UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
SAMUEL H. JENKINS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUNCH FOR METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,439, dated February 8, 1881,
Application filed May 14, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches for Metal, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a tool for punching metal having certain new and useful improvements on a punch, described in a patent issued to me J anuary 29, 1878, No. 199,715, by having the cutters made in such form that the moment they commence to ream the metal around the punched hole the shearing thereof will be borne equally on both sides of each cutter, and thereby relieve the tool from any tendency to twist; and, furthermore, the form of the above-mentioned cutters is such that they may be produced by milling, and consequently they can be made much cheaper and with less labor than heretofore.
Myinvent-ion consists of the peculiar forma tion of the cutters on a punch, said punch consisting of a central cylinder, A, surrounded by a second cutting-edge, having downward conical projections B B evenly spaced around said cylinder. The said cutters are made in the form of two cones with their apexes equidistant one from the other, so that in the downward movement of the punch they may chase or ream out the punched hole and cut away that part of the metal the fiber of which has been destroyed in spaced around said cylinder, and both edges of" 5 each projection being of corresponding shape, substantially as and for the uses and purposes shown and described.
