This invention relates to a protective cover to be used for temporarily encasing a book while it is being read or used, in order to protect the book from becoming soiled or marred.

6. One of'the objects of the invention is to pro vide a protective cover which can be easily applied to or removed from the book and which is constructed so that it will readily fitbooks of different sizes.

A further object of the invention is to provide a protective cover in which the 'portion's that enclose the covers of the book have sufiicient stiffness so that when the device is applied to a paper.

In Figs. 5 to 8 I have shown asimple embodiment of the invention which will first be described.

The protective cover shown in said figures comprises a cover member I having apocket 2 to receive .the outer edge portion of thecover 3 of thebook 4, acover sheet 5 of-flexible material adapted to wrap. around the book cover and a second cover member similar to the cover member I and having apocket 6 adapted to receive 5 the outer edge portion of the other cover 8 of thebook 4. The cover members I and I may be made of any suitable material but will preferably be made of paper having some stiffness and body so that the 10 cover members I and I will be relatively stifi. The two cover members I and 1 are then slipped on to the book covers, the outer edge of each book cover with the edge portion of the cover sheet 40 folded thereabout being entered into thepocket 2 or 6 of the cover member.

-may be of a smaller size sufficient to receive 45 only the outer edge portions of the book covers, as shown in the drawings. In either case, however, the edge portions IT and IQ of thecover sheet 5 which are folded around the outer edges wand .20 of the book covers will be held in this 50 folded position by the cover members I and 1 and the protective cover will thus be securely retained on the book while it is being used.

The device illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 can be used equally well with a book of a given dimension from the top to the bottom regardless of either its thickness or its width, that is, the dimension from the outer edge I8 or 26 of the book cover to the back of the book. Thecover sheet 5 will be of sufiicient length to enclose the covers of a wide thick book and if the device is used on a narrower or thinner book, the only result will be that a greater portion of the edges I! and I9 of the cover sheet will be folded around the edges I8 and 26 of the book covers. Cover members I and I which are of a dimension to fit a narrow book can be used equally well on a wide book. In the case of a wide book, that is a book having a large dimension from the edges I8 and 26 of the book covers to the back of the book, the cover members I and I will cover a smaller portion of thebook cover than in the case of a narrow book, but in either case, these cover members will hold the cover sheet securely in position around the book.

The protective cover can be easily applied to a book'in the manner above described, and it can be just as easily removed from the book by simply withdrawing the cover members I and I from the book covers and then removing thecover sheet 5. g

In order to assist in removing the cover members I and I from the book covers, I have illustrated each cover member as provided with a tape or ribbon 2I, one' end of which tape or ribbon is secured to theouter side 9 of the cover member by adhesive or some other suitable means. When the cover member is applied to the book cover, said tape or ribbon 2I will extend from the outer edge of theouter face 9 of said cover member around the edge of the book cover, as shown at 2'2, and then will extend along between the book cover and the inner side I0 of the cover member, theend 23 of said ribbon or tape being exposed on the inside of the book cover. By grasping this exposedend 23 of the ribbon and applying a pulling force thereto, the cover member I will be forced 01f from the book cover.

Instead of making both cover members separate from the cover sheet, I may permanently attach the cover sheet to one cover member and have the other cover member free to be applied to the book cover, as shown in Figs. 5 to 8. Such an embodiment is shown "in Figs. 1 to 4.

Figs. 1 to4 also show a construction in which the cover members are made extensible in a direction from the topto the bottom of the book, so that the cover member can be used equally well with short books or tall books. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 also, the cover sheet is made extensible in a direction from the top to the bottom of the book.

In Figs. 1 and 2, the two cover members are indicated generally at M and 25, and the cover sheet is shown at 26. Each cover member is made in two sections having a telescopic relation and capable of being extended in a direction from the top to the bottom edge. The two sections of thecover member 24 are indicated at 21 and 28, and the two telescopic sections of thecover member 25 are indicated at 76 and 1|.

Thesection 21 of thecover member 24 is formed with theinner wall 29 and theouter wall 30, said walls being connected together at thebottom 3| of the cover member but disconnected at the top. Theinner section 28 of the cover member comprises the twoside walls 32 and 33 which are connected together at the top, as shown at 34, but are disconnected at thebottion 28 are disconnected along theedge 35 of the cover member, thereby providing the open pocket into which the outer edge of the book cover can be inserted. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1

