This invention relates to improvements in kits and is directed particularly to the provision of an improved kit of such articles as a plurality of manicure implements, for example, which usually are of such a character that they may be arranged upon a flat surface and in substantially the same plane with one another.

While the invention will be described with reference to a kit or container for such articles as manicure implements, it will be understood that it may be capable of other uses. That is to say, the construction of the invention is such that it is especially suitable for carrying or containing such articles as a nail file, pair of nail scissors, tweezers and so forth, which articles are commonly so constructed as to permit their being disposed in spaced relation upon a flat surface in such a Way that they do not project too greatly above the plane of said surface.

It is one of the principal objects of the invention to provide a kit of such articles as above-mentioned which is so compact, relatively flat and thin as to permit the same to be carried in a pocket, for example, without showing too much bulk or outward bulge. As will appear, special features of the invention include the provision of a flat and thin receptacle and an article-supporting member which is removably receivable in the receptacle and the whole arrangement is such that the assembled device is fiat and thin.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel kit which includes a protective containing or covering member, an article-supporting part which is removably associated with said member, and cooperating means associated with said member and part whereby the same may be detachably fastened together. As a special feature of the invention, the fastening means may include a part which is so constructed and arranged as to facilitate the removal of the supporting part from the pocket-forming or receptacle member.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of a kit construction which may not only have the utilitarian purposes above noted but which has parts so arranged that the device may be set up on a surface in a more or less easel-like position with a mirror, portrait, or the like in operative or desired location relative to the surface. As will appear, too, the pocketforming or receptacle member may be strength ened or rendered more or less rigid, if desired, at certain points by means which is economically and easily associated therewith.

With the foregoing and various novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Fig. 1 is a plan View of the receptacle or pocket-forming member of the invention;

Fig. 2 is a plan View of the supporting member of the invention showing certain objects or articles removably carried thereby;

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the members assembled in kit-forming relation;

Fig. 4 is an edge elevational View of what is shown in Fig. 3;

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a strengthening member which may be used in association with the receptacle member; and

Fig. 6 is a sectional view to show how the strengthening and receptacle members may be associated.

Referring now to the drawing more in detail, and more particularly to the preferred forms of my invention which have been selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a pocket-forming or receptacle member indicated generally by 2 and while it may be formed in various ways it includes front and rear Walls 4 and 6 joined at marginal edges to form a pocket having an open upper end or side designated by 8. The member 2 is relatively thin and fiat, its walls preferably being formed of some sheet or strip material and being so arranged that the pocket has but little thickness.

According to the form shown, the walls 4 and 6 consist of sheets of some flexible material such as leather and these sheets are more or less similar in size and shape. Where the member 2 is substantially rectangular in shape, as it is in the drawing, the superposed wall parts are secured together adjacent or along three marginal edges thereof as by stitching indicated by [2 or by some other suitable means.

In any event, the walls are relatively movable to permit insertion into the open end of the pocket a relatively fiat and thin supporting member 20. That is to say, the pocket-forming member is sufficiently flexible to readily permit the pocket to be opened up yet it is such that its inherent character of flatness and thinness is retained.

As stated, the kit of the invention is especially adapted for such objects as manicure implements but it will be readily understood that other articles could be contained therein. In any event, it will be obvious from the disclosure that the primary object of the invention is to provide a flat and thin kit which may be easily and conveniently slipped into a pocket and carried about and that it renders accessible and readily removable such articles as it might be desired for one to have on the person without appearing objeotionably bulky.

According to the preferred form of the invention, the carrier 2!] includes abody part 22, which is preferably relatively rigid, and arfiore or less flexible flap ortab 24 hinged to the upper end thereof as shown. A plurality of articles or objects indicated by A are disposed in spaced relation on the flat surface of thecarrier body 22. These objects are shown in the form of manicure implements and may be removably supported thereon by such means as flexible loops orbands 26. I

It will be seen that such an article-carrying support may be readily slipped into the open end of the pocket and thereby protected or covered but, of course, it is des'irablethat the same be as easily removed from the container so that the objects A may be used. Theflap 24 serves this purpose by 'being so arranged that after insertion of the carrier between the walls of the kit, said tab remains outside so as to be accessible for grasping between the fingers.

Part 24 thus has as one of its functions that of a pull-tab, facilitating upward movement of the carrier and out of the pocket. As another function, themember 24 is preferably a part of means for releasably locking the carrier or article-support within the container.

This means may obviously vary widely but according to the form shown consists of cooperating snap-fastener parts 39 and 32 of conventional form associated respectively with the under side of hinged part '24 and the outside of one of the receptacles walls, such as wall 4.

Thus the parts maybe assembled as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and a flat and thin kit provided.

According to the modification in Fig. 6, the pocket-forming member may include a pair of walls 4 and 6" and a reinforcing or forming member such as 6'6 may be disposed therebetween. Here, themember 60 consists of a U- shaped frame-like piece, preferably formed from a unitary strip of metal for the sake of economy, which is inserted in the pocket with the open end of the U and the open end of the pocket in coincidence.

This serves to hold the pocket more or less open, and thereby facilitate insertion of the article-carrying member 20 and, also strengthens the construction. It will be understood, however, that it is desired that the flatness and thinness of the device be retained.

The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.

What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a manicure kit of the class described comprising in combination, a relatively fiat and thin unitary receptacle member consisting of a pair of wall parts of substantially the same size and shape formed from a relatively flexible material and jointed together at their bottom and opposite side marginal edges with their top edges spaced apart so as to provide a flexible pocket having an open upper side, a separate relatively thin and rigid supporting member snugly receivable in said pocket adapted to substantially fill the receptacle and rigidly support the wall parts thereof in receptacle forming relation and provided with a hinged integral flap extending from its upper end, and detachably fastening means associated with the inner side of said flapand the outside of one of 'said wall parts whereby the supporting member may be releasably attached to the receptacle member to 'hold the support in the receptacle.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a manicure kit of the class described comprising in combination, a relatively flat and thin unitary receptacle member consisting of a pair of wall parts of substantially 'the same size andsh'ape formed from relatively flexible material and joined together at their bottom and opposite side marginal edges with their top edges spaced apart so as to provide a flexible pocket having an open upper side, a relatively rigid reinforcing frame member within said receptacle member consisting of a thin strip of sheet metal bent into the form of a U and extending transversely between said wall parts adjacent the bottom and side marginal edges thereof, a separate relatively thin and rigid supporting member snugly receivable in said pocket adapted to substantially fill the receptacle and rigidly support the wall parts thereof in receptacle forming relation and provided with a hinged integral flap extending from its upper end, and detachable fastening means associated with the inner side of said flap and the outside of one of said wall parts whereby the supporting member may be releasably attached to the receptacle member to hold the said support in the receptacle, said supporting member adapted to support a plurality of manicure articles releasably carried by one side of said supporting member.
