MARKING-POT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,117, dated May 4, 1880. Application filed February 26,1880.

To atl whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMANN F. W. LIEB- MANN, ofthe city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Marking and Paint Pots, of which the following is a specification.

Theobject of my invention is to provide for the use of painters, within one shell or case, a receptacle for a supply of paint ready for use, and, in connection therewith, an elevated dish to contain a small supply of paint for immediate use thinly spread thereon, and provided with thin bars lixed thereon with their edges upward, for the use of the painter in both opening the bristles of his brush and removing therefrom any excess of paint, and also a receptacle for the brush itself when not in use.

In order to accomplish the object aforesaid I construct a shell consisting of a plain bottom in oblong form and having a vertical wall extending' up from and around the same, and having a cover attached to the wall alittle below the upper edge of the same. Apartitionwall extends across the bottom and up say three-fourths the distance between the bottom and the cover, cutting oi' about one-third of the interior space. This is to contain the supply ot' paint or varnish, and the residue is the receptacle for the brush when not in use.

To form the dish before mentioned a thin plate or sheet is extended from and on alevel with the upper edge ofthe said cross-partition to the end of the shell, and forms aIluid-tight joint all around. The flat bars before mentioned are arranged and fastened upon it withl their edges upward.

A fuller description of my said improvement will be given with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a perspective of the en- 4o tire utensil, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

E is the pai nt-pot proper D, the chamber for the brush d, the opening into it, and e aprojectingpoint to hold the handle of the brush in proper position. g is the vertical partition; h, the han- 5o dle; a, the opening in the top into the paintpot, and z the extension of the main wall above the cover B. b is the opening in the cover over the plate C.

In the use of the device the painter may tilt up the end containing the paint-supply until a sufficient amount of the paint or varnish shall How upon the plate between and around the bars c, and then he can take up as much or as little with his brush as he may require, 6o and may rub oftl any excess against the bars c by pressing the end of his brush across them; or he may open the brush by pressing it upon and over the .bars lengthwise of them.

WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The marking-pot composed of the shell or body A, cover B, paint-receptacle E, plate C, and brush-chamber D, substantially as described.