thecover sheet 26 comprises the twosections 36 and 3! which have an overlapping relation. Thesection 36 of thecover sheet 26 is secured at its lower edge to the outer wall of theouter section 21 and thecover sheet section 31 is secured at its upper edge to theouter wall 33 of theinner section 28 of the cover member. As a result, when the twosections 21 and 28 are extended to be applied to a tall book, thecover sheet sections 36 and 31 will be similarly extended and will thus enclose the back of such tall book. Thecover sections 36 and 37 may be secured to the cover member sections 2'! and 28 in various ways. As herein shown, thecover section 28 is formed from a blank such as shown in Fig. 9 which is folded centrally along theline 56 to form the inner andouter walls 32 and 33 The blank is formed with a.tab 5! at the upper end of theinner wall 32, which tab is folded inwardly as seen in Fig. 1, the exposed face of the tab being coated with adhesive 52. One end of thecover sheet section 31 overlies the inner face of theouter wall 33 of thecover section 28 and is secured to said wall near its upper edge bystaples 53, adhesive, or any other suitable fastening means. After the cover sheet section has thus been secured to thewall 33, the twowalls 32, 33 0 folded together along the line offold 54,and which form the inner and outer walls of thecover section 21. Theinner wall 29 has an infolded tab at one edge and theouter wall 39 has a similarinfolded tab 56 at its free edge. Thewall 29 also has an upturnedtab 39 at its lower edge which overlies the outer face of thecover sheet section 36 at its lower edge and is secured thereto in some suitable way as by means ofstaples 58. The outer face of thetab 39 is shown as having a coating of adhesive 59 by which said tab is secured to the inner face of theouter wall 30, as shown in Fig. 4, when the two walls are folded together to complete thecover section 27. The lower corner 66 of thetab 56 may be folded around the end of thetab 39 and tucked between said tab and thecover sheet section 36.

The twocover sections 21 and 28 with their attachedcover sheet sections 36 and 3'! are assembled by sliding the free edge 6I of thewall 32 of thecover section 28 between thewall 29 of thecover section 21 and itsinfolded tab 55 and at the same time sliding thefree edge 62 of saidcover section 28 between thewall 36 of saidcover section 27 and itstab 56, saidtabs 55 and. 53 constituting guides for saidedges 6i and 62. In thus assembling the cover sections the sheet to adjustably secure the bookmark to the cover As herein shown, the cover sheethas asection 31 maybe placed either on the outside or on the .insideof thesheet section 35.

Where the cover members are made in-extensible sections, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, I prefer to provide means for connecting the sections so as to prevent them from being entirely separated, and such means may conveniently be in the form of an elastic band or ribbon which will yieldingly hold the cover member sections in their contracted position shown in full lines, l, but which will allow them to be extended. The advantage of this construction is that when the cover members are thus extended to be ap plied to a long book, the elasticity of the elastic members will tend to contract the covermemer sections and thus automatically reduce them to a size to fit the particular book to which they are applied; Such elastic connecting means is shown asanelastic ribbon 44 which is placed between theouter wall 29 of the outercover member section 2? and theouter wall 32 of the innerpovermember section 28. This elastic band or ribbon is shown as adhesively or otherwise secured to theWall 25. of theoutercover member section 21, as shown at :35, and is adhesively or otherwise secured to theouter wall 32 of the innercover member section 28. as shown at 46. This book is in the form of a ribbon 8%, which is attached to the cover sheet near its upper edge so that when the cover is applied toabook, the book mark will be located at the back of the book in position to be placed between the leaves of the book in any desired location. i

I claim:

1. The combination with a book, of a protective cover therefor comprising two cover mem bers, each having a pocket to receive at least the pocket and the other end being exposed beyond the cover member whereby the application. of a pulling strain to the exposed end of the tape will force the cover member ofi from the book cover. 2. The combination with a book having book covers, of a protective cover for said book comprising a cover member having a pocket to receive at least the outer edge portion of one of the book covers, a cover sheet of flexible material permanently secured to said cover member, said cover sheet extending around the. back of the book and having its free end folded over the outer edge of the other book cover and lying against theinner face of said book cover, and

a second cover member separate from and unconnected with the first cover member and having a pocket in which is received the edge portion of the other book cover about which the free end of the cover sheet is folded, said second cover member being-removably applied to the book cover and serving to hold the cover sheet folded about the edge thereof.

3. The combination with a book having book covers, of a protective cover for said book comprising a cover member having a pocket to receive at least the outer edge portion of one of the book covers, a cover sheet of flexible material permanently secured to said cover member, said cover sheet extending around the back of the book the cover sheet folded about the edge thereof, each cover member and the cover sheet being made in sections which can be adjusted relative to each other to accommodate books having different dimensions from the top to the bottom, and

prising a cover member having a pocket to receive 1 at least the outer edge portion of one of the book covers, which cover member is made in two sections having a telescopic relation, elastic means yieldingly connecting said sections, a cover sheet of flexible material made in two sections, one connected to each section of the cover member, said cover sheet extending around the back of the book and having its free end folded over the outer edge of the other book cover, and a second cover member also formed in two sections having a telescopic relation together with elastic means connecting said sections, said second cover member being separate from and unattached to the cover sheet and being removably applied to the other book cover and serving to hold the cover sheet folded about the edge of saidother book cover.

5. The combination with a book having book covers, of a protective cover for said book comprising a cover member having a pocket to receive at least the outer edge portion of one of the book covers, a cover sheet of flexible material permanently secured to said cover member, said cover sheet extending around the back of the book and having its free end folded over the outer edge of the other book cover and lying against the inner face of said book cover, a second cover member separate from and unconnected with the first cover member and having a pocket in which is received the edge portion of the other book cover about which the free end of the cover sheet is folded, said second cover member being removably applied to the bookcover and serving to hold the cover sheet folded about the edge thereof, I

and a book mark adjustably but permanently secured to the cover sheet adjacent its upper edge.
