SCRAPER ATTACHMENT FOR PUSH BROOMS AND THE LIKE Filed Oct. 14, 1940 ch eshfi. o rcl Patented July 21, 1942 UNETED STATES PATENT GFFIQE SCRAPER ATTACHMENT FOR PUSH BROOMS AND THELIKE 1 Claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel scraper which can be readily attached to various types of push brooms, mops, clusters, and portable vacuum cleaners and which when properly attached can be brought into action by turning the head of the push broom, mop, duster, or vacuum cleaner over to bring the cutting edge of the blade into contact with the floor, whereby gum or dirt can be scraped loose from the floor.
I attain the object of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention applied to a push broom;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the screwthreaded plug engaged in the threaded opening of the push broom which is conventionally applied for permitting a reverse mounting of the head on the handle;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the push broom disposed in inverted position to permit use of the scraper;
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the plug that is inserted in the push broom head;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the scraper plate;
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the drawing, there is illustrated a push broom having the usual head I, handle 3, a screw-threaded handle end which is screwed into a correspondingly threaded recess in the head of the push broom. The push broom has a similar recess on its opposite side whereby the position of the handle relative to the push broom may be reversed.
My invention consists of a screw-threadedplug 4 having knurledhead 5 with a smooth top surface except for atransverse slot 6, to receive a screwdriver for screwing the plug into place in the head of the push broom. Theplug 4 has a threadedcentral channel 8 extending through it and into which the screw I3 may be screwed. The screw l3 has aknurled head 14.
I provide ascraper plate 9 having an e1ongated central slot l0 and projecting points II.Scraper plate 9 is of curved shape, as shown in Fig. 5 and has beveled or sharp operating edge l2, as shown in Fig. 3.
In using my invention, theplug 4 is screwed into the open threaded recess in the push broom head I, either by means of a screwdriver engaging theslot 6 in thehead 5, or by using theplate 9 as a screwdriver. The screw I3 is inserted through slot IU of theplate 9 and is then screwed into the threadedcentral channel 8 ofplug 4 until the underside of the head I4 tightly engages the plate and holds it fast against the top surface I of thehead 5 of theplug 4, as shown in Fig.3.
To use the scraper, the head of the push broom is held in an inverted position, as shown in Fig. 3, inwhich position the scraper may be used to scrape gum or other material adhering to the floor and which cannot be successfully removed by the bristles of the broom itself.
The scraper is fastened to mops and dusters in a similar manner as to ordinary push brooms as first described, or if necessary by drilling a hole in the head or frame of mop or duster and fastening the scraper with a bolt and nut.
To fasten the scraper to portable cleaners, merely drill a hole in the proper place in the nozzle head of cleaner and fasten the scraper with bolt and nut. To use, turn nozzle head into inverted position and scrape gum or dirt from floor.
What I claim is:
In a scraper attachment for push brooms, the combination with a push broom having a transversely curved head and having a pair of spaced threaded openings therein either of which is adapted to receive the threaded end of the handle, a threaded plug adapted to be screw threaded into either of the said openings from the one engaged by the handle, said plug having a central threaded channel, a continuously curved scraper blade having an elongated slot therein, a screw insertible through the elongated slot of the scraper blade and engageable in the threaded channel of the plug, whereby to tightly secure the scraper blade between the outer end of the plug and the inner side of the head of the aforesaid screw.
CHESTER F. HAYFORD.
