UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JOSEPH P. SOHMITZ, OF WINONA, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLAR CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,174, dated December 30, 1879 application filed October 23, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH P. SOHMITZ, of Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have. invented a new and useful lmprovement in Horse-Collar Gaps, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a front elevation of the collar cap. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, taken through the line 00 .12, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to furnish caps for horse-collars so constructed as to receive and keep in place the ends of the collar, and form wide smooth bearing-surfaces for the top of the horses neck.
The invention consists in the combination of the collar-cap, the leather strip, and the straps, as hereinafter more fully described.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the cap, which is made of one or more pieces of leather, folded over and sewed, stitched, or otherwise secured together. The mouths or ends of the caps A are made of such a size as to receive the ends of a collar, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
A strip of leather, B, resembling the cantle of a saddle, may be sewed to the rear edge of the cap A, if desired. To the-ends of the cap A are sewed or riveted short straps (l, which are designed to be buckled into buckles attached to the collar.
With-this construction the cap A will keep the ends of the collar in place, will distribute the weight of the collar through the entire width of the cap, and will have a wide smooth bearing-surface for the top of the horses neck, so that it will not make a horses neck sore. but will allow a neck previously made sore to heal, even when the horse is in constant use.
Another advantage of the device is that it may be stufi'ed with moss or hair before insorting" the ends of the collar, so as to form a wide, soft, smooth pad for the top of the horses neck.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the collar-cap A, the leather strip B, and the straps 1, all constructed and arranged as shown and described.
JOSEPH P. SOHMITZ.
