SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,598, dated June,8, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAUNGEY BUCKLEY, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will-enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to .letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to that class of boxes or cases for matches and other articles in which a cover is hinged to the body of the case, and in which are provided fastening devices at the end or side opposite to said hinge for holding said cover and body together.

The said invention consists in the peculiar construction of the hinge and other parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings annexed hereto, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a closed 2 5 match-box or match-safe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section taken through the sides of the same when open, and affording a face view of the hinge. Fig. 3 represents a rear perspective view of 3 the box when open. Fig. 4 represents a detail view of the cover and the hinge-plate attached thereto; and Fig. 5 represents a vertical section taken through the sides of the body of the case, the cover being removed, showing the pintle and spring in position and the bead at the front, which serves as a catch.

A designates the body of the box, which is formed with a bead, to, around it near its upper end; and B designates the cover, which is pro- 4 vided at its forward end with a depending lip, b, bent so as to form an inwardly-extending V-shaped catch. The greater part of bead a has no other function than to strengthen the open end of the box; but the front part of said head engages with the V-shaped catch in elastic lip 11 when the cover B is closed. The connection between the said parts a and b is quite firm'enough to prevent accidental opening; but a slight upward pressure on the end of said lip will cause the head a to act against the incline of the V-shaped catch in lip b, so as to force said lip outward and free it from engagement. This is facilitated by the action of spring C, surrounding the pintle D, whereby said cover B is hinged to body A. This spring presses against an attachment to the inside of said cover and tends to throw it open. When the upward movement of the lip I) begins, the said .spring is in combination with the inclined catch in said lip and the rounded 6o bead a in the work of forcing said lip outward, so as to free it from engagement, as stated. After said lip is thus freed the continued action of said spring throws the said cover open.

This attachment or leaf (marked E) is provided at its lower end with knuckles e, which surround pintle D, and is recessed at c, between said knuckles, to leave space for said spring C. The upper end of said leaf is soldered or otherwise suitably attached to the inside of cover B at a point between the center and the rear end of said cover, and the said leaf is bent so as not to engage with the edge of the box when said cover is thrown back. The pintle D is secured to the sides of body A near the rear of the upper end thereof, at a point a little below the rim or edge, and does not extend at either end outward beyond the side of said body. The entire hinge is within the case when the cover B is closed, and both said hinge and spring C are then fully protected by the body and cover of the case. All unsightly appearance of solder is thereby prevented, as well as injury from rust.

\Vhen the cover B is thrown open the rear end, B, of said cover overlaps the rear part of the upper end of body A, and affords a secure protection both to the edge of the said casebody and to the hinge and spring. There is then a double shield of metal behind the spring 0 and hinge.

The cover and leaf E may be made of one piece of metal; but I prefer to make the said leaf in a separate piece and attach it to the cover, as shown.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
