I! are secured to the side panel II byscore lines 3| and similar end wall members l8 and I9 are secured to the other side panel l2 byscore lines 32. Said end wall members are provided with alignedmarginal notches 33 of preferably V-shape so that when the endwall members are folded in the assembly of the carton, the slotted portions thereof are adapted to have interlatching engagement to register the said end walls in initially latched position. I I This arrangement serves to' prevent displacement'of said end walls in a vertical plane when the carton is in the position shown in the remote interior end viewseen in Fig. 2, but does not provide against th lateral displacement of said end members. To preclude the lateral displacement of said end members, the bottom panel l3 and one of the top flaps l4 are provided witharms 23 and 24 respectively, secured thereto byscore lines 36 and 34 respectively so that the arms are adapted to be folded at right angles to the top flap l4 and to the bottom panel I3 .111 the assem bly of the carton as shown in Fig. 3, for interlatching engagement with the end wall members l6-l9 in a manner presently more fully described. Each of thearms 23 and 24 is provided withaterminal portion 35 bendable at right angles to the said arm, the said terminalportion having tabs 36 at the marginal side edges thereof, andtabs 31 disposed intermediate said .tabs 36 and thearm 24 and adapted when bent to occupy a position at to the position occupied by thetabs 36. Thetabs 31 are formed bymarginal slits 38. Theterminal portion 35 of thearm 24 is secured to the latter at the 'score line 39 and isadapted to be bent at right angles thereto for facility of insertion oftabs 36 and 31 in theportions 40 and 42 of the v slits 4| in end wall member M. It will be understood that the parts correspondingly numbered in the drawings are of the same characteristics.
In assembling the carton from the blank shown in Fig. 1, the side panels ll and I! are folded upwardly in spaced, parallel, relation at thescore lines 44 and 45 connecting the same to the bottom panel [3 and the top flap portions [4 and ii are folded at right angles to the side panels II and I2 along thescore lines 46 and 41 thereof, said top flap portions being adapted to be folded in juxtaposed closely adjacent parallel relation so as to define a substantially unitary top portion, generally designated by the numeral 43, of double thickness, to provide ample support for the bandle elements which are generally designated at 49 and which may be of any desired or convenient form. Theledge members 2| and 22 are folded at right angles to the bottom panel and top flap of the darton and the end wall members Hi-l 9 are folded inwardly toward each other and the marginally notchedportions 33 thereof are interengaged to initially latch said end wall members together. Then thearms 23 and 24 are folded over the end walls, theterminal portions 35 of said arms are bent at thescore lines 39 and thetabs 31 are inserted into theslits 42 of the end wall members and then thetabs 36 are folded and inserted into theslits 40 at right angles to tabs 31. It will be apparent from Fig. 3 that in the construction described thearms 23 and 24 engage the end'wall members l8l9 in such fashion as to effectively prevent accidental displacement thereof regardless of the direction from which an impact or jarring motion may be imparted to the ends of the carton. At the same time it will be apparent that the user may open an end of the carton by simply disengaging thetabs 38 and 31 from theslits 40 and 42 and displacing the marginally notchedportions 33 of the end wall members l6-l9. The top flaps l4 and I may be secured together by any desired or convenient means such as for example by an adhesive or the like.
It will be noted that thetabs 3 and thterminal portions 35 of the arms define shoulder portions so that when the said tabs are interengaged with the slits of the end wall members, as can be seen from Fig. 3, theshouldered portions 50 further serve to lock the parts together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is:
1. In a carton having top and bottom members and end wall members, the latter being provided with slits, an arm secured to one of said first mentioned members, and a terminal portion on said arm, tabs secured to the marginal side edges of said terminal portion and adapted to be bent into engagement with portions of said slits, and tabs alsoin said terminal portion defined by angular marginal slits extending, inwardly from opposite sides of the arm and disposed intermediate the first named tabs and the arm and adapted vto be bent into engagement with additional portions of the slits of the end wall members, to occupy a position substantially at right angles to that of the first mentioned tabs, to reenforce the end of the carton.
2. In a carton having top and bottom members and end wall members, the latter being provided with slits of V outline, an arm secured to one of said first mentioned members and a terminal portion on said arm bendable, with relation to said arm at its point of securement thereto, tabs secured to the marginal side edges of said terminal portion and adapted to be bent into engagement with portions of said slits and tabs also in said terminal portion defined by angular marginal slits extending inwardly from opposite sides of the arm and disposed intermediate the first named tabs and arm and adapted to be bent into engagement with additional portions of the slits of the end wall members, to occupy a position substantially at right angles to that of the first men- 'tioned tabs, to reenforce the end of the carton.
CHARLES A. STOPPER.
