3 Claims.
This invention relates to valve bags, and particularly to valve bags where the inlet opening is securely closed after filling so that there will be no leakage through the valve.
The primary object of theinvention is to provide a bag which can be filled through a substantially restricted valve opening which is provided with an inwardly extending valve extension or projection designed to close the valve and substantially prevent leakage of the bag contents from the bag through the valve opening- Another object of the invention is to provide means for rendering the bag valve substantially leakproof which are applicable to either single wall bags or multi-wall bags, and which may be used in association with bags whose end closure flaps are maintained closed by either pasting, sewing or stapling.
Another object of the invention is to provide means of the character referred to which are disposed entirely within the valve opening.
An understanding of the construction and function of the subject matter of the instant invention will be secured after a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the valve end of a filled pasted paper bag formed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view of a pasted bag with the end closure flaps open and showing the area of the valve flap adapted to receive the adhesive for attaching; the valve extension thereto;
Figure 3 is a view similar to that depicted in Fig. 2 showing the extension attached to the valve; v
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view -of the valve construction shown in Fig. 3, a filling tube being shown in dotted lines;
Figure 5 is a view similar to that depicted in Fig. 3 illustrating a modified form. of valve extension;
Figure 6 is a view similar to that depicted in Fig. 3 illustrating another form of valve extension;
Figure 7 is a side elevation of a bag having the end closure flaps sewed together, parts being broken away and shown in section so as to illustrate the invention as applied to a sewed bag; and
Figure 8 is a perspective and fragmentary view of the valve end of a sewed or stapled paper bag with the end closure flaps open.
Referring particularly to Figures 1 to 4, in-
elusive, of the drawings, the reference numeral l designates a paper bag of single wall construction and having ordinary forms of end flaps folded so as to form the so-called "diamond fold," wherein the angularly shaped opposite ends of the bag end flaps combine with the triangularly shaped outer end of the valve flap to form a diamond shape when the bag is empty and collapsed.
In the formation of the valve construction illustrated in the specific figures of the drawings referred to, the opposite bag walls are spread apart to formend closure flaps 5 and I0 and the opposite edges are folded inwardly to formflaps 3 and 4, theflap 3 of the drawings being designed to serve as a valve flap. Theend closure flap 5 has a triangular portion ll formed from an integral extension of thevalve flap 3, while the end closure flap III has a triangular portion I3 formed from an integral extension of thevalve flap 5 the triangular portions H and I3 being formed in an obvious manner when thevalve flap 3 is formed by folding inwardly.
The outer edge of a rectangularly shaped strip of paper or other suitable material M, which may be cut from a continuous roll of such material, is positioned on the inner edge of thevalve flap 3 and permanently retained in position by adhesive covering the area l5 shown in Fig. 2. As shown in the drawings, the strip l4 projects interiorly of the bag. As shown in Fig. 3, onejend of the strip of paper It forming the valve projection may extend laterally a distance so that it will extend outwardly equal to the full width of one of the end closure flaps, while its opposite end will extend only fractionally of the width of the other end closure flap.
The bag end is closed by folding down theend flap 5 and then folding down the end flap l0 uponflap 5 in the usual manner, adhesive ll being borne by the inner surface of the'flap ID,
as shown in Figure 3, to permanently maintain the meeting surfaces of theflaps 5 and Hi together.
It will be observed that when theend closure flap 5 is folded down to bag end closing position, the end of the valve extension M will be folded down upon the main portion of the paper strip. When the complemental end closure flap I0 is folded down upon theend flap 5 to complete the end closure, the opposite end of the valve extension strip will likewise be folded and be disposed intermediate the twoend flaps 5 and I0. Thus, the strip ll when so folded forms a tubular extension for thevalve flap 3, the extension projecting interiorly of the bag and being entirely confined within the valve opening.
when it is desired to fill the. bag, the end of the feed pipe l8 attached to the filling apparatus is inserted in the valve so that it extends over thevalve flap 3 and is encircled and substan- I9, or other suitable material, whose opposite ends do not extend over theend closure flaps 5 and ID. This flat strip l9, like the extension l4, projects interiorly of the bag, and, because of its flexibility, adapts itself to the function of resisting any movement of the contents outwardly of the bagv through the valve.
The modification depicted in Fig. 6 reveals a valve extension strip whose opposite ends extend partially over the end closure flaps, 5 and i0. Such a construction also serves to efiectively prevent leakage 'of contents through the valve.
Thebag 30 revealed in Figures 7 and 8 has its ends closed by thread stitching rather than by adhesive. The bag is devoidof folded'end flaps and, instead, the opposite side walls are brought into side-by-side, substantially parallel relation and stitched or stapled together for effecting the closure. A longitudinally extendinggusset 32 is formed in each edge of the bag and the inwardly directedvalve flap 33 is formed by expanding or spreading thegusset 32 at one end of the bag blank or tube and folding inwardly the expanded end of the gusset to form avalve flap 33.
Thevalve extension 34 is attached to thevalve flap 33 as described in association with Figure 3 of the drawings except that each of the opposite ends of theextension 34 preferably extend substantially to the end of the bag so that the ends of the valve extension will be engaged and sewed or stapled, as by thestitching 3|. The
function of the valve extension in the sewed or stapled bag is the same as 'in the pasted bag.
While the bag herein shown and described consists of a single wall of single ply paper, it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable to bags of multi-wall construction wherein two, three or more piles of paper are used. I
Moreover, it may be pointed out that the, valve extension may be applied to other types of valves other than those herein specifically referred to.
Although we have illustrated and described preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be apparent that various changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangements of elements described without departing from the invention. Hence, it is not desired to be limited to the precise details set forth, and we shall consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A bag of the character referred to having a valve flap and having oppositely disposed end closure flaps formed from the side walls of the bag, a strip of material attached to said valve flap and projecting interiorly of the bag to form a valve extension, said stripoif material extending entirely across the width of one of the end closure flaps and only partially across the width of the opposite end closure fiap, said strip being folded into sleeve form and the end closure flaps being folded one upon the other and adhere'l together to close the bag end.
2. A bag of the character referred to having a valve flap and having oppositely disposed end closure fiaps formed from the side walls of the bags. strip of material attached to said valve fiap and projecting interiorly of the bag to form a valve extension, said strip of material extending entirely across the width of one of the end closure flaps and extending across the opposite end closure flap a distance less than one-half the width of the latter flap, said strip being folded into sleeve form and the end closure flaps being folded one upon the other and adhered together to close the bag ends.
3. A bag of the character referred to having a valve flap and having oppositely disposed end closure flaps formed from the side walls of the bag, one of which flaps is provided with paste on its inner surface, a strip of material attached to the valve flap and projecting interiorly of the bag to form a valve extension, said strip of material extending entirely across thewidth of the non-pasted end closure flap and partially across the opposite pasted end closure flap, said strip being folded into sleeve form and the end closure flaps being folded one upon the other so as to position the paste between the two end closure flaps.
