Description

Nov. 23, 1943. w. A. BRUNO I RIGHT ANGLE ELECTRIC CONNECTOR Filed Aug. 12, 1942 INVENTOR.
1 him J .7 v E m U m M W shown in Figure l;
Patented Nov. 23, 1943 William A. signor to Bruno, Astoria, Bruno Patents,
Long Island, N. 2., al- Inc., Long Island City,
Application August 12, 1942, Serial No. 454,587
This invention relates to a right angle connector for electrical conductors, and has particular relation to improved means for Joining together electrical conductors which are arranged in directions forming a right angle, and in which one conductor is concentrically located inside of the other.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved connector for properly connecting tubular outer conductor sections forming a right angle, as well as the inner conductors located inside of said outer conductor sections.
Another object of this invention is to facilitate the proper connection of the inner conductors by soldering or the like while said inner conductors are inserted in the connector assembly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a connector of the above mentioned type, which can be easily manufactured, is of simple construction and is safe and durable in use.
Other objects and the advantages of my invention will appear to those skilled in the art from the following specification and claim and the appended drawing which illustrate, by way of example, several embodiments of the invention, and in which l Figure 1 is a sectional view of adapter according to my invention;
Figures 2 and 3 are end views of the device a right angle Figure 4 show an elevation part-sectioned view of'a T-shaped adapter, and
Figure 5 is an end view of the connector shown in Figure 4. v
Referring now to Figure 1, adapter body I consists of a square elbow member having a relatively long first tubular portion ii and ashort second portion 2|. Said first tubular portion is provided with ashoulder 2 and is adapted to receive aninsulator element 3 having a shoulder 4 lying againstshoulder 2.Insulator element 3 has a cylindrical bore provided with ashoulder 5, and is adapted to receive a female contact pin i, fitting into the bore of insulatingpart 3. Contactpin 8 is provided with abore 1 andslots 8, and, as shown in the drawing, has aportion 9 having a slightly tapering surface and bore adapted to receive a male contact pin. The remaining portion In ofcontact pin 8 has a reduced cylindrical shape and is provided with a slot i2, adapted to receive the reduced end portion II of a male contact pin iii, the axis of which forms a substantially right angle with the axis of female contact pin 6. A tubular extension part ll, provided with teeth II, is forced into portion 2i 1 Claim. (Cl. 174-87) of adapter body i in ii are parallel 'or at 90 l. Extension part it is race with a shoulder I8, and is adapted to receive an insulating element i1 fitting into the extension part, and provided with a cylindrical, cen-' tral 'bore adapted to receive male contact pin i3,
pin I! may be a registering recess the reduced end portion ll of which is soldered to female contact pin 6 inslot 12 of the latter. Extension part it also carries a coupling nut I! provided with an inner thread i8, while the outer surface of adapter body I has a thread I and aserrated end portion 20. Adapter body i is further provided with a recess l9. andthe recessed portion of tubular part ii may be punched into is of insulator l. I Tubular part it is provided with acircular orifice 22, through which soldering can be conveniently done and the adapter body may be filled with an insulating material, if desired. Orifice 22 is then closed to the adapter body, f. e. 'by spinning over the adjacent circular edge of the adapter body.
Tubular portion ii is adapted to be coupled with a coupling nut and a male contact pin of the type shown at it and it, while male contact introduced into a suitable connector and coupled with the same by means of coupling nut it.
The connector shown in of a T-shaped tubular part, in which the design oi the short tubular, portion 2i is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1-3. Tubular portion II is provided in its central part with acircular orifice 22, adapted to be closed by a registering cover in the manner described above, and contains a central female conductor which extends throughout portion ii. This conductor is terminated at both ends by substantially equal parts of the design and construction shown in Fig. 1, and is connected at the center of the T- shapcd piece with male contact pin it by soldering.
It will be understood that this invention may be carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth, and the embodiments should Figs. 4 and 5 consists bycover 23 which is fastened be, therefore, considered as illustrative and not axial movement by the shoulder provided in said one of the tubular members, and a recess provided in the outer surface of the first insulator member and receiving a registering projection of said one of the tubular members, the other of said tubular members having attached thereto a tubular extension member carrying a coupling nut and carrying a second insulator member and said electrical contact pin which is disposed at a substantially right angle relative to the female electric contact, said electrical contacts being secured in electrical engagement.
WILLIAM A. BRUNO.
