SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,099, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed January 31, 1880.
To all whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. ODELL, of Iowa Falls, Hardin county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Bed- Frames; and I do herebyT declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompany- 1 ing drawings, making a part of this specifica tion, in which- 1o Figure l is a perspective view of a bedframe with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through w x. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through y y.
Y My invention relates to that class of bedframes over which is stretched an elastic coiledwire fabric; and it consists of the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed. I
In the drawings, A represents a flat frame, 2c over which the wire fabric B is stretched and fastened by any convenient means at each end.
Between the frame A and the wire fabric B are placed the cross-bars G, made sufficiently elastic to admit of aspring. Through the end pieces, a a., of the iiat frame A, I pass three or more adjusting-screws, D, nearly equidistant across the frame, and these screws pass slightly into the under side of the cross-bars O, as shown in Fig. 2, the purpose of these screws 3o and crossbars being not only to stretch and tighten the wire or other fabric, but to tighten on any desired longitudinal line. To accomplish this latter object is the purpose of having the cross-bars elastic. that they may be 3 5 sprung at any desired point, and even brought to a bow shape, if necessary, for adjusting the tension of the fabric.
The operation of my invention is as follows: After the fabric has been screwed to the hat frame A the cross-bars and screws are placed 4o in position; then, by simplyT raising the crossbars vertically by means of the adjustingscrews the fabric is readily tightened. This may be done either at the head or foot of bed, or at both ends, as desired.
It is evident from this construction that any desired incline from head to foot may be given to the fabric, or it may be kept on a perfect level.
It is also evident that by the use of a par- 5o ticular screw any portion of the bed may recei ve a greater or less tension and be adjusted to suit the weight of the individual to occupy that portion of the bed.
I am aware that longitudinal screws passing through the head and foot pieces and attached to movable bars to which was secured the wire fabric have been used for stretching the fabric in a horizontal line; but such is not my invention.
Having thus described niyinvention, I claim as new and desire to securev by Letters Patent- The independent bed-bottom frame A and the fabric B, secured at the ends of said frame, in combination with the two elastic cross-bars O, removed from, but arranged parallel to, the ends of the frame A, and provided with the adjusting-screws D, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described. 7o
